ROUNDTABLE: Who should Anthony Johnson and Amir Sadollah fight next after UFC Fight Night 24 victories? Hansen, Hobaugh, Hyden, Bacior, Perez, Williams, Pelkey and Penick

LogoUFC_150_859.jpg
Who should be the next opponent for Anthony "Rumble" Johnson and Amir Sadollah following their wins in Seattle?

RICH HANSEN, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

Amir Sadollah looked better than he ever has looked, but it was against DaMarques Johnson. Word on the street is that Brian Ebersole is next for him, and that makes sense to me. Sadollah's not top 25, and would get drawn and quartered against someone like Carlos Condit. As for Rumble, this guy is a contender. I agree with the sentiment that he should fight Thiago Alves or Rick Story next. Who wouldn't want to see Rumble vs. Alves?

ERIC HOBAUGH, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

Both fighters are deserving and ready for tougher competition. Even though Johnson lost to Josh Koscheck in his last fight sixteen months ago, he is ready to compete against higher ranked opponents. If he were healthy the past sixteen months, he would have fought three or four times.

At this point, I like him against Carlos Condit.

Amir Sadollah would match nicely against Mick Swick or Matt Hughes. I also think Sadollah and Johnson could fight each other. That would be a great fight.

FRANK HYDEN, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

Well, I know that Anthony Johnson needed a win, and did what he had to, but I just don't think he showed anything. What did he really prove? I think he's basically in the same position he was in before the fight. Yeah, he beat Dan Hardy with some average wrestling, but that won't work against the top guys in the division. If Johnson couldn't finish Hardy on the ground, how would he be able to beat Josh Koscheck or Georges St. Pierre on the ground?

I'm of the mindset that you should work to be better than you were in your last fight. I just don't think that's the case with Johnson here. I don't think he improved as a fighter. We all know Dan Hardy is weak in his ground game, but Johnson couldn't finish him. He never really even came that close to finishing him. Johnson wanted a safe win, and that's fine, but I don't think that kind of style allows you to grow as a fighter. Being safe doesn't push you to better yourself.

I really like Anthony Johnson, but he didn't show much in that fight. That being said, I'd put him up against Carlos Condit in his next fight. I think Johnson is a really good fighter, and he should be in there against high-level opponents.

As for Sadollah, I love his talking style and the way he fights. He also definitely deserves a step up in competition. I don't know if I'd put him up against Anthony Johnson, but that would be an interesting fight. Whoever Sadollah faces had better be careful, this guy is a dangerous fighter and if he can stay healthy he'll be a fixture in the Welterweight division for the next handful of years.

MIKE BACIOR, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

I feel like "Rumble" vs Condit could be a very exciting fight, and would push the winner into the upper echelon of the division. I think Rumble might try and work the same strategy he did against Hardy, and it would be very interesting to see if Condit could answer.

As for Sadollah, I think Sadollah-Kampmann would be a very technical stand-up battle. It could either push Amir towards the Top 10 or help Kampmann end his two fight slide. I like the matchup.

ANWAR PEREZ, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

For Anthony Johnson, possibly a rematch against Josh Koscheck, or maybe Chris Lytle. Sadollah is a different story. I still think he needs to work on his overall game, and could use some improvement before testing the waters in the top 10. One more fight for either outside of the top 10 would help before diving in head first, and coming out the same way.

ALEX WILLIAMS, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

I might put Anthony Johnson against Jake Ellenberger and would have put Amir Sadollah against Ricardo Almeida had Almeida not retired. But someone on that level works next for Sadollah.

MATT PELKEY, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

Rumble made weight (hooray!) and beat an opponent above him in the division, so he's due for another name brand opponent. It looks like he wants Jon Howard, but Martin Kampmann or Diego Sanchez would also be perfectly appropriate opponents as well. As for Amir, he looked good beating up on a late-notice replacement, but he needs a stiffer test. He'll probably get another mid-level veteran for his next opponent, but fights with Chris Lytle or the loser of the Rory MacDonald-Nate Diaz fight at UFC 129 would be sick.

JAMIE PENICK, MMATORCH EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

Johnson fought an extremely smart fight against Dan Hardy, and now it's time for him to take on another top contender in the division. He's bordering on a top ten placement himself, but in order to really break into contention he needs to get a big win. I like him against the winner of Thiago Alves vs. Rick Story for his next fight, and we'll see just where Johnson's at in the division.

