UFC ON FOX 2 PREVIEW: Penick's breakdown and fight picks for "Evans vs. Davis" headlined event in Chicago

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

UFC_on_Fox_poster_180_8.jpg
The UFC's second event on network television comes on Saturday night when they go live on Fox from the United Center in Chicago, Ill. The three-fight card features two high-level number one contender fights, as well as another solid middleweight bout to round out the broadcast. The two-hour block is the UFC's first Fox event under their new seven-year television deal, and they're banking on something special out of the night's fighters. Here's what's on tap for the millions tuning in to Fox on Saturday night:

Rashad Evans vs. Phil Davis (Light Heavyweight)

Phil Davis attempts to take the leap from undefeated prospect to legitimate title challenger in this fight against former Champ Rashad Evans. The decorated collegiate wrestler has showed a fantastic ground acumen, with good takedowns and some creative submissions as well. Evans hopes to continue off an impressive performance over Tito Ortiz in August, with a shot at hated former teammate Jon Jones on the line.

Davis believes his wrestling to be far superior to that of Evans, while Evans himself has shown little appreciation for Davis' wrestling game and believes he's the better fighter. The big difference in this fight comes in the striking game, however. Evans is the far superior striker, with proven success on the feet in his career. He's been tagged several times by a number of other opponents, but Davis isn't the level of striker of any of them.

If Davis gets Evans on his back, he'll need to be looking for submissions in quick fashion. His hope to win this fight is to get Evans down and stop him there, and the longer the fight goes without that happening, the more he leaves himself open to being stopped himself. He's the least-hit fighter in the UFC, but that's been because he's able to keep his opponents on their backs. That's not going to be the case with Evans, and that could lead to a long night.

Ultimately, this fight simply may be a little too soon for Davis. He's coming in supremely confident in his own abilities, but with a lengthy injury layoff keeping him out for most of 2011, and the considerable leap in competition he's taking, he's not yet as good a fighter overall as Evans. Because of that, I see "Sugar" Rashad staking claim to his fight with Jones.

PREDICTION: Evans via TKO in the third round

Chael Sonnen vs. Michael Bisping (Middleweight)

There is absolutely no secret about what Chael Sonnen will do in this fight. He wants to take Michael Bisping to the ground, punch him in the face a bunch of times, bully him around and try to dominate the position of the fight. Bisping will want to strike with Sonnen and keep himself standing in order to play out his gameplan.

A few factors influence how this fight will play out. If Bisping's takedown defense is solid, or his ground game capable of getting him back to his feet, he'll have an advantage in the striking department and be able to score points there. If his takedown defense isn't on point, Sonnen will dominate and beat him up on the ground. However, if that plays out for a couple of rounds, don't be surprised if a desperate Bisping pulls off a submission off his back in the final frame.

Sonnen's recent performances have him clearly the favorite coming into this fight. And he should be. He's defeated some very talented fighters with some one-sided performances, and he's out to get into another fight with Anderson Silva.

Bisping is completely capable of finding a way to win this fight. He's more dangerous than some want to give him credit for, and he's tough as well. But the more likely scenario will be Sonnen controlling the pace of the fight and doing what he's done to numerous opponents over the last few years.

PREDICTION: Sonnen via decision

Demian Maia vs. Chris Weidman (Middleweight)

Weidman's only had 11 days to prepare for one of the best grapplers in his division. His top game is fantastic, and his ability to pass and set up submission attempts is a lot of fun to watch, but in Maia he's got an immensely dangerous grappler to contend with.

Maia had been preparing for a striker in Bisping, but his ground game is still his best attribute, and he's capable of snatching submission wins from anywhere. Of course, he hasn't done that as much lately, and a young fighter like Weidman is still a very tough out on that front.

If the fight hits the ground, it's going to depend upon who can gain the upper hand early. Weidman, if he can work his top game, could shock people with what he can do against another high-level grappler. Maia, however, if he takes control, can do very well positionally himself and dictate the pace of the fight.

