Brett Cooper Talks Fighting in Bellator, Life in MMA Outside the UFC

When Brett Cooper last stepped into the cage, it was for a five-minute, five-round fight for a championship in the Lords of the Cage MMA promotion. Cooper had prepared to fight for 25 minutes, but things didn't go quite as planned: He knocked Keith Berry out in just 10 seconds (video above).

"He came in real quick and aggressive, I countered him with a punch and it was over," Cooper said. "It was a strange moment because it happened so fast. It was bittersweet. But that's why you train hard, so things come easy in the fight. But I wouldn't have been disappointed if the fight would have gone more minutes."

For the 23-year-old Cooper, who will fight Alexander Schlemenko Saturday at Bellator 44 on MTV2, trying to make it as a full-time fighter outside the UFC sometimes means not wanting to win a fight too quickly: The experience of getting more minutes in the cage can be good for a fighter's development, and Lords of the Cage isn't exactly handing out six-figure Knockout of the Night bonuses, like UFC fighters can earn.

UFC 147 date in question because of United Nations convention

Though the trash talk and training camps for Anderson Silva's title bout with Chael Sonnen are underway, the date of their fight is in question. A United Nations convention set for the same time as UFC 147 in Rio de Janeiro may force the UFC to move from the June 23 date.

UFC president Dana White talked about it after UFC on Fuel 2 on Saturday.

"The problem is, they don't like the idea of us coming the same time this United Nations convention is going on," he said. "The other problem is hotel rooms. Most of the hotel rooms are being taken up. And we don't think, we know that the Anderson Silva-Chael Sonnen fight is one of the biggest sporting events this year, in the world."

A lack of hotel rooms in a city the size of Rio is an ongoing problem. They are building hotels to deal with the upcoming Olympics in 2016 and the World Cup in 2014, but that won't help the UFC this June.

Since the UFC generally plans their events well after conventions of all stripes are set, it's surprising that this snafu would just come up now. Rio+20 has been planned since January 2011. Checking what's going on in a town before booking an event is event-planning 101. That doesn't matter if you're planning a birthday party or a major sporting event.

This isn't the first scheduling problem the UFC has faced this year. In January, they were forced to postpone a planned March event in Montreal because they didn't feel the bouts were good enough for an event of that size. The postponement was the reason for the recently-ended six-week Zuffa drought.

Jon Jones and Rashad Evans make it official at UFC 145 weigh-ins (VIDEO)

Jon Jones and Rashad Evans got nose to nose as they faced off after they weighed in before their UFC 145 bout. Jones usually will look over the head of his opponent during a face-off, but looked Evans right in the eyes as Jones' brother, Baltimore Ravens player Arthur Jones, yelled. Both men were booed as they spoke briefly to the crowd.

The rest of the weigh-ins were uneventful. John Makdessi came in overweight and will pay 20 percent of his purse to Anthony Njokuani. Read on for complete results, thanks to the good people at MMA Junkie.

Alistair Overeem Offers Explanation For Positive Test

By now the MMA world is well aware of Alistair?s recently botched urinalysis. The top heavyweight contender registered a 14:1 testosterone-to-epitestosterone level, which more than doubles the allowable ratio of 6:1. 

Overeem was pulled from his scheduled May 26th encounter with champion Junior dos Santos, and now awaits his fate, which will be issued by the Nevada State Athletic commission tomorrow. In advance of the hearing, Overeem has finally broken his silence by issuing a statement to the public in which he offers a brief word to fans expressing his regret, and offers a potential reason for his profoundly high testosterone levels.

?To my friends and fans, 

I am deeply saddened to announce that on Friday, April 20, I respectfully withdrew from the May 26 event so that I can request a continuance until my situation with the Nevada State Athletic Commission is resolved. 

I cannot express how sorry I am to the Commission, Junior Dos Santos, the fans, the owners and employees of the UFC, my friends and family and anyone else who this has affected. 

I absolutely do not believe in, nor do I use performance-enhancing drugs. I am a clean fighter and I will do whatever it takes to prove this to everyone. 

Prior to the UFC 146 press conference in March, I aggravated an old rib injury on my left side. My doctor prescribed, and I accepted, an anti-inflammatory medication that was mixed with testosterone. I was completely unaware that testosterone was one of the ingredients in the medication. Although I was unaware, I do realize it is my job to know what I am putting into my body. 

I respect the Nevada Commissioners and Executive Director Keith Kizer and what they are doing to keep.

ADHD: Wicked Fast iPhone Photo ToDo Lists

When I made the transition from paper to digital back in the 90s when Palm Pilots still roamed the earth and Man was preparing for the impending Y2K apocalypse, I said good-bye to that trusty old standby for ToDo lists: the pen & paper. It was all digital for me, and I was prepared to spend as much time as was required to get my very complicated repeating ToDos to beep on cue and sync with the desktop for security. It may have occasionally required hours to bang out syncing bugs, but I was living in the future, baby!

Now that I'm older and wiser and finished selling a box of old Palm Pilots and Sony Cli�s on eBay for $20, I realize digital isn't always better, and I keep a pen & paper handy just in case. But I still love living in the future. I'm just smarter about it.

