Clear: The ADD Friendly ToDo List

Recently I have fallen in love with a ToDo list.

I hope this won't be too embarrassing for you, but I have taken it out on dates. In fact, I take it everywhere with me. I even sleep with it. Now, now. I realize I can't marry it?yet?but we are truly inseparable.

A good ToDo list gets out of your way and just lets you write things down. Anything that tries to improve too much beyond the pen and paper paradigm becomes a different beast entirely. That's not to say that ToDo apps with recurring ToDos and alarms and Swedish foot massage are bad. I like getting my feet rubbed, but sometimes I find the overhead on those more powerful but complicated apps makes me put off using the app. Any app that ends up encouraging an ADHD person to rely on his memory instead is not one I can recommend.

That being said, I find that simple ToDo list apps are rather boring. Look at Apple's no frills Reminders. It's clean. It's nice. It's dull. Then along came Clear.

The first thing I noticed about Clear was its interface. I was wowed. It was elegant, simple, and functional. All the slick finger gestures you've come to expect from an iPhone app are present. If you watched the video, you can see that tapping, swiping, and pinching are all put to full effect. Swipe right to clear. Swipe right to delete. Pull the list down to create a new item. Pull the list up to clear finished items. Pinch apart to create an item in between two existing ones. Pinch closed to collapse the list and move to a higher menu. Tap on text to edit. Tap and hold to move the task around in the list. None of these gestures are strangers to the regular iPhone user. Once you memorize what each gesture does, you'll be amazed at how easy the app is to use. (Definitely take time to go through their sample list.)

But does it work?

Yes, but simply telling you that Clear is a functional task manager is like trying to prove a Ferrari is a good car by pointing out that it has good tires. Clear stands out not just with the bells and whistles, but from its design concept from the ground up. Here are a few of my favorite features:

Pinch apart to create a task!
  1. As pointed out before, the clean design and UI elements make this app elegant to look at and use. The text is beautiful. The colors are pleasing to the eye. There are no buttons, boxes, or widgets to clutter the screen. Considering the mess most of my ToDo lists become, this is an added benefit.
  2. Clear features sound effects to provide audible confirmation to actions. People who find this annoying can turn it off in the app settings, but others such as myself will enjoy this added reward for productivity. Besides, I just know they'll be adding Star Trek sound effects as an Easter egg one day soon. Then I'll truly be living in the future.
  3. A recent update added Shake to undo quickly corrects accidents. The same update also let folks have tasks longer than 24 characters. I appreciate the clean look that 24 character tasks gave the app, but it was nice to see the devs respond to user requests and add these two features.
  4. One fun aspect of the app is the multiple color themes provided for variety. More on that in a moment.
  5. Each new list begins with an inspiring quote. Each cleared list rewards you with another. I like that extra touch, though I don't often see the reward; my lists never end.
  6. My favorite geeky ToDo list feature is the "Active List Count for Badge" setting. If you are like me, you have half a billion lists, but only one that you are actively using. Yet the app's badge shows a count for ALL TOTAL TASKS. Nothing is more daunting than seeing 547 in read hovering above the "Let's get things done today! W00t!!" app of your choice. Clear gives you the option of only displaying in the badge the number of tasks in your currently selected list. I love, love, love this feature.
One flaw I have discovered in the Clear method is when one wants to move a task from one list to another. There is no way to do that easily. Instead, one must cut & paste from one list to the next. At the end of a busy day with multiple tasks uncleared, this can be a wee bit tiresome. It's not overly complicated, and I have it down pat now, but it is a bit tedious. I'd like to see a two finger hold and move operation implemented that let me move a task from one list to the next. Or tap and hold the task to the top of the list, then wait for the list menu to appear.