As for Sadollah, he looked fantastic against Johnson, but he's not anywhere close to being in the upper end of the division. There are plenty of fantastic matchups to make in the welterweight division, and Sadollah could play a part in a lot of them. A rematch against Johny Hendricks could be a good chance for him to show how far he's come since their first meeting, which was only his second career fight. A bout with Brian Ebersole that has been tossed out there makes sense as well. Really, anyone the UFC wants to pit him against outside of the top ten but in the top 20-25 would work for him right now.

Brendan Schaub wishes second blow to knocked out Mirko Cro Cop never happened at UFC 128

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

LogoUFC_150_851.jpg
Brendan Schaub's knockout win over Mirko Cro Cop at UFC 128 drew a little criticism due to what many felt was an unnecessary blow delivered after the knockout strike and before referee Herb Dean could step in.

Now that he's had a chance to look back at the fight, Schaub can see where the criticism comes in, and says he wishes Dean could have gotten to him a little sooner.

"In the heat of the moment, and you're fighting a guy like Mirko Cro Cop, when I hit him I saw him go limp and he started to get back up," Schaub said in an interview with MMAWeekly.com. "Now that's not a guy you want to get back up, that guy's a monster. So, I better get another one in. The other thing too, I don't stop until the ref pulls me off. It's one of those things you don't stop until Herb gets in."

"I wish it never happened, I wish Herb had got there faster so it didn't happen. I'm not the guy who looks to hurt a guy when he's down and out like that at all. That is something I wish had never happened."

The win, Schaub's fourth in a row, positions him to move up the ladder once again in the heavyweight division. But still, though he feels justified in fighting until the referee pulled him off, he felt bad about the extra blow delivered to an idol of his in the sport.

"When I saw it in slow motion, I was like 'aww man' cause literally Cro Cop's my favorite," Schaub said.

Link to Original Source Article

Penick's Analysis: The final punch was certainly not necessary, and at that level when a fighter goes down like Cro Cop did with that punch you would hope that the opponent would notice they are out on the way down, but in the heat of the moment sometimes it just isn't the case. Schaub didn't really do anything wrong, as he fought until Dean got to him, but it was definitely an unfortunately unnecessary extra shot after the knockout blow.

Hale Wins by Inverted Triangle, Bellator Light Heavyweights Advance

by Michael David Smith

In 2009, Toby Imada put Bellator Fighting Championships on the map by defeating Jorge Masvidal with an incredible inverted triangle choke submission, a highlight that became a viral video and was widely regarded as the best submission of the year in mixed martial arts.

Now lightning has struck twice for Bellator.

On Saturday night's Bellator card, Richard Hale used the same move -- the inverted triangle -- to choke Nik Fekete into unconsciousness. It was a sensational highlight, and exactly the kind of thing Bellator needs to attract attention on its new television home, MTV2.

Keith Jardine vs. Gegard Mousasi Set for Strikeforce April 9

by Michael David SmithKeith JardineKeith Jardine is returning to the big leagues of mixed martial arts, taking a tough fight on short notice against Gegard Mousasi on the April 9 Strikeforce event.

Jardine, who was once among the UFC's light heavyweight rising stars, was cut by that promotion last year when he lost his fourth straight fight. He then signed with Shark Fights and lost a fifth consecutive fight, and it appeared that his career had been derailed.

But Jardine stayed active and has won two straight fights on small-time MMA shows, and now he's jumping at a major opportunity to fight Mousasi.

The Truth About Fighting Your Friends

Filed under:

If UFC president Dana White has said it once, he's said it a thousand times: MMA is not a team sport.

It's a sport that's all about individual success and failure. It's about two men locked in a violent struggle for money and status, and there's not enough of either to go around.

This, of course, is the inexorable logic of the fight promoter, who stands to profit handsomely if he can convince friends, teammates, and training partners to forego all other loyalties and duke it out in the cage. But then, the promoter doesn't have to actually get in there and knock his best friend unconscious.

As UFC heavyweight Brendan Schaub put it, "This isn't basketball. It's not like Magic [Johnson] and [Larry] Bird playing each other and being all buddy-buddy. Somebody's getting fu**ed up."

