Tito Ortiz talks about UFC 148, the Hall of Fame and the next chapter

It's going to be an eventful summer for Tito Ortiz, a man who was recognized as one of the most important fighters in the growth of the UFC when the promotion decided to induct him into their Hall of Fame. He will fight Forrest Griffin on July 7 at UFC 148, making it the third time the pair will meet. After that bout, Ortiz plans to retire.

"I've done everything," Ortiz told Cagewriter. "My body has taken the toll. (back injury, acl replacement) My body just can't train, and training is hard on your body, so I wanted to go out on my own terms."

But before retirement, he will fight Griffin. The pair first faced off at UFC 59. It was a close fight won by Ortiz and was considered one of the best fights of 2006. Griffin took the rematch by split decision at UFC 106. Though they've fought each other for six rounds, Ortiz said he still is studying Griffin because it's part of the job.

"Gotta do your homework. I've got to do as much homework as I possibly can. I see mistakes that he does," Ortiz said. "It doesn't matter that it's my last fight. I'm still pushing my hardest."

He was touched by the UFC deciding to make him a Hall-of-Famer.

"It means all the hard work that I did means something. I've worked really hard in this business for 15 years. I've gotten to succeed, to be very successful, at mixed martial arts in the UFC."

Because he has been in the fight game for so long, he has not had as much time to spend with his family as he would like. He has three sons, and is happy the next stage in his life will involve plenty of time with them.

"First thing is being a full-time father. Being with my kids every single day. I'm starting the second chapter of my life, and it's truly about family."

Follow Tito Ortiz on Twitter for more as he prepares for UFC 148.

Strikeforce's Coker: Despite Rousey's dominance, she has hands full against Kaufman

Strikeforce bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey is a headliner again.

Rousey, 25, who has less than seven minutes of pro fighting experience, is already widely regarded as the current face of women's mixed martial arts.

Now, for the second time in 2012, she'll take a main-event spot for Strikeforce, the UFC's sister promotion and most prominent MMA organization that features women's fights.

Jay Hieron Beats Rick Hawn, Wins Bellator Welterweight Tournament

by Michael David SmithaJay Hieron won a very close split decision victory over Rick Hawn Saturday night, taking the Bellator Season 4 welterweight tournament title.

The fight easily could have gone to Hawn, and one judge said it should have, scoring it 29-28 for Hawn. The other two judges scored it 29-28 for Hieron, who credited his training for getting him into the kind of shape he needed to be in to win three fights in Bellator's eight-man welterweight tournament.

"I just train my butt off, man," Hieron said. "No matter what's going on, I'm in the gym sweating."

What happens when UFC 147 opponents share an elevator? (VIDEO)

During fight weeks, the UFC houses all of its fighters and staff at the same hotel. From Tuesday, when the fighters arrive for pay-per-view events, to Sunday, when they leave, there are plenty of opportunities for awkwardness as opponents see each other in hallways, restaurants and elevators.

Does this mean fights are breaking out left and right, or does it give fighters a chance to be pros who can have fun:

Not surprising to see Wanderlei Silva and Rich Franklin show the latter.

AMADI: UFC's low TV numbers in 2012 due to Friday nights, not declining interest in the product

By: Jason Amadi, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Staff10Amadi_130_62.jpg
Following the first season of the Ultimate Fighter in 2005, the UFC saw an incredible period of exponential growth in North America. There were some low pay-per-view buys and some low television ratings along the way, but generally speaking everything from 2005 to 2010 trended upward for the UFC. Especially on pay-per-view, where they were able to set records year after year.

Unfortunately, as a result of injury, illness, new faces, and new champions, the UFC's unprecedented pay-per-view run ended in 2011. Anderson Silva and Georges St-Pierre were able to bring in big numbers at the beginning of the year, and Brock Lesnar and Jon Jones were able to close the year with a bang, but almost everything else tanked.