This is a tough fight to call because of the late change and the unknowns involved, and while I think Weidman is wholly capable of pulling off the upset, I have to go with the established fighter in this instance.

PREDICTION: Maia via decision

======Preliminary Card Quick Picks======

* Nik Lentz over Evan Dunham via decision
* Mike Russow over John Olav Einemo via TKO in the second round
* George Roop over Cub Swanson via decision
* Charles Oliveira over Eric Wisely via submission in the first round
* Shane Roller over Michael Johnson via submission in the second round
* Joey Beltran over Lavar Johnson via TKO in the third round
* Chris Camozzi over Dustin Jacoby via decision

Work! Jon Jones does his thing on the runway

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones has found his next opponent. Though the names Dan Henderson and Rashad Evans have been thrown around, he will face off with Derek Zoolander in a walk-off.

While in Brazil to take in UFC 142 last week, Jones walked in the Auslander fashion show. Skip to the 1:25 mark to see him.

He's a little too fast, but he did have the dead-eyed look that models work hard to achieve. But don't leave MMA for modeling, Jon. There's more to life than being really, really, ridiculously good-looking.

Thanks, Cage Potato.

UFC on Fox 3 coming to New Jersey; Jim Miller vs. Nate Diaz booked for event

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

UFC_on_Fox_logo_13.jpg
After a very exciting submission win over Melvin Guillard on the UFC's first event on FX, Jim Miller finds himself in another featured bout on an even more highly featured card. UFC President Dana White announced on Tuesday night that Miller will take on Nick Diaz on the third UFC on Fox card on May 5.

The May 5 date had been previously reported, but the location and venue were unknown. Not any longer, as White also revealed that the event will come to the IZOD Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Miller's first round submission over Guillard bounced him back from a decision loss to Ben Henderson, who himself will challenge for the UFC Lightweight Championship at UFC 144 in Japan next month. Miller has won eight of his last nine fights, and has only ever been defeated by Henderson, Frankie Edgar, and Gray Maynard in his 24-fight career.

Diaz is riding high off a very impressive win over Donald Cerrone at UFC 141, his second straight since returning to the lightweight division. The Ultimate Fighter season five winner is only 5-5 in his last ten fights, but four of those wins have come in his last six bouts.

Penick's Analysis: This isn't going to be the main event more likely than not, but it's a fantastic lightweight bout nonetheless. This booking likely means that Anthony Pettis will earn the next title shot in the division should he defeat Joe Lauzon, with the winner of this bout more than likely being in line after that. After seven wins in a row against lesser names in the lightweight division, Miller has been given a much higher workload in this three fight stretch, and a win over Diaz should get him that elusive title shot.

UFC Hall of Famer Chuck Liddell to appear in Super Bowl ad with Motley Crue, Adriana Lima

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion and UFC Hall of Famer Chuck Liddell hasn't been seen all that often of late, but he'll be exposed to a big audience on Super Bowl Sunday in a new ad for Kia's "Drive the Dream" campaign.

According to Loudwire, Liddell will appear alongside Motley Crue and Adriana Lima in the 60-second spot during the Super Bowl, and they gave a description of what to expect from the clip:

"The dream sequence, set to the tune of Motley Crue?s adrenaline infused ?Kickstart My Heart,? stars hottie Adriana Lima as a statuesque flag girl as the dreaming man speeds around a racetrack driving the new Kia. As he makes his way around the track he receives approving nods from the Motley boys who subsequently burst into flames and start performing on a stage framed by pyro and fireworks, all while surrounded by martial arts guru Chuck Liddell, bull rider Judd Leffew and a larger than life sub sandwich. You know, just the basics that all men dream about."

Rashad Evans says boo all you want, he likes it

This is a nice behind-the-scenes video blog following Rashad Evans. As always Evans drops some awesome lines. He talks about being a heel and that he wouldn't want it any other way (5:35 mark). Watch the end, the delivery is dynamite.

