With his win over Brian Bowles at UFC 139 last weekend, he earned yet another title fight, and he'll once again meet Dominick Cruz for the belt sometime in 2012. While some don't believe he should get another title fight so soon considering his record in Championship bouts recently, Cruz isn't one of them, and gave Faber credit for his performance against Bowles this week.
"The way that he beat Bowles, I think it warrants a title fight for him," Cruz said in an interview with MMAFighting.com. "That's fine with me. I've got no problem. It was going to be him or Bowles, I knew that coming into that fight, and I was ready to take on either one of them. He beat somebody in the Top 5 of the division. That's the first time he's been matched up with someone in the Top 5 of the 135-pound division."
"I thought he looked good. He did exactly what he was supposed to do to be the No. 1 contender. He finished Bowles quickly and put a beating on him. I'm excited for the fight to come."
The two each hold a win over the other, with Faber submitting Cruz in 2007 and Cruz earning a decision at UFC 132 this past July. While Faber looked more impressive in the Bowles fight, Cruz believes he's already faced the best version of Faber, and doesn't see this third bout going any differently.
"He beat me fair and square that fight [in 2007] but I don't look at myself anywhere near where I was then," Cruz said. "My last fight with Faber I feel I fought the best Faber there's been so far and I beat him. So I know I'm going to do it again."
"I think there's a lot of reasons he lost that fight. He wasn't able to get in his zone and get comfortable and do what he wanted to do. I was able to keep him out of his rhythm and that's going to be the case in any fight I have with him. He's never going to know what's coming or when it's coming."
Penick's Analysis: Their third bout should be a fantastic Bantamweight Championship fight. Faber's bound and determined to prove he's the better fighter, and Cruz wants to show everyone there's a reason he's the Champion. Faber absolutely earned this fight with how huge that performance was against Bowles, and Cruz knows that Faber is still the big name and can make him more money with the matchup as well. This is going to be a bigger fight than their second meeting this past July, especially if they get the coaching slots on the first Ultimate Fighter on FX.