The more pay-per-views underperformed last year, the more people kicked around the idea that the UFC's popularity had begun to plateau in North America. Looking purely at the numbers, it certainly looked that way. Back when the UFC was on a steady rise, it was easy to forget what a star driven industry mixed martial arts truly was. It was easy to attribute their pay-per-view success to the strength of the UFC brand and not the name value that their top guys had worked the better part of a decade to achieve.

We're halfway through 2012, and it's fairly safe to say that the UFC's pay-per-view business is trending upwards once again. The first five UFC pay-per-view offerings this year featured title fights involving guys who headlined shows in 2011. Each fighter did a superior number this year than they did last year; in four of the five cases, markedly so.

Jose Aldo co-headlined two events last year, but his solo effort in 2012 brought in an estimated 235,000 buys; that's 10,000 more buys than UFC 136 did last October.

Nick Diaz took on B.J. Penn late last year at UFC 137 and headlined his very first UFC pay-per-view. That show did an estimated 280,000 buys. This year, Diaz was able to draw an estimated 400,000 buys at UFC 143 against Carlos Condit, an opponent who also had never headlined a UFC pay-per-view before.

UFC 144 featured a lightweight title fight between Frankie Edgar and Benson Henderson. The two lightweight title fights in 2011 drew two of the worst buyrates of the year. Last year, Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard headlined UFC 125 which drew an estimated 270,000 buys and UFC 136 which drew an estimated 225,000 buys. The Edgar-Henderson title fight from earlier this year did an estimated 375,000 buys.

Jon Jones fought on four UFC pay-per-views last year and headlined three of them in title fights. Jones put up some of the better numbers in 2011 and was able to do his best buyrate to date against Rashad Evans this year. UFC 145: Jones vs. Evans drew an estimated 700,000 pay-per-view buys.

Junior dos Santos headlined his first UFC pay-per-view ever against Shane Carwin last year at UFC 131 and drew an estimated 325,000 buys. This year, dos Santos drew an estimated 560,000 buys against Frank Mir.

Despite the death of the UFC's pay-per-view business evidently having been greatly exaggerated, the idea of the UFC's popularity having plateaued in North America remains pervasive. Some would suggest that the idea remains pervasive because of low television ratings on FX and a poor outing on Fox this past May, but I believe it's simply a result of the MMA community's refusal to adopt new metrics for success.

The UFC is no longer on Spike TV. Looking at a lot of the numbers the UFC is pulling on FX, perhaps they should be, but they aren't. There is no way to spin the fact the UFC has done significantly lower numbers for UFC on FX cards than they were for "UFC Fight Night" cards on Spike TV. There is also no way to spin the fact the Ultimate Fighter, Ultimate Fighter Finale card and UFC Primetime episodes are also well short of where they were just a few months ago on Spike TV.

However, to suggest that this is indicative of a decline in interest of the UFC product isn't really fair or rational. After all, pay-per-view is recovering from where it was last year and UFC pay-per-view prelims on FX are still on par with what the UFC was drawing on Spike.

The fact is, Friday night can be a pretty bad night for television viewership in general, but it's far and away the worst possible night for mixed martial arts programming.

It's really all in the numbers. The TUF 10 finale did an average 2.6 million viewers in Spike TV. The TUF 11 finale averaged 2 million viewers but peaked at 2.4 million. The TUF 12 finale averaged 2 million viewers and peaked at 2.3 million viewers. TUF 13 was the weird Brock Lesnar-Junior dos Santos season that aired on Wednesdays at an earlier timeslot, so the Finale number dipped to a 1.8 million viewer average. However, TUF 14 rebounded and did a 2.5 million average with a muscular 3.4 million viewer peak.

The TUF 15 finale drew a comparatively low one million viewers. The 15th season of the Ultimate Fighter in general was bottom of the barrel as far as the franchise goes. In fact, all of the UFC's Friday night content has been substantially lower than what they were doing last year.

Looking at the numbers, it's not hard to see what's changed. I suppose you form some convoluted theory based around "over saturation," but Occam's razor suggests that Friday nights are simply a terrible night for MMA.