Evans faces Phil Davis in the main event of Saturday's UFC on Fox 2 card in Chicago.

The Three Bipolar Bears

=>PLEASE FORWARD TO FRIENDS, FAMILY AND LOVED ONES <= Hi , How are you doing? I hope you're doing well. You know, I remember how I used to tell my goddaughter the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. I told her about the little girl and how she had found the three bowls of porridge (I told her porridge was like oatmeal)... And how one was too hot... And how one was too cold... And how one was just right! Then I told her about how the girl was tired, so she went to the beds. And how one was too hard... And how one was too soft... And how one was just right! Well, my goddaughter, who was really smart, said: "Why didn't she just go to the ones that were just right in the first place?" She cracked me up! But I thought she actually made a good point, and it made me think of bipolar disorder (doesn't everything? lol) Why do we complicate everything? Why not go to the "just right" in the first place, instead of going to the "too hard" or "too soft" first? Well, here's how I related it to bipolar disorder: You can be too soft on your loved one. This is what I would call enabling, and what I warn about in my courses/systems: SUPPORTING AN ADULT WITH BIPOLAR DISORDER? Visit: http://www.bipolarsupporter.com/report11 SUPPORTING A CHILD/TEEN WITH BIPOLAR DISORDER? Visit: http://www.bipolarparenting.com HAVE BIPOLAR DISORDER? Visit: http://www.survivebipolar.net You can do too much for them in your role as a supporter. You can do things for them that they should be doing for themselves. For example, as a supporter, you can oversee that they take their medications. You can just ask them, say, if they took their medications that day. But to stand over them every time they take their medications to make sure that they take them, or to give them their medications every time they're supposed to take them, that would be crossing the line into enabling them. In other words, making things too "soft" for them. Doing something for them that they should be doing for themselves. They should be becoming more independent, and not leaning on you for everything, while still appreciating you for the supporter that you are to them. Then we've got the "too hard" type of supporter. The one who expects them to do everything by themselves with no help from them. That's going to the other extreme. As a supporter, there are some ways that you can help. Perhaps your loved one isn't up to driving themselves to their doctor's appointments yet. By driving them to their appointments, you are not enabling them, because they are willing to go, but you are being a help to them, because they are unable to drive themselves yet. What if being around crowds is a trigger to their bipolar disorder? If you insist that they accompany you to a large gathering (family, office, friends, etc.), even though they are nervous and don't want to go because it may be a trigger for them, you are being too harsh on them. You want to fall into the "just right" category as a supporter. Not to go to either extreme. Be loving, kind, supportive, and understanding without enabling or having unrealistic expectations of your loved one, either. Where do you stand? Can you see yourself in the "too soft" or "too hard" pictures? Or are you "just right"? If you are at either extreme... You might want to consider making a few changes. What do you think? Jim Miller back on track with choke victory over Melvin Guillard at UFC on FX 1

Fundamentals took out flash Friday night.

Melvin Guillard looked spectacular at times, but after three minutes of wowing the crowd, he was caught in another choke and had to tap to the very steady and tough Jim Miller.

Guillard, a dynamic striker, was lighting up Miller when he made a big mistake. He left his feet to attempt his fourth flying knee of the fight. Miller was waiting and dumped him to the ground where he eventually locked on a rear-naked choke to finish things at the 2:02 mark of the first round in the main event of the UFC on FX 1 card in Nashville.

"It always something I've been able to do and then from there it was just about securing the position," Miller told UFC play-by-play voice Jon Anik. "I'm pretty confident that I am the most dangerous lightweight in the world. I'm willing to make you guys believe that."

The dominant victory puts Miller (21-3, 10-2 UFC) right back in the middle of the UFC lightweight title hunt. A second straight loss Friday and he would've tumbled down the rankings. Miller lost badly his last time out against Ben Henderson. He revealed this week that he was battling some medical issues entering that fight. That's all in the past now.