One smart trick I've come up with is to create fast ToDo lists by using my iPhone's camera when I don't have time to write items down. iPhones, smartphones, and most plain vanilla cellphones come with built-in cameras. That built-in camera is perfect for on-the-fly list making. Late for a meeting, but need to pop by the store on your way back to buy a few things? Snap a picture of them on your way out the door.

Don't be fancy. Don't launch your simulated analogue tintype app with 40 types of papers and variable temperature settings. Just snap, snap, snap! When you arrive at the store, open your photo album, go shopping, and delete each photo as you add the item to your cart.

You can group the items into one photo, or, as I prefer, run around the house and snap each item in its habitat. Don't worry about people seeing pictures of your toilet paper roll. You'll be deleting it within the hour. However, if you use cloud services and don't want to clutter up your stream with these ToDo photos, use a camera app that keeps its photos separate from the system roll. Camera+ on the iPhone is excellent for this. Just don't let yourself be distracted by its dizzying array of imaging tweaks.

There are apps (e.g. VisualList) that let you create complicated folders of ToDo lists & projects built entirely of photos, but I recommend sticking with your built-in camera for quick and dirty ToDo list making. With practice, you'll be surprised how quickly you can create these lists without picking up a single pad of paper.

Jon Jones finds the one thing he?s not good at (VIDEO)

The people at the Major League Baseball invited UFC light heavyweight champ Jon Jones to the MLB Fan Cave to give him a chance to chill out and watch some baseball. It turns out that though he's good at most things that he tries, Jones is not good at just sitting on a couch and taking in some sports.

Jose Aldo now likely to headline UFC 147 in Brazil, venue not yet secured

The UFC officially announced on Tuesday morning that the Anderson Silva-Chael Sonnen rematch will move from Brazil to Las Vegas, now headlining the UFC 148 card on July 7 in Las Vegas. That announcement leaves the UFC 147 event in Brazil without its big headlining fight, and UFC President Dana White also announced that they haven't yet secured a venue for that event.

Penick's Analysis: It's certainly a disappointment for the UFC and for Anderson Silva especially that they're not able to pull this off down in Brazil as planned, but as White said today, everything that could go wrong did go wrong in trying to get it set up. They'll find a venue for this card, and Jose Aldo will make for a solid headliner. I'm not sure who his challenger would be, but there are a couple of possibilities. The first that pops into mind is Erik Koch, who is returning from injury, but all of that is still yet to be figured out.

UFC Champ Jon Jones thinks Alexander Gustafsson closing in on title shot

Following a win over Thiago Silva at UFC on Fuel 2 earlier this month, Alexander Gustafsson was showered with praise from many corners, with some comparing him favorably to UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones.

In the lead up to his own April fight last week at UFC 145, Jones commented on that comparison, and while he disagrees with those who find similarities between the two, he did express respect for the young Swede, and expects to see him get a title shot soon.

"I don't think it's appropriate people are comparing us," Jones at the final pre-fight press conference for UFC 145 (transcribed by MMAWeekly.com. "The only similarities that we have is we're both tall, and that's it. We're completely different athletes. I have a wrestler base where I shoot and throw from the clinch, I kick fast and accurate; he has really great boxing."

"I think he's pretty close to a title shot. I think maybe if he wins two more fights against some top guys, maybe like Lyoto [Machida] or Rashad [Evans] or somebody, somebody that can push him in different categories."

Jones feels Gustafsson's got very little left to prove before earning his shot, but there were a couple of specific types of fights he expects to see Gustafsson get past before he gets his shot.

"I'd like to see him against another wrestler and I would like to see him against a worthy striker. Then I think a title shot would be very appropriate," Jones said.

"I like his demeanor, though. He has some swagger. He exudes winning from the second he steps in the cage. I think the kid has the potential to be a star."

Penick's Analysis: Jones and Gustafsson just might be headed for a collision later this year, as Jones faces his next challenger in Dan Henderson this summer. Gustafsson may be next in line should he score one more victory, and we'll see what the two of them have to offer one another inside the cage. The two of them are both very young, and immensely talented, and a title fight between the two could be one of the great battles of this next generation of fighters.

Now that he?s been booked to fill the gap that Alistair Overeem created at UFC 146, Mir is addressing the fight, and his personal stance on the somewhat unexpected revelation. 

"I just kind of did the math in my own mind," Mir stated on The MMA Hour. "My team around me, we all pretty much felt that if dos Santos were to stay on the card, and Overeem was not able to challenge for the title, then I was the most logical person to step in. So as we were still training for Cain (Velasquez), there was that at the back of my mind, okay, be prepared for this to happen also." 

Mir doesn?t pull the punches however, and he?s got an idea of what to expect once the octagon door locks at UFC 146. 

"I still pose a very large threat to dos Santos. I still think it'll be an interesting cat-and-mouse game between me and Junior, because what I want to be able to impose on him, he's going to try to avoid, and vice versa." 

While Mir certainly isn?t unveiling his gameplan, it seems he?s well aware that is going to be a challenging fight, likely for both men.