Going forward, when looking at the UFC's numbers we all have to adopt new metrics for success; things are simply radically different than they were a year ago.

The UFC answers to different masters and is constantly expanding into new markets, most notably Brazil. The UFC has put on three cards there in the last year and none of them have been especially successful domestically. However, tens of millions of Brazilians have watched these events on television.

How do you measure success in that situation? If the UFC breaks even or better on the event in terms of pay-per-view and continues to put up big numbers internationally, can we really call that a failure?

Some just want to make definitive statements about the UFC's decline and they'll likely dismiss the Friday night timeslot woes and their international expansion as "excuses" and that's fine; and to an extent they aren't really wrong. However, for the rational, it's important to recognize that the UFC is swimming in much deeper waters this year than ever before. To be honest, they don't seem to be in danger of drowning any time soon.

UFC Champ Georges St-Pierre admits he was burned out before injury, plans to have fun upon return

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

GSP_WK150_20.jpg
UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St-Pierre has been out of action for over 15 months, and though he's getting back to full training after two knee injuries in the last year, he still does not have a firm timetable for his return. However, that's not necessarily a bad thing for the 31-year-old Champion.

For a long time he's been considered one of the greatest in the sport, but in his last several fights the skill gap between he and his opponents has resulted in some less than thrilling fights. These bouts had brought criticisms on St-Pierre for fighting too safe or for becoming a "boring" fighter, and as he continued going through the motions, he says that all was beginning to weigh on him.

"This is the first big injury that's kept me out of the sport for such a long time. I was completely burned out before I got it," he admitted in an interview with UK publication The Sun. "I was over-trained and wasn't having as much fun as I used to before because of all the pressure and all the critics. So the fact that I hurt my knee allowed me to take a break, step back and see what my priorities were and change a lot of things in my life and in my training.

"I'm coming back as a new guy and I've never been as relieved. I'm having fun again. The key to this whole thing is to have fun so that's what I'm going to focus on. When you have fun in what you do best ? that's when you're successful."

While he was tired and burned out, with the criticism weighing heavy on him as well as the pressure to keep himself on top, he insists he wasn't ready to walk away from the sport. Instead, he's excited after the layoff, and is very much looking forward to taking on new challenges in the division.

"I never felt like quitting," he said. "I've trained almost every day since I was seven years old. I never took a break in my life and now that it's happened for the first time I took it as a blessing to come back fresh, better and sharper.

"It's been the most frustrating period of my career but it's allowed a whole lot of new challengers to appear. It's going to be fun because I'm not going to have to fight the same guys all over again ? it's a new challenge and I feel very motivated about that."

First up on that list is Carlos Condit, who defeated Nick Diaz in February to capture the Interim Welterweight Championship. Some other names have emerged in recent months as well, with Martin Kampmann and Johny Hendricks likely locking horns this November to determine the next challenger for the title. Then there's Nick Diaz, who will likely be in the mix when his suspension for marijuana metabolites expires next February. That last fight is one St-Pierre still hopes to get, but he's got other things on his plate first.

"He is the champion and I want to beat the champion ? I want to beat the best guy.

"I'm confident I could beat him. I would also like to fight Nick Diaz ? but I have to fight one guy at a time!"

Ultimately, St-Pierre believes he's coming back strong, and even though he's been on top for so long he feels he hasn't reached his apex just yet.

"I believe my best years are to come," he said. "I want to be the best of the best at the end of my career.

"I aim very high. I love what I do for a living and I don't plan on retiring any time soon."

Penick's Analysis: If St-Pierre having fun upon his return gets him back to the dominating, violent force of nature we had seen from him on his path to the title and back again to recapturing the title a second time that can only be a good thing. I've never been a harsh critic of St-Pierre's dominating style, but considering the way other fighters finished some of the opponents that St-Pierre allowed to survive for five rounds with him, there's something to be said about his overly conservative nature at times. That said, he's still the greatest fighter the 170 lb. division has ever seen, and if he comes back from this knee injury healthy and prepared to be better than ever, that can mean only positive things for fans and the UFC for years ahead.