Still, there is so much about this app that pleases. Simplicity and interest is a powerful combo for an ADHD mind. Aside from sound effects, Clear has more than the usual variety of color schemes to keep the app feeling new to me ? something that I have found is key to sticking with any task manager system. Such a simple feature, yet not offered in most of the task managers that I have used. At first, I just played with the different themes until I found one I liked, but soon I discovered that I could avoid ADHD boredom by simply picking a new theme every few days. When I discovered that there were secret themes built into the app that one could unlock, I was hooked. The latest update added even more secret themes, some unlocked by using features in the app, and some linked to other apps as a form of promotion.

I will be honest with you. If you are looking for a powerful task manager with priorities, due dates, repeating ToDos, and Swedish massage, Clear is not going to be an app you will enjoy using. However, if you want a ToDo list app that builds on the simple pen & paper version but with intuitive, modern features, then you owe it to yourself to check out Clear.

Since I am currently unemployed, any support you folks can send my way will be very appreciated by my daughters and I. I write without pay here for the love of it and because I know many of you find what I write useful. Please donate, leave comments, or share this blog. Let me know I?m not whistling into the wind. And thanks for all the support you have given me in the past. I appreciate it all.

Bellator adds Paul Daley, Shawn Bunch to its roster

While Bellator takes time off between fight seasons, they are keeping busy by adding fighters to their roster. Strikeforce and UFC veteran Paul Daley and Shawn Bunch, a wrestler with international experience, have both signed with the tournament-based promotion.

Daley's getting a fresh start in Bellator after stops in the UFC, Strikeforce and BAMMA. Though he was impressive in two wins in the UFC, his run there is most remembered for a cheap shot at Josh Koscheck after their fight was over and immediately losing his job afterwards. In Strikeforce, he had wins over Scott Smith and Trevor Prangley but lost to Nick Diaz, Tyron Woodley and Kazuo Misaki.

He will make his Bellator debut on July 20 and will fight in the welterweight tournament.

The Bunch signing is a risk for Bellator because he has never been in an MMA match. The two-time NCAA Division I All-American for Edinboro has been on the U.S. national team for five years and narrowly missed making the U.S. Olympic team earlier in June. He will train at American Kickboxing Academy, a camp that has proven successful at transitioning elite wrestlers to MMA.

MMA Fighting reports he has a multi-fight deal and will debut in Bellator's bantamweight tournament this fall.

What do you think of the Bellator signings? Speak your mind on Facebook or Twitter.

UFC 148: Chael Sonnen discusses loss to Anderson Silva, talk of appeal, and retirement

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

SonnenChael_GG180_32.jpg
In the days following his loss to Anderson Silva at UFC 148, Chael Sonnen hasn't said much. A couple of his trainers have chimed in about the fight, however, with one questioning whether Sonnen will walk away from MMA after the loss, and another publicly demanding a rematch and wanting to appeal the loss due to what he felt was an illegal knee from Silva.

On Tuesday night, following the Fuel TV weigh-in show for UFC on Fuel 4, Sonnen finally spoke up, addressing those issues and commenting on the fight and his future. First up was his take on the ill-advised spinning back fist that led to the semi-controversial knee strike, as well as his thoughts on the knee's legality.

"In fairness, had that landed, we would have talked about what a wonderful spinning punch it was," Sonnen began. "But I didn't, I spun around like a doofus. The knee really hurt, all the shots really hurt. Here's the reality. We don't do instant replay in this sport and we shouldn't."

"It comes down to a judgment call. And wherever the referee says the knee landed officially, that is where the knee landed. That is an excellent official, as they all are. He made his call and I will never complain and look back."

Sonnen made it clear as well that he has no desire to appeal the loss due to the knee, taking a very different stance on the issue than his coach Scott McQuarry.

"The referee's judgment is what stands," Sonnen said. "I trust in that and it works both ways. The referee makes the decision and that is the decision, we live with it. We would never go and appeal. A decision is a decision. Part of competing is you have to know how to lose. It's real easy to win, but you have to know how to lose. You have to man up, swallow it and walk out."

