Bipolar Disorder? The Difference Between These Two Things

=>PLEASE FORWARD TO FRIENDS, FAMILY AND LOVED ONES <= Hi , How's it going? Hope you're doing ok. Today I want to talk to you about two words: ACTIVITY and PRODUCTIVITY There is a difference between "activity" and "productivity," especially when it comes to your loved one. Productivity, for the most part, involves having something to show for your "activity." I'll show you what I mean. Scenario #1: Lisa works as an office worker in a major corporation. Her co-workers are very busy, so no one has time no notice what Lisa is doing - they can't tell if she is being productive or not. So Lisa walks around carrying files in her arms for most of the day, looking as if she is busy (just in case anyone happens to be looking). Is Lisa being productive? No, Lisa is showing some activity, but is not actually being productive. Scenario #2: Mary works for a virtual organization in the customer service department; in other words, she works from home. So there is no one looking over her shoulder, no one to see if she is really working or not. However, she spends more time on the phone with the other members of the virtual organization than actually talking to customers. Is Mary productive? No. Talking on the phone is an activity, but it is not really productive. In fact, in this case, it's worse, because it's a distraction to the other members of the organization who can't get their own work done while they're on the phone with Mary. Scenario #3: George has bipolar disorder and when he's depressed, he tends to sleep more often. The answer may seem obvious, but is George productive? No, because although sleep is an activity, it isn't productive, since there is nothing to show for it. In fact, in the case of bipolar disorder, it can be harmful to your loved one. Too little sleep can lead to a bipolar manic episode, and too much sleep can lead to a bipolar depressive episode. Scenario #4: Bill watches quite a bit of TV. His wife accuses him of being lazy, but he argues that at least he is doing something with his time! Is Bill really being productive since he is doing something with his time, as he says? Bill is doing something with his time, as watching TV is an activity. However, it is not a productive activity, as once you are done watching TV, you really have nothing to show for it. So Bill is not really what I would consider productive. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- You want your loved one to be more than the examples in the scenarios I just described. You want them to be productive, since that will help them manage their bipolar disorder better. You want them to be productive, because that will make them feel better about themselves. You want them to be productive, because productivity brings more quality to a person's life (bipolar or not). So how can you help? You can encourage your loved one to start making To-Do Lists, detailing out tasks they want to accomplish. These can be things around the house, outside the house, or errands they can run. The list doesn't have to be long, but just something to make them feel a sense of accomplishment. In my courses/systems below, I talk about To-Do Lists in detail: SUPPORTING AN ADULT WITH BIPOLAR DISORDER? Visit: http://www.bipolarsupporter.com/report11 SUPPORTING A CHILD/TEEN WITH BIPOLAR DISORDER? Visit: http://www.bipolarparenting.com HAVE BIPOLAR DISORDER? Visit: http://www.survivebipolar.net The difference between activity and productivity is having a sense of accomplishment at the end of the day. And that can help your loved one feel better about themselves, increasing their self-esteem. Being productive will keep your loved one from being bored (one of the triggers to a bipolar episode). Being productive will also keep your loved one from getting depressed (which could also lead to a bipolar episode). What do you think? About Me

I am Douglas CooteyI'm Douglas Cootey, and I've been blogging here since 2005. Before that I blogged into a tiny text file called what's_new.html and hosted it on a site so old not even archive.org remembers it very well. I would update that blog via telnet using vi. I also wore corduroy pants with platform shoes at the time. It was very exciting.

I started out blogging about mental health in order to accomplish three goals.

 1. First, I wanted to overcome the stigma. I couldn't talk about my ADHD or Depression without feeling shame. The method I used to overcome this was self-deprecating humor. It worked well. Considering how many times I screw up my life in a day, I had plenty of source material. Still do.