UFC 148: Chael Sonnen on Anderson Silva - "I'm going to beat him on July 7 because I want it more than he does"

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

SonnenChael_GG180_19.jpg
During Monday's UFC 148 media conference call, Chael Sonnen was relatively quiet, with Anderson Silva finally cracking and making some of the harshest public comments he's ever made regarding an opponent. Sonnen opted not to give much of a response during the call, but he said afterward that he's not buying much into anything about Silva, let alons the comments made on Monday.

"People can't understand why I'm not getting caught up on the hype of Anderson Silva, but he can't take the magazine covers and press stories into the Octagon with him," Sonnen said in comments released by the UFC. "He's just a man with two arms, two legs - and I'm going to beat him on July 7 because I want it more than he does."

Sonnen then went into hard sell mode, making it clear he's got one thing on his mind come UFC 148: The UFC Middleweight Championship.

"I don't need anything in my life - but I have to have that belt," he said. "Everything I've done, everything I've worked for and sacrificed - everything I have in life - I would give it all away to be the UFC Champion for just one night."

Additonally, UFC President Dana White commented on Silva's tirade, a rant the likes of which he's never witnessed from the man he considers the "greatest mixed martial artist ever."

"I've promoted every Anderson Silva fight since he's been in the UFC in 2006, and I've never heard him talk even remotely like this," White commented. "He is usually so respectful and doesn't say anything negative or disrespectful. I've never heard Anderson talk like this once ? and I've never heard Chael be so sincere about how bad he wants to win this fight and what it means to him to be the UFC World Champion."

Penick's Analysis: This may be the biggest fight the UFC promotes this year, and it's getting raised up even further after Silva's comments on Monday. He's been mostly silent in the lead up to this fight, but this came at the perfect time. There isn't much in the way of sporting events this weekend, giving enough time for the comments to gestate and stick with fans heading into the pay-per-view next weekend. The UFC is expecting to hit the one million mark for pay-per-view buys for the event, a mark they haven't hit since 2010, and this will only help. As for Sonnen, he's turned off the over the top Chael P. Sonnen persona, and in the final weeks before the fight he's taking a serious note. This is the fight he desperately wants to win after coming so close in 2010, and it's his last chance to keep himself at the top of the MMA world.

Terry Etim injured, out of UFC on Fox 4 bout with Joe Lauzon

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Terry Etim continues to find himself on the sidelines, as he's suffered another injury that has taken him out of a fight with Joe Lauzon at UFC on Fox 4. Etim had hoped to bounce back from a vicious knockout loss to Edson Barboza in January, but he'll once again be delayed.

Etim's had lengthy layoffs before in his career, with a 19-month layoff hitting him after an April 2010 loss. He'll hope this layoff is considerably shorter.

Lauzon is likely to remain on the card, though no opponent has yet been named for the event. He's also looking to bounce back from a knockout loss, his coming against Anthony Pettis at UFC 144 in February.

by Michael David SmithGus Johnson, the lead mixed martial arts play-by-play man for CBS who has called many of the most-watched fights in the sport's history, is reportedly leaving the network.

Richard Deitsch of Sports Illustrated reports that Johnson, who's best known for calling college football and the NFL, is leaving after failing to come to terms on a new contract with the network. UPDATE: The New York Daily News reports that while Johnson's contract with CBS has expired, it's still possible he could reach a new deal.

It's not clear whether Johnson is also out at Showtime, where he has been both a boxing and MMA play-by-play voice. Johnson will still be part of Saturday night's Manny Pacquiao vs. Shane Mosley pay-per-view broadcast, but it seems unlikely that Johnson would stick around at Showtime, which a division of the CBS Corporation, for long.

Urijah Faber vs. Renan Barao moved to UFC 149 after injury to Jose Aldo

The UFC's game of musical chairs continues, as Jose Aldo's bout with Erik Koch for the main event of UFC 149 has been scrapped because of an injury to Aldo. Urijah Faber's bout with Renan Barao was moved to the main event at 149 from being the co-main event at UFC 148.