Coker interview: Strikeforce boss uncertain about Daley, Fedor and Barnett in the UFC

Scott Coker, the other guy in the UFC's purchase of Strikeforce, sat down for a lengthy interview with HDNet's Bas Rutten. Coker was grilled on many of the hot button issues that last Monday's conference call never hit on.

Rutten asked the Strikeforce CEO if he thinks fans will ever see Josh Barnett, Paul Daley or Fedor Emelianenko in the UFC. Coker said he didn't know (11:35 mark), but added that he hoped all three continued to fight with Strikeforce.

Other interesting points included:

Coker confirmed that the deal between Zuffa and SVSE came together quickly. He only informed Showtime of the sale one day before the news leaked on Mar. 12.

He denied the rumors that Josh Barnett will be removed from the Strikeforce heavyweight Grand Prix and replaced by Shane Carwin.

The Strikeforce boss joked about his first meetings with the UFC brass talking about Zuffa's 25-person marketing and P.R. staff. He brought along his two employees in those positions (4:40 mark).

Coker is excited about the new resources behind Strikeforce and growth possibilities which include a goal of pay-per-view by the end of 2011.

Surprisingly, even with a roster of 150-plus fighters, Coker says "business as usual" also includes signing new fighters in the future (9:00 mark).

Read into it anyway you'd like - Coker was asked if the purchase by UFC was a good or bad day, he answered by it's a reality (9:30 mark).

Showtime got the call the day before the news leaked 11 days ago, but Coker still hasn't had a chance to speak with M-1 promotions, Fedor's management team (13:25 mark).

Hopefully, Coker is involved in the MMA business at the highest level for years to come. He's definitely an asset, who puts the fans first. He did an amazing job turning a regional promotion, which held its first big fight in Apr. of 2009, into something worth buying for an estimated $40 million less than two years later.

About Me

I am Douglas CooteyI'm Douglas Cootey, and I've been blogging here since 2005. Before that I blogged into a tiny text file called what's_new.html and hosted it on a site so old not even archive.org remembers it very well. I would update that blog via telnet using vi. I also wore corduroy pants with platform shoes at the time. It was very exciting.

I started out blogging about mental health in order to accomplish three goals.

  1. First, I wanted to overcome the stigma. I couldn't talk about my ADHD or Depression without feeling shame. The method I used to overcome this was self-deprecating humor. It worked well. Considering how many times I screw up my life in a day, I had plenty of source material. Still do.

  2. Next, I wanted to reach out to others who shared my issues. After many years of trying to build a community here I discovered something: People with ADHD don't remember to come back. Poor dears. I could, however, count on women married to men with ADHD to visit regularly. They would visit often, vent their spleens, and then after a few months move on. Even my short stint at HealthyPlace.com failed to create that utopian community I dreamed of. However, all is not a failure. My blog has reached thousands of people, many of whom send me emails thanking me for what I have written. The stigma is strong, so they stay in the dark, but their hearts are touched. I have always considered this the greatest success of my blog.

  3. The last goal was to train myself to be a writer. I first worked on posting regularly. Then I worked on posting within a word count limit to train myself to discard my work without fear, focusing only on the best concepts to put forward. Now, I am writing in my novel so much I have a hard time coming back here to write about mental health, and this is a very good thing.

My new blog is at http://douglascootey.com. I will likely touch upon mental health from time to time since I live with the fun specters of ADHD & Depression daily, but the focus will be on progress, not process. I want to move forward; it is time.

QUOTABLES: Paul Daley doesn't know why Dana White doesn't like him, winning away from the UFC his redemption

"What we were trying to do is assure we had security away from the Zuffa people prior to the fight. To negotiate before the fight would show a lack of confidence in myself, and I'm very confident I'm going to beat Nick Diaz. Once a champion, I have more power to negotiate...

I don't particularly know why [Dana White] has dislike for me, but it's obvious he does have dislike for me. If no explanation or reason is given for disliking me, I'm generally going to dislike someone in return. If Dana gives me an honest opinion -- aside from hitting Koscheck after the bell -- as to why he genuinely dislikes me, then at least I'd get some explanation. But there's too many incidents in the history of the UFC that prove it's more personal. Many of the UFC fighters have done a lot worse things to bring the company into disrepute, and they're still there. So it must be personal...