 2. Next, I wanted to reach out to others who shared my issues. After many years of trying to build a community here I discovered something: People with ADHD don't remember to come back. Poor dears. I could, however, count on women married to men with ADHD to visit regularly. They would visit often, vent their spleens, and then after a few months move on. Even my short stint at HealthyPlace.com failed to create that utopian community I dreamed of. However, all is not a failure. My blog has reached thousands of people, many of whom send me emails thanking me for what I have written. The stigma is strong, so they stay in the dark, but their hearts are touched. I have always considered this the greatest success of my blog.

 3. The last goal was to train myself to be a writer. I first worked on posting regularly. Then I worked on posting within a word count limit to train myself to discard my work without fear, focusing only on the best concepts to put forward. Now, I am writing in my novel so much I have a hard time coming back here to write about mental health, and this is a very good thing.

My new blog is at http://douglascootey.com. I will likely touch upon mental health from time to time since I live with the fun specters of ADHD & Depression daily, but the focus will be on progress, not process. I want to move forward; it is time.

Randy Couture reiterates even with a win at UFC 129, he’s doing it his way and retiring

Randy Couture would make Frank Sinatra, and just about every other former fighter proud. The 47-year-old MMA legend wants to go out "his way" and not on terms set by anyone else. Tuesday during the UFC 129 prefight teleconference, he repeated his claim that he's done, following his fight versus Lyoto Machida.

"It's been an ongoing transition for me," Couture told the media. "I kind of want to go out on my own terms and decide when enough is enough. I think that time has come."

Couture said fighting a top contender like Machida at a mega-event in front of 55,000 fans in Toronto is a great way to end things. It'll also be his 30th pro fight in MMA.

"I think it's time to focus on the other things going on in my life after this fight," Couture said. "And I've pushed it pretty far. I don't think anybody is going to push it as far as I have the last 14 years."

Even if he wanted to change his mind, Couture's schedule sounds like it's booked through the fall of 2011. He begins filming a new movie "Hijacked" in late May and then it's back with Sylvester Stallone for the "Expendables II" in September.

Couture has no plans of filing some sort of official retirement papers, but indicated he won't be talked back into the cage after this one.

"I'm sure that they're probably gonna have ideas for other fights. They're gonna try and entice me into coming back and fighting again. And I anticipate all those decisions. I see myself hopefully being with Zuffa and getting involved with them in some other way, shape or form."

Couture said he's healthy now and doesn't want doctors telling him he can't fight any longer.

He sounds interested in becoming part of the UFC's broadcast team down the road. With the number of events UFC/Strikeforce is going to be putting on around the world, that's a great idea. Couture's transition to the booth may not be the best news for some of the current announcers employed by Zuffa and Showtime.

Jason "Mayhem" Miller meets Aaron Simpson in UFC return at UFC 132

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

LogoUFC_150_901.jpg
It didn't take long for the UFC to book Jason "Mayhem" Miller in a fight. Just a day after Miller's signing with the UFC was reported, the organization has announced that he will make his first appearance in the Octagon in over six years at UFC 132 in July.

UFC officials announced on Saturday that Miller will meet Aaron Simpson at the event in a middleweight matchup, Miller's first UFC fight since a loss to Georges St. Pierre at UFC 52 in his only previous UFC appearance.

The host of MTV's "Bully Beatdown," Miller has put together a record of 12-3 with one no contest in 16 fights since the loss to St. Pierre in 2005, with wins over Robbie Lawler, Tim Kennedy and Kazushi Sakuraba in that stretch. He has won two straight fights, but hasn't fought since the Sakuraba win last September.

Simpson is coming off a decision win over Mario Miranda at the end of March at UFC Fight Night 24. The win snapped a two-fight losing streak to Chris Leben and Mark Munoz in 2010.

UFC 132 takes place from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, headlined by the UFC Bantamweight Championship bout between Dominick Cruz and Urijah Faber.