These are uncertain times for women's mixed martial arts. Strikeforce has been the industry leader in female fights, while the UFC has maintained that it has no interest in putting women in the Octagon. So now that the UFC runs Strikeforce, does that mean women's MMA is endangered?

Not necessarily. The Strikeforce women were invited to the UFC's recent fighter summit in Las Vegas, which indicates that Zuffa thinks women have a future within the company, and next month's return of the sport's biggest female star, Gina Carano, will result in a publicity boost for women's MMA.

So as I review the top 10 female fighters in mixed martial arts, I'm confident that it's a list of fighters whose futures are bright. Even if I'm not sure where and when most of them will fight next.

World traveler Dana White in air an astounding 33 hours in four-day span

Yes, Dana White is worth millions of dollars. Yes, he gets to hang out with all sorts of cool celebrities. Yes, he has a private plane and a fancy sports car and multiple homes and, well, anything that anyone worth nine figures can buy.

But do you really want to be Dana White? Do you really want to do what it takes to be the president of the Ultimate Fighting Championship? In theory, it sounds fairly enticing, until you hear some of the details -- the gory details, in my opinion.

White said Wednesday from his home in Las Vegas that from late Friday through Tuesday, he spent a total of 50 hours in the air. After figuring the flight times, it appears the correct number is 33 hours in the air, though that doesn't account for stops or waiting time. For the mathematically challenged, 33 hours is a full day and a quarter.

White's journey started late Friday, after the live airing of "The Ultimate Fighter" in Las Vegas. After White completed his obligations on the show at about 8 p.m. Pacific, he headed to the airport for a flight to Stockholm, Sweden.

The plane left Las Vegas at 10 p.m. Pacific. About 11 hours later, he was in Stockholm to be cageside for UFC on Fuel 2. When the fight card ended, White and crew hopped a plane for a six-hour flight to Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, for meetings with his partners. When the meetings were complete, it was an almost 16-hour flight from Abu Dhabi to his home in Las Vegas.

"I don't know what it is, but I don't get jet-lagged," White told Cagewriter. "I guess I'm lucky. But you know how on the Internet, a lot of people say I'm fat? I get it a lot -- 'Hey, you fat pig,' that kind of thing -- but when people meet me, they say, 'You know, you're not really as fat as you look in pictures or on TV.' But when I'm in the plane that long, I kind of get bloated, swelled up, whatever you want to call it. I can't even close my fist sometimes."

White's travels aren't done. He'll be in Las Vegas through Friday, handling his duties with "The Ultimate Fighter" yet again. After the fight, he'll hop a plane for Atlanta, so that he can attend UFC 145 at Philips Arena on Saturday.

That's a simple four-hour cross-country trip. After the news conference that will begin early Sunday morning, White will hop his plane back to Vegas for a nice little West Coast to East Coast commute in a span of about 30 hours.

He's not flying Spirit Airlines, the worst airline known to man, and he's not squeezed into a middle seat next to a 330-pound guy who smells like he last showered in the Clinton Administration, but it's air time nonetheless.

There may be some folks who find that kind of a job appealing, but don't count me among that group.

UFC's Alistair Overeem officially denied license by NSAC, cannot reapply for nine months

The UFC made the right call in pulling Alistair Overeem from UFC 146. The Nevada State Athletic Commission denied him a license on Tuesday following a lengthy hearing, which went forward after the commission denied Overeem's request for a continuance.

The crux of Overeem's case was that his doctor, a Hector Molina out of Texas, prescribed him an injectable cocktail in January to deal with several injuries sustained over the last year, and that he took two injections without knowing that there was testosterone included in the mixture.

However, the credibility of Molina was very much in question, as his testimony during the hearing was a jumbled mess of misremembering, contradicting statements, and a general lack of clarity. Additionally, there was an issue regarding the date of the test, as Overeem initially got in a vehicle and left after the UFC 146 press conference despite his camp being told he needed to remain there to be tested. He was tracked down by the UFC finally and administered his test.

He claimed he was leaving the press conference to avoid being served legal documents by Golden Glory representatives, though that story is in dispute as well, as the time stamp for the papers served that day may be prior to his claim.

Despite an admission that he injected this substance that did contain testosterone, the Commission ultimately opted not to make him wait the entire year before being able to reapply after denying his license application. Instead, they backdated the date of the application to the date of his failed drug test, March 27, and will allow him to apply for a license again after only nine months from that date.

Penick's Analysis: The commission failed to send the correct message by shortening the time period for Overeem. There was no evidence presented that exonerates him from taking a banned substance, and the testimony of his "doctor" was ridiculous at best. Molina has a lot of shadiness behind him, from a domestic assault arrest, to botched medical procedures, illegally prescribing medications, and more, and yet they essentially gave Overeem a slap on the wrist. He's been removed from the UFC 146 event, yes, but this nine-month backdating to March technically means he could fight by the UFC's year-end event, though the license application couldn't be approved until a day or two before he would fight. Overeem's story is a complete farce, and the commission failed to call him out on it on Tuesday to the extent they could have. Still, Overeem will not be able to fight for almost the entirety of 2012, and the UFC will not be happy with him over the entire situation.