The fact that I'm winning away from the UFC is enough redemption for me. I'm winning in front of fans, I'm making decent money. That's enough for me. I have redemption already, from every fight since the UFC. Getting 'Knockout of the Year,' which is something all the real fans in MMA were talking about in 2010, that was enough redemption. That was the icing on the cake for 2010. I think Dana definitely saw that and I guarantee he didn't like for that knockout not to be in the UFC."

-Paul Daley talks to MMAFighting.com about why he contemplated pulling out of the Nick Diaz fight when Zuffa took over Strikeforce and not understanding why Dana White still has a grudge against him.

Penick's Analysis: I think what Daley's forgetting is the way he reacted when White approached him in the cage after the sucker punch. It was his initial attitude when White confronted him after the sucker punch that incensed the UFC President and led to him saying Daley was banned for life from the UFC. But Daley is right that there are many instances of fighters getting back into the UFC's good graces. What he's missing is that hatchets were buried in those previous instances. It's going to take the same thing happening here to move forward. I still think it can happen, and should he beat Diaz I think there's a definite chance he'll end up in the Octagon again, but he also needs to not go out of his way to make things more difficult than they need to be.

Nick Diaz: Fighting a Teammate Is a 'Disgusting' Thought

Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz doesn't even want to think about having to fight one of his Cesar Gracie teammates.

Diaz said on a teleconference Thursday there is "nothing" that would make him consider fighting a training partner.

"I fight with him today, yesterday in training," Diaz said of teammate Jake Shields, who meets Georges St-Pierre for the title next month at UFC 129. "It's already a done deal."

[Commercial Break]

WINNER: Jung via submission (twister) at 4:59 of the second round

POST FIGHT: Jung said he felt he finally made it up to all the fans he let down through his first two fights in Zuffa. That was the first twister submission in UFC history. Jung said he had been watching Eddie Bravo's videos online for a long time and had told his teammates he'd pull that sub off in the UFC.

STAR RATING: (****-) That finish came with a second left, with a submission that had never been seen inside the Octagon before. It didn't have quite the sloppy fireworks the first fight did, but it was a better fight overall. Jung came to fight and pulled off something never seen before in the UFC, what more can you ask for? Just awesome stuff from "The Korean Zombie."

-Joe Rogan interviewed Jake Shields via satellite ahead of his UFC 129 title fight with Georges St. Pierre.

Good start to this fight.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Johnson. Very close round, but Johnson got Amir to his back three times, landed some nice strikes and worked well on the ground. Sadollah scored some points but Johnson did more overall.

ROUND TWO: They came out and exchanged punches and kicks early. Johnson landed a nice left and a knee to the body. Sadollah got him to the cage. STAR RATING: (***+) That was an excellent fight. Johnson did some good work in the first round, but Sadollah drained him with those knees to the body in the second round, and finally just overwhelmed him. When he locked up Johnson's arm and started raining down the forearms Johnson simply couldn't get out of it and was forced to tap.

[Commercial Break]

-GSP is interviewed by Joe Rogan via satellite ahead of UFC 129.

FIGHT THREE: DAN HARDY VS. ANTHONY JOHNSON (WELTERWEIGHT)

ROUND ONE: Johnson takes the center early as Hardy circles. Johnson landed the first strike with a low inside leg kick. He landed one to the outside. Hardy landed a kick. Johnson landed a nice jab. He threw a high kick and it dropped Hardy. He pounced and landed some strikes. Hardy scrambled and Johnson briefly went for a choke. Hardy worked up to his feet and avoided the knees from Johnson. Johnson then took him to the ground with a partial slam. So much for Johnson not wanting to go to the ground. Hardy threw his legs up high in the guard and tried to keep Johnson neutralized. Johnson landed a few hard strikes. Hardy continued to hold onto Johnson, hoping for a stand up. Johnson landed a couple of lefts. Hardy threw up for a triangle but Johnson threw his legs aside and dropped into half guard. Hardy grabbed Johnson's left arm for a kimura. Hardy got the arm free but couldn't torque it and Johnson broke free from the hold. Johnson landed a hammerfist as Hardy got back to guard. Johnson threw some punches to the body. He finished out the round in Hardy's guard.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Johnson. Hardy weathered the storm, now we'll see what Johnson's got left in the tank after his massive weight cut. He looks huge compared to Hardy and controlled him once the fight hit the ground.