Penick's Analysis: This is a good fight for Miller's first fight back in the UFC. Simpson's a tough opponent, but Miller has a lot of experience against a lot of very high level opponents. Miller will come in as the favorite in this one, but it will be a good fight for both. It may or may not get televised, but considering the troubles he was having securing a fight in Strikeforce before his contract expired the simple fact that he's got a fight set is probably a relief.

Novel Treatment Avenues for Bipolar Depression

The treatment of adults with bipolar depression may begin with an FDA-approved agent such as quetiapine or an olanzapine/fluoxetine combination. The evidence-based approach to bipolar depression includes treatment with lithium, conventional unimodal antidepressants, lamotrigine, or divalproex.

Some Reflections On Successful Marriages

longevity does not mean having a successful marriage. Through my work, I have met with too many couples who remained married despite being deeply unhappy with each other. They remained together out of fear of being alone, strong dependency needs, the fear of financial resources being decimated, worry that the children would be adversely affected and religious prohibition of divorce.

Pat Curran moving back to featherweight, will compete in Bellator "Summer Series" Featherweight Tournament

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Logo_Bellator_150_284.jpg
Bellator season two lightweight tournament winner Pat Curran is making a drop back to the featherweight division, and will compete in a three event "Summer Series" tournament for Bellator beginning in June.

"I've fought at featherweight for most of my career, so I'm really excited to get back to a weight class where I can really do some damage," said Curran. "I had some great results as a lightweight, but I'm really going to make some noise in this summer featherweight tournament."

Curran won the season two tournament with a knockout victory over Mike Ricci and consecutive decision wins over Roger Huerta and Toby Imada. He then took Champ Eddie Alvarez through five rounds in their title fight earlier in the fourth season on MTV2.

The "Summer Series" tournament will take place during Bellator 46, 47 and 48 this summer, beginning on June 25 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Fla.

"Eddie Alvarez was right on target when he talked about Pat's heart, but Pat also has spectacular knockout power and a great all-around mixed martial arts arsenal. Pat Curran will be a beast at 145," said Bellator Chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney.

No opponent has yet been set, but Bellator's announcement of Curran's move stated possible participants in the "Summer Series" tournament could feature Ronnie Mann and Marlon Sandro as well.

Faber starting Cruz smack talk videos early

Urijah Faber is not a fan of the UFC bantamweight champ, Dominick Cruz, so it's helpful that they are fighting on July 2 at UFC 132. Unfortunately, that's more than two months away, so they have to express their animosity in some way, like YouTube videos.

The pair last fought in 2007 at featherweight. Faber won with a first-round submission, but has expressed his dislike for the "not-that-cool" Cruz many times. If it's like this months out from the fight, it's going to be a fun ride to UFC 132.

Lightweight crystal ball: The 2012 rankings

It's the deepest class in the world, so much so that the top of the 155-pound division could be turned on its ear by this time next year. UFC champion Frank Edgar escaped with his title after fighting to a draw against Gray Maynard at UFC 125. Edgar's a great fighter, but people doubt him because of his size and lack of finishing prowess. With challengers coming at him from all directions, will Edgar still be the No. 1 lightweight in the world in Apr. of 2012?

Maynard, Anthony Pettis, Gilbert Melendez and Jim Miller are probably all two wins away from being the undisputed top dog in the division. With a hot 2011, Sean Sherk, Shinya Aoki, Melvin Guillard, Clay Guida, George Sotiropoulos and Evan Dunham could all force their way into the picture as well. Additional wild cards include Ben Henderson and Eddie Alvarez, if he can escape Bellator. Now that's depth.

Melendez certainly did his part last weekend against Tatsuya Kawajiri. He wasn't going to let judges screw up his first fight in front of Zuffa management. The Strikeforce lightweight champ made sure of that by unleashing a fury of elbows, knees and punches at Kawajiri.

Melendez is knocking at the UFC door for a fight against Edgar, Pettis, Maynard and the rest of the elite crew in the bigger fight promotion.