Guillard's regarded as one of the most explosive fighters in any weight division. He came out on fire.

Just 35 seconds into the fight, Guillard dropped Miller. As Miller scrambled, he got drilled by six more hard punches. Miller clutched and grabbed to avoid more damage. He ate another big knee as the fighters separated. With 2:48 left, Miller absorbed another huge Guillard punch, right down the pipe, but he never wilted. When Guillard tried a fourth flying knee, Miller was ready.

The 28-year-old from New Jersey dumped Guillard on his back and 10 seconds later scored a momentary mount. Guillard did himself in when he flipped to his back in an attempt to free himself. Miller's jiu-jitsu is too nasty to attempt such an elementary escape. Miller jumped on Guillard's back as he tried to stand up and instantly sunk in his hooks. Guillard's suffered seven previous choke losses during his career. He wasn't getting out of this one.

A relieved Miller gave Guillard (29-10-2, 10-6 UFC) much credit following the fight.

"I don't get knocked down often and he knocked me down. He hits hard man. There are a lot of guys, I think in this weight class and the one above, that don't want to fight that kid," said Miller.

Henderson faces Edgar for the UFC lightweight title next month in Japan. Beyond that fight, it's anyone guess who'll get the next shot against the winner. Miller certainly put himself in the conversation.

Dana White confirms Rashad Evans as first choice for Jon Jones' next Title defense, Dan Henderson a backup option

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

JonesJones_180_14.jpg
The succession of challengers to face UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones has been a matter of common sense for the past several weeks, but on Tuesday's edition of "UFC Tonight" on Fuel TV, UFC President Dana White confirmed the beliefs of many.

The three names that have been involved in the mix are Rashad Evans, Phil Davis, and Dan Henderson. Evans and Davis meet this Saturday night in the main event of UFC on Fox 2 in Chicago, while Henderson's awaiting that fight to see what his next move will be after defeating Mauricio "Shogun" Rua in November.

It's been thought that Evans was at the front of the line should he defeat Davis, as he's essentially been the number one contender without getting a title fight due to injuries since May of 2010. White said that's exactly the case.

"If Rashad Evans wins, and if he doesn't get injured, he will fight Jon Jones," White said. "He's the guy who gets the shot. He's been waiting a long time, and he's the one who deserves it."

However, that doesn't mean Davis will take his spot should he upset him on Saturday night, as White also made clear the backup plan if Evans isn't the next one in against Jones.

"Should Rashad get hurt, then Dan Henderson will fight next."

White didn't reveal the timetable for Jones' next fight, but it's been speculated as the headliner for the UFC 145 card in Atlanta in April.

Penick's Analysis: It's not really telling us anything we didn't know, but it gives a clear hierarchy to the top of the light heavyweight division right now. The Evans fight is the bigger fight if they can get it together for April, but Henderson will make for an excellent challenge should Evans either lose or not be ready in time for UFC 145. As for Davis, he's publicly stated he'd be fine being passed over the next shot for Henderson, so if that's what ends up happening, he'll simply take another fight to earn his own shot.

More behind-the-scenes work from Dana White?s latest video blog

UFC president Dana White released another video blog, which looked back at last Friday night's UFC on FX bouts while also looking forward to this Saturday's UFC on Fox 2 bouts. Spend 10 minutes to see Mike Easton giving himself a pep talk before beating Jared Papazian, Pat Barry burst through the curtain to say hello to his victim, Christian Morecraft, and Melvin Guillard try to break down his loss to Jim Miller.

Then, in one those this-is-why-we-love-MMA moments, Guillard walks toward Miller, who is also getting checked out by the doctors postfight. If you didn't know MMA and the relationship between fighters, you might worry that Guillard is headed towards Miller for a touch of revenge. Instead, he hugged his opponent and congratulated him on the win.
