UFC On FOX 2 Predictions & Analysis

By MATT MOLGAARD
MMANEWS.COM Staff Writer

There should be little question as to the ultimate motives of the UFC brass when contemplating this weekend?s UFC on FOX 2 card. FOX will be showcasing a triple header, and just about every fight of ranking relevance pits a drastic favorite versus a considerable underdog. There?s no secret that the MMA community is chomping at the bit to see Chael Sonnen rematch champion Anderson Silva, just as there?s little belief Michael Bisping has a snowball?s chance in hell of defeating the rugged Oregonian. Rashad Evans also seems poised to make his leap into top contender slot, as Phil Davis is a dangerous, but relatively green fighter still. Anything can happen, but this card looks tailor made for the fan favorites.

Demian Maia vs. Chris Weidman: While not the headlining bout, this collision has the potential to be the most intriguing fight of the night. The world is already well aware of Demian Maia?s submission prowess; this man is an absolute animal on the mat, and he?ll happily tie your limbs in a knot if you dabble with the grappling too long. His striking is improving on a regular basis, and he seems to be finally finding a true comfort zone inside the octagon. However, he may be forced into some positions that induce serious discomfort come Saturday night.

Chris Weidman is arguably the best prospect at 185 pounds. This man has a wrestling pedigree that stands nearly unrivaled, is improving his striking at an alarming rate, and has the mental fortitude to wade through the trenches with just about anyone. He?s appeared both comfortable and durable in his three successful UFC bouts thus far, and he?s shown marked improvement with each outing. At 27 years old, Chris still has a very high ceiling, just how far this kid climbs remains to be seen, though he?ll get his first official top 10 test this weekend.

There?s a big part of me that believes Weidman?s inexperience proves to be his downfall in this duel, however, I?ve got to extend the benefit of the doubt: Chris hasn?t missed a beat yet. I see Maia coming close to locking up a limb, but the resolve of Weidman will prevail, and he?ll narrowly escape to rally back with plenty of solid ground control and effective ground and pound. Two rounds to one, Chris exits the cage with a decision victory.

Chael Sonnen vs. Michael Bisping: Michael Bisping is a talented enough gentleman (perhaps that?s a stretch) to upset the best of them. That said, his impressive record isn?t decorated by many top 10 victories. He?s fast, crisp with his punches and has excellent footwork. He?s also become quite aggressive over the last few years. That aggressiveness however may play against him here.

Chael Sonnen is an absolute bull with an iron chin. He enters the cage with one goal, ground his opponent, and then attempt to turn their face into a mess of bruised, swollen bloody flesh. He?s actually become quite effective with this attack, though he still looks to be unbelievably susceptible to submissions. Well, fortunately for Sonnen, submission defense won?t be a huge factor in this fight.

Make no mistake about it, Bisping will find himself on his back at some point in this fight (I?m guessing within the first round). He?ll also certainly be looking to snag a sub from the bottom, but he lacks the refined Jiu-Jitsu to make his bids successful. Chael will stifle everything Bisping can throw his way en route to a decisive unanimous decision victory. I?ll be surprised if ?The Count? manages to steal a round, although, were this a five round fight, my overall assessment may look a bit different!

Rashad Evans vs. Phil Davis: The books say Rashad Evans walks away with a relatively easy victory here. While I agree that he will emerge the superior fighter, I don?t see anything about this fight being ?easy?. It may be best to disregard all wrestling credentials here: on paper Davis looks to be the superior wrestler without doubt, however, inn regards to MMA wrestling, Rashad has appeared more effective. The knowledge of one another's wrestling pedigrees may well force a standup fight; these guys are just too evenly matched on the mat to make for many fireworks.

On the feet, Rashad is the faster, more dynamic striker. He?s also got fantastic timing, which he?s used to tag some great opponents like Chuck Liddell and Quinton ?Rampage? Jackson in the past. Davis in contrast is still developing his vertical offense, and that is overtly obvious, as he?s got a long road to travel before his striking is fit to rival Evans?. It?s going to suit Davis best to make this an ugly affair with plenty of clinching, takedown attempts, and powerful punches thrown. He?s got to really mix his game up in order to throw Evans off, and the only way to do that is to keep the former champion guessing at all times.

A strength edge will belong to Davis, who also looks to be a bit more creative in combat, but that will not be enough to slow down the speeding bullet that is Rashad Evans. Davis will attempt to keep Rashad guessing, and it will work for a few rounds, though ultimately the plan will be foiled, as Evans responds to being the physically weaker man by landing a perfectly placed punch to the chin of Phil Davis late in the fight; a barrage of follow up punches to his downed foe will prompt a technical knockout stoppage in favor of ?Suga? Rashad Evans.
