Tito Ortiz Retirement Fight Set: Griffin vs. Ortiz III At UFC 148

Tito Ortiz (16-10-1) will make what is expected to be his final appearance inside of the octagon on July 7 at UFC 148. His opponent is the familiar Forrest Griffin (18-7), who Ortiz has battled twice already.

Ortiz confirmed the news himself via Twitter on Monday.

The two first collided at UFC 59 in 2006, where Ortiz earned a hotly contested split decision victory. Griffin would claim revenge nearly three years later at UFC 106; ironically, Griffin exited the cage with a split decision that many felt should have been awarded to Ortiz.

A rubber match won?t go a long way in terms of divisional relevance, but it?s a solid chance for Ortiz to exit the sport on a high note. And some have already churned up speculation that Griffin himself could be nearing the end of his career, and that this may be the last time we see the TUF season one winner inside the cage as well, although there?s been no word from Griffin or his camp to indicate there?s any validity to the conjecture.

Ortiz made his promotional debut in 1997 at UFC 13, where he stopped Wes Albritton in just 31 seconds. Ortiz would go on to eventually capture UFC gold at UFC 25 ?Ultimate Japan 3? where he outworked Wanderlei Silva over the course of five rounds. Ortiz would successfully defend the title five times before relinquishing his grasp on the belt in 2003. Victories over the aforementioned Silva, Guy Mezger, the late Evan Tanner, Ken Shamrock, Vitor Belfort, Ryan Bader and Forrest Griffin anchor his rsum.

UFC 148 is headlined by a bantamweight title bout pitting defending champion Dominick Cruz and longtime rival and former WEC champion, Urijah Faber. The action will emanate from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