This is the second change to Faber's bout this summer. After coaching against bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz on "The Ultimate Fighter," the two were slated to face off at UFC 148 in Las Vegas. Now, it's Faber vs. Barao for the interim belt at UFC 149 in Calgary.

It's also the latest in a string of main event changes to UFC events. This summer, the main event at UFC 146 was supposed to feature Alistair Overeem vs. Junior dos Santos, but Overeem's inability to get a license in Nevada gave Frank Mir a chance. UFC 147 was supposed to be at a soccer stadium in Rio de Janeiro for Chael Sonnen and Anderson Silva's rematch. After the UFC couldn't get a venue, the bout was moved to UFC 148.

The bad luck continued for UFC 147 as main eventer Vitor Belfort was injured and Rich Franklin had to fill in. UFC on Fox 4 was also hit as Brian Stann's shoulder injury forced him out of the main event against Hector Lombard. Maurico "Shogun" Rua, who was free because of an injury to his UFC 149 opponent Thiago Silva, will now fight Brandon Vera in the main event of the UFC's fourth Fox show.

Even for a sport as dangerous as MMA, that's a crazy run of bad luck. Can the UFC do anything to prevent injuries? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Matchmaker, matchmaker: Another fight changed for UFC 149 and lots of bouts for UFC 150

Though the Summer of Injury sounds like a story arc on a daytime soap opera, it's actually what the UFC has experienced as so many fighters have had to pull out from planned bouts. For example:

-- Heavyweight Check Kongo was supposed to fight Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 149 in Calgary, but an injury to Big Nog forced him out of the fight. Kongo will now fight Shawn Jordan, who won his UFC debut with a second-round TKO of Oil Thompson. As of this writing, every fight on the UFC 149 main card has been altered because of injury.

-- Another heavyweight, Luiz Cane, was also smacked upside the head by the injury bug. Rousimar Palhares, who most recently lost to Alan Belcher, will step in to fight Yushin Okami at UFC 150 in Denver.

Some non-injury-related fight booking news:

-- UFC 150 added four fights, including Justin Lawrence vs. Max Holloway, Nik Lentz vs. Eijii Mitsuoka, Dennis Bermudez vs. Tom Hayden and Michael Kuiper vs. Jared Hamman.

-- Jeff Hougland will fight Takeya Mizugaki at UFC 151 in Las Vegas on Sept. 1. The card will be headlined by Jon Jones' title defense against Dan Henderson.

Cain Velasquez does not have a broken hand

In a summer filled with injury after injury to main event fighters, it's pleasant news when a UFC star is not injured.

Word spread on Wednesday from Junior dos Santos' camp that Cain Velasquez had an injured hand. With Velasquez rumored to face JDS at UFC 152 in September, it was appeared to be another UFC main event blown to bits.

However, Velasquez is doing just fine. The former champ's coach, Javier Mendez, confirmed to MMA Fighting that Velasquez's hand is not broken and they are preparing for him to fight on Sept. 22.

Phew. If you're reading this and you're a UFC star, be careful, OK?

Manny Pacquiao Dominates Shane Mosley

by Michael David SmithManny Pacquiao defeated Shane Mosley via a unanimous decision in Las Vegas.Manny Pacquiao showed once again why he's the biggest attraction in boxing, dominating Shane Mosley on Saturday night to win a one-sided unanimous decision in the biggest fight of the year.

Although Mosley came out fighting hard with a good first round, it was all Pacquiao from there on. Pacquiao knocked Mosley down in the third and dominated the fight throughout. Technically Mosley knocked Pacquiao down in the 10th round, but in reality Pacquiao fell when Mosley tripped him, and the referee made a mistake in calling it a knockdown. In reality, Mosley never had Pacquiao in any trouble, at any point in the fight.

All three judges awarded it to Pacquiao by lopsided scores: 119-108, 120-108 and 120-107. According to the pay-per-view broadcast, Pacquiao landed exactly 100 more punches than Mosley did (182 to 82) and threw more than twice as many punches (552 to 260).

