According to Sherdog.com, Eddie Alvarez (22-2) may be on the cusp of avenging one of two career losses. The hard hitting Philadelphia Fight Factory representative and Bellator lightweight champion is in talks to take on Dream lightweight champion Shinya Aoki (28-5-0-1) in early 2012 under the Bellator banner. Neither man?s title will be up for grabs.

Bout contracts have already been distributed to both fighters, and both men are expected to sign the dotted line in the direct future.

The two first collided on New Year's Eve 2008: Though a nightmare with his fists, Eddie was never afforded much opportunity to unleash pugilistic fury upon Aoki, as the Japanese star ensnared Alvarez early, locking on a fight ending heel hook in just over 90 seconds.

Since then both men have enjoyed plenty of professional success.

Aoki has racked up a solid 9-2 post-Alvarez record, which includes victories over noteworthy opponents Tatsuya Kawajiri , Marcus Aurelio, Joachim Hansen, Vitor Ribeiro and Rich Clementi. The submission specialist?s two defeats came at the hands of Hayato Sakurai (who blitzed Aoki with devastating strikes in just 27 seconds) and Strikeforce champion, Gil Melendez (who outworked Shinya over the course of 25 minutes).

Alvarez, in contrast hasn?t missed a step since submitting to the ?Tobikan Judan?; the standout striker has pieced together seven consecutive wins, including convincing victories over, Roger Huerta, Pat Curran, Josh Neer and Toby Imada, all of which took place inside the Bellator cage.