ROUND TWO: Johnson came forward early, and didn't look any worse for wear at that point. He shot in and took Hardy down, and clearly this is not what Hardy was looking for in this fight. The crowd booed. Hardy went for an omoplata and Johnson powered out and landed a right. Hardy went for Johnson's arm again. Johnson threw some body punches as Hardy held onto the arm. Hardy couldn't get the arm loose and Johnson got his arm back and landed a number of strikes. Hardy again went after the arm to the boos of the crowd. Johnson passed to half guard. He landed a couple of hard elbows. Johnson's not doing much on top and the crowd is not liking this round.Johnson landed a number of punches in Hardy's guard and the crowd responded. Johnson with some body punches and he tried to appear busy. More boos from the crowd. The ref stood them up with 30 seconds left in the round. Johnson immediately shot in for a single leg. Hardy held it off and went for the kimura but Johnson stayed on the single leg and took him down as the round ended and the crowd is turning on the fight.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Johnson. He didn't do much with top position, but Hardy did even less. He's in big trouble heading into the third as he's well behind right now.

ROUND THREE: Hardy shot in for some reason, Johnson sprawled and put Hardy on his back. That was not smart. Hardy went for a kimura again on Johnson's other arm. Johnson got the arm out. Hardy landed some hammerfists and again went for the kimura. It hasn't worked for him all fight. Johnson continued to drag him down and then he took Hardy's back. Hardy got up to his feet. Johnson landed a few knees to the thighs. Johnson backed off and threw a head kick and a punch and backed off. He shot in and got Hardy's back. He got the hooks in and went for a choke but Hardy rolled through. Johnson kept his hooks in and landed some striked. Hardy's in a lot of trouble here and Johnson landed a few more punches. The crowd booed as Johnson stopped working. Johnson then locked the body triangle on and then moved to an arm triangle and moved to the side. Hardy got free from the position and Johnson moved to a neck crank. Hardy rolled through and almost took Johnson's back but time is quickly running out. Johnson just rode out the round in a modified headlock, landing some strikes to end the fight. Hardy was just dejected on the ground when Johnson got up.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Johnson. Smart gameplan from Johnson. Hardy's ground game is a major weakness right now, and Johnson exploited it to perfection while proving doubters wrong with his gas tank lasting him to the end. The crowd turned on the fight as they expected a stand up brawl, but Johnson fought smart and got the win. I don't know what happens with Hardy now, as his precipitous fall continues in his third straight loss.

WINNER: Johnson via unanimous decision (30-27 x3)

STAR RATING: (**) Johnson turned it up in the second round, but that was far from the most thrilling fight. Johnson did absolutely what he needed to do to get the win, and the weight cut didn't effect him nearly as much as expected. Hardy thought he was coming into a different type of fight, and his lack of a ground game continues to be a major achilles heel. I just don't know what the UFC will do with him now that he's lost three straight.

MAIN EVENT FIGHT FOUR: PHIL DAVIS VS. ANTONIO ROGERIO NOGUEIRA (LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT)

ROUND ONE: Both fighters felt each other out early, looking to find their range in the first minute. Davis landed a couple of kicks early. A head kick attempt went over Nogueira. Davis landed a hard kick up high and followed with a nice punch. Nogueira landed a nice right as Davis got in close. Davis shot in and went for a double leg. Nogueira held it off and Davis landed a series of hard knees on the cage before backing off. Nogueira stalked and missed a big overhand left. Davis threw a high kick and missed but landed another to the body. Davis shot in again and worked hard for a takedown but Nogueira held him off. Davis finally backed off. Davis threw a hard kick but Nogueira blocked it. Davis again shot but Nogueira stuffed it yet again. Nogueira barely missed the overhand left. Davis landed a body kick. Davis with two more kicks but Nogueira landed a counter punch that stumbled Davis briefly. Nogueira came forward again and Davis shot. Davis sent Nogueira to the ground but Nogueira popped back up and held off the shot again. Nogueira landed a straight left as he caught a kick. He landed a hard right and stuffed another takedown. They circled each other as the round ended.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Davis. Nogueira's takedown defense was very impressive in the first round. Davis still scored more with his kicks and knees on the cage, but Nogueira's right in there on this one.