As for whether swallowing the loss and walking out means he'll be walking away from the sport, Sonnen explained that it's not a decision he's ready to make.

"I don't think any athlete should even begin to talk like that or even think like that until you let 30 days go by," Sonnen said. "In anything in life, you don't want to make decision based on emotion. You have very big highs and very big lows in this sport. You don't want to make any drastic decisions."

"I think it's an insult to the fans when guys just say I retired, when they really mean I will see everybody in 18 months because I am coming back. When I get to that point in my career I will make the statement and I'll never look back."

Penick's Analysis: The reaction to the thought of an appeal was considerably negative online, and it wasn't coming from Sonnen himself, so it's good for him that he came out himself and squashed it entirely. His future is still certainly cloudy, especially after such a convincing loss and the fact that he'll probably be several fights away from another chance at a title shot. But it's also smart of him not to make any declarations as to whether he'll continue fighting or not, and he's not wrong about the "retirements" of several fighters who then turn around and return a short time later. For now, the saga of Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen should be at a close.

MMA Top 10 Middleweights: Intrigue Grows at 185 Pounds

by Michael David SmithAnderson Silva defended his title against Vitor Belfort at UFC 126.We haven't updated our rankings of the Top 10 middleweights in mixed martial arts in quite some time because, frankly, Anderson Silva has made it a boring division.

That's not to say Silva is boring: When he's on his game, he's as exciting as any athlete this sport has ever seen. And it's not to say the other fighters in the division are boring: There have been plenty of good middleweight scraps over the last few months.

But ranking the middleweight division can get boring because not much changes: It's always Silva on top, and a familiar cast of characters competing for the right to be Silva's next victim.

But there are some indications that the middleweight division in mixed martial arts might be getting a little more interesting. Yushin Okami is finally scheduled to get the title shot that was promised to him months ago, Chael Sonnen is finally getting close to being cleared for a return, and the addition of Strikeforce middleweights (starting in July with Jason Mayhem Miller and likely including Strikeforce champ Jacare Souza soon) may inject some new blood into the middleweight class.

So now is a good time to update our list of the Top 10 middleweights in mixed martial arts, keeping an eye on what's ahead for Silva and the other top fighters.

Badr Hari Easily Beats Overmatched Gregory Tony

by Michael David Smith

Badr Hari, the bad boy of kickboxing who hadn't fought in a year, finally returned to the ring on Saturday and easily beat an overmatched and uninterested opponent, the French boxer Gregory Tony at an It's Showtime event in France.

Hari won by first-round TKO, knocking Tony down three times without ever really hitting him all that hard. Tony looked like he didn't really want to be in the ring with Hari, and the matchup of Hari and Tony seemed like a generally bad idea: Tony isn't in Hari's class as a kickboxer, and Tony was also fighting just a week after he had two boxing matches on the same day, winning one and losing the other. A fight like this wouldn't get sanctioned by an American state athletic commission.

Gus Johnson Signs With Fox but Stays With Showtime

by Michael David SmithLast week it was revealed that Gus Johnson's contract with CBS had expired, and on Tuesday morning it was reported that Johnson has accepted a job at Fox. But that doesn't mean he's done as the voice of mixed martial arts on Showtime, the sister network of CBS.

Sources told MMAFighting.com that Johnson's contract with CBS was for basketball and football, and that his deal to call fights (both MMA and boxing) for Showtime was a separate contract. That contract is still in effect, and Johnson will call Saturday night's Andre Ward-Arthur Abraham boxing match for Showtime. Although Showtime hasn't yet announced who will broadcast its next MMA show (a June 18 Strikeforce card), Johnson is expected to call that event as well.

Theoretically, it's even possible that Johnson could be back on the CBS airwaves if CBS ever aired another Strikeforce fight: When Johnson called EliteXC and Strikeforce fights on CBS in the past, that was part of his Showtime deal. It's probably a long shot that we'd see Johnson back on CBS, however.