UFC 147: Fabricio Werdum aims for bout on JDS vs. Velasquez II card, Title shot with win

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Fabricio_Werdum_180_3.jpg
Fabricio Werdum would really like a second fight with Junior dos Santos. Back in 2008, a then-unknown dos Santos debuted in the UFC with a spectacular uppercut knockout of Werdum, who at the time was considered one of the top heavyweights in the sport. He had been unhappy that he got passed over for a shot at the title by Brock Lesnar, and he came into the dos Santos bout a bit out of shape and unfocused for a serious challenge in the UFC newcomer.

That loss and a contract dispute with the UFC led him to Strikeforce, where he shocked the MMA world with an upset win over Fedor Emelianenko in 2010. Now back in the UFC and on a two-fight winning streak after stopping Mike Russow at Saturday's UFC 147 event, Werdum wants to make a run at the UFC Title. With Junior dos Santos taking on Cain Velasquez a second time at some point this fall, Werdum would like to fight on whatever card they headline. Then, with a win at that event, he'd hope to be the next in line for a title shot.

"I'm not choosing [who to fight next]," Werdum said of that next bout after Saturday's UFC 147 card (transcribed by MMAJunkie.com). "I'll be ready for any one of them. I can beat Overeem, Frank Mir, and I'll do my best to fight for the title. I believe I can beat my next opponent to go for the title."

"This is a different time now. I'm 100 percent professional. Back in that time [when I first fought dos Santos], I wasn't. I'm sure now I would feel more confident than back then. Today, the fight would be totally different ? I would be ready for him."

Penick's Analysis: If Werdum gets a fight this fall on the same card dos Santos and Velasquez meet, a win should probably put him next in line, provided Daniel Cormier hasn't been brought over yet. A three fight winning streak at heavyweight for Werdum should be enough, provided his next opponent is a solid name and a test in the cage. He definitely has an argument to leapfrog Alistair Overeem, despite his loss to Overeem by decision in 2011, but three straight UFC wins and not failing a drug test helps his case. Besides, Overeem should probably have to win one more fight after his positive drug test cost him his 2012 fighting campaign. That would set up the next few Heavyweight Title challengers with Velasquez, Werdum, and then presumably Overeem and Cormier getting in there in 2013 and 2014.

Michael Bisping eying September return, believes he deserves rematch with Chael Sonnen

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

BispingMichael_180_25.jpg
Michael Bisping was set to take on a tough challenge in Tim Boetsch this summer at UFC 149 in Calgary, but a knee injury forced him out of the fight. He had surgery on the knee last week, and in an interview with MMAWeekly.com this week, he gave an update on his recovery.

"It's getting better. The swelling's starting to go down, I'm walking but only with a severe limp, but I can't bend the knee yet properly so I don't know when it is yet that I?ll be back in the gym," Bisping said. "I'm icing the hell out of it everyday, and hopefully within another week I can do some things."

He's hoping to return as early as UFC 151 on Sept. 1, an event headlined by the Light Heavyweight Championship bout between Jon Jones and Dan Henderson. Still, regardless of when he returns, he continues to be vocal about where he stands in the middleweight division, and is still eying a rematch with Chael Sonnen as soon as possible.

"I definitely think [I should face Chael if he beats Anderson Silva]," Bisping said. "The fight [at UFC on Fox 2 in January] was super, super close and a lot of people felt I won that fight, even the UFC, Dana [White] and Lorenzo [Fertitta] thought I won the fight. Chael Sonnen even thought I won the fight. In the Octagon he said he thought I won the first two rounds. So, everyone else seems to get a rematch these days instantly, why can't I get one?"

"I was fighting the No. 1 contender, but the judges awarded it to Chael. He won the fight, just because I lost doesn't mean I go to the back of the pile, it should mean I'm next in line. I just gave him the hardest fight he ever had and I'll give it to him again without a problem."

One of the reasons he's so adamant about deserving a spot in that potential title fight is the dearth of challengers in the middleweight division, all of whom he believes he should be above.