ROUND TWO: Davis went to the high kick again early and it was blocked. Davis grazed Nogueira with the right and avoided the counter. Davis landed a quick comnbo. Nogueira caught a kick and Davis slipped. Davis landed a hard body kick and backed out. Nogueira went back to stalking and landed a couple of punches. Davis shot in and got stuffed. Nogueira went to stalking and caught Davis with a combo. He landed another nice left. Davis is getting discouraged. Nogueira landed a left. Davis landed an inside leg kick. Davis shot for a single leg and finally completed the takedown. Nogueira kicked him off briefly but Davis got right back to him. Davis landed a hard right and dropped into Nogueira's guard. Nogueira did a great job o controlling Davis' wrists. He kicked Davis off and tried to rush to his feet and Davis stayed on him and got on his back. Nogueira got up but Davis dragged him back down and landed some hard strikes to Nogueira from over and under his arms. He continued the assault and added knees to the body and he stole back the round in the last two minutes.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Davis. Nogueira was ahead early, but the finally completed takedown and ground and pound work took it for Davis.

ROUND THREE: Davis circled early. He avoided a couple early strikes and circled some more. He had a knee blocked and then a high kick. He shot for a single leg and got Nogueira down. He passed to half guard and Nogueira grabbed for his wrists. Davis tried to pass and Nogueira scrambled. Davis rushed right back at him and kept him on the ground. Nogueira rolled over to his back again. Davis landed a right. Davis passed to half guard and landed a short forearm. Nogueira kicked him off and got back to his feet. Davis circled and Nogueira stalked. They traded punches and Davis went for the single. Nogueira stuffed it. Davis landed a punch and shot for a single leg, again completing it. He got to half guard. He landed some punches to the body. Nogueira is simply running out of time now. Davis landed a right and got back into Nogueira's guard. Davis was content to keep Nogueira on his back and the crowd got a little restless. Davis postured up and landed a right and ended the fight on keeping Nogueira on his back.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Davis. Neither did a ton, but Davis taking Nogueira down and keeping him there was the most significant factor in the round. Davis should pick up the win, but it wasn't the most impressive fight or performance. Definitely Davis' toughest test to date, and he passed, but he's got plenty of room for improvement as well.

WINNER: Davis via unanimous decision (30-27 x3)

POST FIGHT: Davis said he was battling injuries in the camp leading into the fight, and he knew Nogueira was tough.

STAR RATING: (**) A lot of that fight was simply too evenly matched, and Nogueira's takedown defense stifled a lot of what Davis tried to do early. His stellar ground game then kept Davis in check later in the fight. Davis picked up the win, and moves up the ladder, but he's not going to be challenging for the title anytime soon, so hopefully fans can put that on the back burner a bit and let him continue to progress and come along at his own pace.

HDNet Offers an Honest Assessment of Bobby Lashley

by Michael David Smith

The worst thing a TV announcer can do is lie to the audience. That's true in any sport, but mixed martial arts has a particularly egregious history of announcers hyping up fighters at the expense of the truth: When a promoter wants to make one fighter or another into its next star, there are far too many announcers willing to overstate the fighter's abilities and mislead the viewers into thinking they're watching a better fighter than they are.

So it was refreshing on Friday night to hear the HDNet announcing team of Michael Schiavello and Frank Trigg tell the audience the truth about Bobby Lashley, who was fighting in the main event of a Titan Fighting card: Although the easy thing to do would have been to hype up Lashley as Titan Fighting's biggest star, Schiavello and Trigg instead offered a frank assessment of Lashley and told the audience the truth about who he is: A big, muscular former wrestler whose physique looks impressive but whose MMA skills are limited and whose cardiovascular conditioning is atrocious.

White lukewarm on GSP-Silva, now calling it a ‘fantasy’ fight

Because things change quickly in the world of mixed martial arts, it's never smart to book a fight nine months in advance. The possibility of a Georges St. Pierre-Anderson Silva clash has gone from very likely six weeks ago to Dana White calling it a "fantasy" fight on Saturday.

Around UFC 126, the UFC president sounded pretty certain he'd finally be putting together the superfight between his welterweight and middleweight champions.

After UFC 128, it looks like the fight has been put on the backburner.

"This fight isn't happening," White said. "It's not a fight yet. It's still a big fantasy fight. There are still things that need to happen in the meantime before we sit down and discuss where this fight would be, what weight it would be at, how it would work. It's all just fantasy yet.

"I literally have not talked to Georges St-Pierre or Anderson Silva about this fight."

GSP echoed those sentiments when he spoke with Cagewriter two weeks ago.