Melendez says his camp might be the best in the world. Looking at his competition with the "Skrap Pack," it's hard to disagree.

"It's discouraging in camp training with Nick [Diaz], Jake [Shields] and Nate [Diaz]," Melendez told HDNet's Inside MMA. "You question yourself, 'am I ready for this fight?' You know, you have these bad days. I'm getting smashed by these guys sometimes. And then you doubt yourself. And then you walk in there and you dominate, and then you realize that's how great your team is. We're evolving and we always constantly raise the bar against each other."

Yahoo!'s lead MMA writer Kevin Iole joined us to debate the future odds on an Edgar-Melendez fight and how he'd matchup against some of the other elite lightweights.

Here's my top 10 in Apr. of 2012:

1. Gilbert Melendez

2. Frank Edgar

3. Eddie Alvarez

4. Jim Miller

5. Anthony Pettis

6. Melvin Guillard

7. Gray Maynard

8. George Sotiropoulos

9. Ben Henderson

10. Evan Dunham

Rashad Evans says Jon Jones is fake, will be the "Milli Vanilli" of MMA in response to Jones interview

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Jon_Jones_180_17.jpeg
Any "friendship" that Rashad Evans and Jon Jones held prior to Jones saying in March that he'd be willing to fight Evans should the UFC want that fight has gone completely out the window, and the lead up to their eventual fight - expected for September or October - is going to get very interesting.

An interview Jones did with ESPN's Josh Gross this week has drawn the ire of Evans once again, who took to Twitter in response to comments made by the UFC Light Heavyweight Champion. Jones commented on their time training together in the interview, and it was a comment meant to garner a response.

"We fought each other in practice," he said. "A finish has been possible several times and it has always been me finishing him. I never did it out of respect that he was the elder of the school. It's against protocol in a way. Some people would do it but I believe in tradition.

"He has a lot to study. I have a lot to study, but I get to study[ing] more in-depth. He gets to study[ing] and gets a headache."

Obviously, Evans didn't take to kindly to the notion that Jones wouldn't finish him in practice out of "respect", especially when said respect didn't apply to the gym's policy of not fighting teammates. In a series of Tweets both aimed at Jones and responding to fans on Twitter, Evans responded:

"[Jones] will [be] mma's version of Milli Vinilli... Wait until the curtain comes down [cause] it will!"

"[I'm] telling [you] that record is about [to] start skipping! 'Girl [you] know, girl [you] know, know,... It's true, true true' (laughs)"

"[Jones] is a swagger jacker"

"He is fake! The fighting is off the hook but as a person he is fake!"

To Jones, whose only response was "#cmonson" - "It's been on!! Get off your own fan bus [cause] nobody is driving! [You] ain't as raw as [you] believe & I'm gonna show ya!"

"I'm just annoyed how he said he could've finished me in practice.. [Are you] kidding me?! (laughs) This dude is nuts!!"

"[Jones] must [be] high! [Cause I] remember him looking at me begging me [to] let him up [cause] he couldn't get back [to] his feet in training."

Finally, to Jones - "[You] ain't forgot what I can do [to you]! Don't believe your hype! [Ask] your coaches! I'm gonna introduce the world [to] the real [you]!"

Is it September yet?

Penick's Analysis: In the same interview with Josh Gross, Jones admitted that he says things on purpose in order to drive controversy and interest. His exact comment was "I'm not afraid to push the envelope. Controversy is good for your career. It gets your Twitter followers up. Some people are going to love it. Some people are going to hate it. I did it on purpose." So I think he knew exactly what his comment was going to get from Rashad. Whether or not he was given trouble by Evans in training doesn't matter right now, because they'll be developing separately over the next six months or so for this fight. It's going to be huge, and there's going to be even more of this type of thing from the two. It's going to keep people interested, it's going to make people take sides, it's going to get two factions of fans heading into this fight and it's all going to be fantastic.