"You look at the contenders, who is there?" Bisping questioned. "Vitor Belfort just recently got beat, plus now he's injured. Yushin Okami's just been beat. There isn't too many challengers, I'm right there. Mark Munoz has a fight lined up with Chris Weidman, so if Chael wins, he needs a challenger, I'm right here."

Penick's Analysis: Bisping is delusional when it comes to the January fight. It was a close fight, and in the heat of it Sonnen may have felt he was down into the third round, but for most in attendance that night it was clear Sonnen was and did win the fight. Bisping needs to turn his concentration to recovery, then winning a fight before he starts talking Title fights. Besides, if he's hoping to return as soon as possible, the UFC isn't going to rush a title fight to suit his needs. He performed well against Sonnen, for the most part. However, he was dominated in the final round of that fight. He still doesn't have that big marquee win that will deliver a title fight, and he needs to work towards that in his next fight.

UFC 148: Chael Sonnen responds to "dirt bag" Anderson Silva's comments

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

SonnenChael_GG180_20.jpg
UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva unleashed a tirade of comments on Monday about what he was going to do to Chael Sonnen at UFC 148 in their rematch for his title. It was an unprecedented level of vitriol being spewed out of Silva's mouth, a level of anger he hadn't truly expressed in any of his fights in the UFC to date.

It was a delivery that caught people off guard. UFC President Dana White commented about how he had never seen anything like that out of the longtime Middleweight Champ; and many have wondered aloud whether Sonnen's gotten into Silva's head with his own history of comments toward the Champ, his teammates, and his country.

However, there's one man who says he wasn't the least bit surprised by Monday's outburst: Chael Sonnen.

"Well, it was nice to see the real Anderson come through," Sonnen said on Tuesday's new episode of UFC Tonight on Fuel TV. "The guy is a dirt bag, like I've told you for years. He made a lot of statements about breaking my teeth and bones, but it's not like I've never been to the orthodontists before or had my jaw stapled. What he didn't say was that he was going to break my spirit, or my will, and beat me for the belt. I don't care if he breaks my jaw, or I need staples, I kind of expect it. I think he was one off from saying he would give me a knuckle-sandwich, I'm just glad the real Anderson came out."

Sonnen continues to claim there's no "gamesmanship" from him and his comments towards Silva over the last couple of years. Additionally, he says Silva's comments don't do anything to get him more riled up for the fight than he was before.

"I don't care about being in his head. There is no gamesmanship here," Sonnen said. "It was nice to see the true Anderson Silva here. He probably thought he would get under my skin, but I've been a gangster from West Lynn, Oregon my whole life. If he thought I'd be upset because I found what I was looking for, he is wrong. On 7/7 at 7:00 PM I am going to pound my fist into his head until he gives up."

Penick's Analysis: Sonnen's shifted into low-key mode as the fight approaches. We've got just over a week left to the fight itself, and there will be some very interesting moments next week leading into the fight. With one more press conference that will see the two square off, as well as the weigh-ins, there could be some more heat added to these proceedings as the week wears on. July 7 truly can't come soon enough.

Chris Lytle willing to fight ? if you?re a millionaire staging an underground bout

Chris Lytle retired last August. He ended on a Submission of the Night win with a guillotine of Dan Hardy. It was the perfect ending to a fight career that had no championships, but plenty of memorable bouts.

Could anything make him fight again? He told MMA Junkie there might be a circumstance where he would fight again. Well, maybe if you're really rich, really classy, and want some underground entertainment that takes no preparation.

"Now, this is going to sound a little crazy, but I know there's someplace where you know like (UFC president) Dana White and his real rich friends ? some of the richest people in America ? sit around and in some dark room and have cocktails and smoke cigars, and they're betting a million (dollars) on these little underground fights," he said. "Hey man, just bring me out there for a day. I'll do one of these underground fights, and nobody has to know about it.

"That would be fun for me because it'd be the competition I enjoy. I would do that. So if you hear any real rich people putting on these fights, let me know. I'll show up."