"[...] It's a complete re-orientation of my career. People are saying crazy stuff: 'Oh, he just has to gain 30 pounds and take the fight and fight him in three months.' I can't get 30 pounds in three months. It would take a lot more than that, if I want to go up in weight class," said St. Pierre. "Plus, Silva fights at light heavyweight as well. So he walks around at … he's probably 40 pounds heavier than I am. So if I fight this fight, it might be at a catch weight. If it happens."

Now that the UFC has purchased Strikeforce, that's an even bigger if.

The UFC opened discussions with Strikeforce's former owners starting in December, but when White talked about the superfight possibility at UFC 126, he couldn't have known less than six weeks later, he'd have his pick of the Strikeforce welterweight and middleweight divisions.

Strikeforce's 170 class may not be deep, but it does have a guy in Nick Diaz, who should certainly get a shot at GSP, if the champ gets by Jake Shields at UFC 129 in late April.

The common thought is that Silva has cleaned out the middleweight division. That's utter nonsense. He's got plenty of intriguing fights at 185. Chael Sonnen deserves another shot and if Wanderlei Silva, can stay healthy and get some wins under his belt, that's a mega-fight as well. There's also Yushin Okami and what happens if Michael Bisping keeps piling up wins? The Strikeforce roster also has a few intriguing matchups for Silva led by Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza, Tim Kennedy and Dan Henderson.

‘Mr. Wonderful’ vlogs: Phil Davis is NOT Jon Jones

Phil Davis has a chance to explode into the mainstream tomorrow night at Ultimate Fight Night 24 (Spike 10 p.m. ET/PT).

In the days leading up to his fight against veteran Antonio "Rogerio" Nogueira., the "Mr. Wonderful" crew put together a series of vlogs to track his every move.

Because he's African-American with a decorated amateur wrestling background, he's often compared to Jon Jones. Davis and his boys have a running joke about being asked Jones questions in every interview (7:05 mark above)

In vlog 2 (below), Brandon Vera touches on the obvious when it comes to the Jones comparisons. Vera jokes about Davis being a great athlete (7:45 mark). He also says, he loves "Lil' Nog," but the PRIDE veteran could be in trouble versus Davis.

"His biggest strength is his wrestling and his wrist control. There's no way to prepare for it," Vera said (8:30 mark). [...] For sure, I think Phil's gonna win. I feel bad for saying that. I feel bad for Lil' Nog. I love you Lil' Nog, but I just don't think that you're gonna beat Phil Davis. Davis is on fire right now. He's on right now, he's rough."

Davis' training home in San Diego, Alliance Train Center, is closely tied to Nogueira's home, Blackhouse MMA.

[...] "At first when I heard about [Davis facing Nogueira] I was kind of sad because we're all training partners and we're friends. But it's business, trying to make that check. Trying to make that extra money. MMA is a sport. This is our job. This is what we do. People gotta eat, we're in a recession," said Vera.

Check out vlog four where Davis talks about training with former opponent Alexander Gustafsson. The vlog crew also captured scenes from Davis' appearance on Seattle's NBC television affiliate KING-5. Reporter Christie Johnson (@cjohnsonking5) does a nice job mounting Davis and slapping on an armbar (5:05 mark).

UFC 132 shaping up: Faber plans to beat ‘not that cool’ Cruz

Urijah Faber is a great fighter, but let's face it his trash talk stinks. "The California Kid" is trying really hard when it comes to Dominick Cruz but he's too nice to tear into the UFC bantamweight champ.

"People are always asking 'why don't you like him?' there's a bunch of little things, but the bottomline is, I just don't he's that cool," Faber said (1:20 mark).

Faber said Cruz shouldn't be upset by that.

"I'm just being honest dude. That's the way it is," Faber said. "Get the chip off your shoulder. Who cares what I think? You're a UFC world champion, You're a young guy, you're good looking. You got the title for another four months before I swipe it from you, and life is good."

Wait a second. What happened to the trash talk? You're good looking? Come on Urijah.

That's Faber in a nutshell. He's too nice to really smash Cruz, but make no mistake, Faber really dislikes the dude. The banter leading up to the fight should intensify during the early summer.

Faber versus Cruz is the headliner at UFC 132 on July 2nd in Las Vegas. It's lining up as a pretty deep card.

From MMAWeekly's rumor page:

B.J. Penn vs. Jon Fitch
