The Importance of Routine, or Why I Will Not Research "Terra Nova" Any More Today

Again it is Wensday and I am looking at the sands of the hourglass piling up against me. My shift starts in a few hours, so of course this was a perfect time to get distracted researching whether "Terra Nova" was renewed for another season or not. I was depressed; I needed the distraction. Right?

I've been working on a review of Apple iOS 5's Reminder program. I've run the app through its paces and come up with a list of strengths and weaknesses. Unfortunately, I've been swamped with life, work, &c. and found myself missing that self-imposed Wensday deadline every week. When was the last time I wrote here anyway? 1998? I can't recall.

So, obviously I'm not writing. What have I been doing?

Right now I am dealing with the disappointing news that my Christmas employment comes to an end next Friday. Apparently, my kids' schedule limitations were a factor. I've worked something out with my former wife and updated my availability, but the few scant jobs have already been offered to the lucky few. I don't really stand much of a chance now. This could be a blessing in disguise. So much exposure to random strangers is giving me a cold every other week, and I've been so busy working and recuperating that I haven't had much time to think forward to my future. Working in retail shouldn't really be the only event on my horizon.

Well, I've been thinking about my Depression lately. I'm divorced. I'm celebrating my birthday this Friday without my family of 23 years. I'm laid off. I'm lonely. My bosses are twenty years younger than I am (and trim & beautiful in all the ways I am not). I can't drown my sorrows in my favorite Cream o' Weber eggnog because Darigold bought them out. And my kids have the Wii with them at their mother's. These are truly tough times.

Maybe it's time to live for ME during the two weeks I don't have the kids instead of surviving as a zombie. Maybe I need to blog and write and draw and create to help offset the crushing disappointments of my life. After all, just because I can't watch Wii Netflix from the comfort of my couch, should that be a reason to stop living? If I'm not careful I'll end up watching all ten seasons of Stargate SG-1 again.

So for now on I will post something on Wensday whether it is an in-depth post or not. Even without photos if I have to, as I am doing today. With ADHD, we need structure and routine to stay productive, even if our distractibility fights at that structure. This becomes difficult when we, the distracted, must provide our own structure, but since the alternative is low self-esteem due to gross unproductivity and wasted years, I'd rather bite the bullet and plod along. Already I can feel a small shift in my mind as I forced myself to do this today instead of twiddling my thumbs metaphorically before my shift started.

Routine creates habits, and habits, more specifically the good ones, help us offset our absentmindedness. Without structure, we can do a lot worse than spend twenty minutes researching TV shows. We can flit from distraction to distraction for hours and piddle away our precious time.

One way I enforce structure is with a barrage of alarms on my iPhone. The same calendar is shared on my Mac and iPad, so all three devices start booping, beeping, and humming every time I have an event come up. It's overkill, but it helps keep me on my toes. How do you like to rein in your distractibility and establish a routine?

Follow me on Twitter for my ADHD escapades at @SplinteredMind or my novel writing progress over at @DouglasCootey. I also explore iPhone photography with Instagram as douglascootey (peek). And if you're a glutton for punishment you can friend me on Facebook as well. I've been quiet on the social networking scene lately, but I expect that to pick up after the holidays. Lucky you.

Phil Davis ?happy? Rashad Evans poked holes in his game

When Phil Davis was put on the UFC's second Fox card against Rashad Evans, he knew the pressure was on. Not only did he need to keep his undefeated streak going, but he also needed to create an exciting bout for network fans tuning into the UFC for the first time.

The result? A fight dominated by Rashad Evans as Davis struggled to find a rhythm. Davis told the MMA Hour that he couldn't slow down in the bout, which ended up exhausting him.

"I got myself into one of the situations where you've got to go all out to get out of that, and put out a lot of energy," he said. "That kind of put me behind on momentum, and from there, Rashad was just the calmer guy. He eased into the fight better. More and more, I was trying to do more to gain momentum and he was just calm and collected."

It was the first loss of Davis' MMA career. He ended his NCAA wrestling career with a championship, so it's the first time Davis has lost in at least four years. A loss like that can shake a man, but Davis took a different view of it.

"I'm glad he poked holes in my game," he said. "Because now I can fix some of those holes and know where the No. 2 guy in the world is going to beat me. Now I have a benchmark. Losing is not the worst thing in the world. The worst thing in the world is not getting better. I'm glad I got that fight. I'm glad I got it twice, and I'm just real excited about where I'm at in my career."

While he waits for his next opponent, Davis is helping his friend and teammate, Dominick Cruz, coach on this season of "The Ultimate Fighter." At 27, he's still a young and exciting fighter who has plenty to learn about MMA. A newly refocused Davis should be a force to reckon with.

Time has come for UFC and Rampage Jackson to part ways

(Updated with comment from UFC owner Lorenzo Fertitta at 7:47:42 ET on March 13, 2012)

There is a simple solution to the Quinton "Rampage" Jackson mess that, for some reason, is apparently being overlooked.

Cut him.

The UFC ought to sever ties with its mercurial former light heavyweight champion as quickly and completely as possible.

There is no good being done for any side in this equation by forcing an unhappy Jackson to fight the final bout on his UFC contract.

It certainly won't do Jackson any good to hang around. He's apparently had it with the UFC and has complained about the opponents matchmaker Joe Silva has picked for him to fight, his pay, and the seeming lack of gratitude UFC officials have shown him for fighting while injured.

Speaking to Bas Rutten on HDNet's "Inside MMA," Jackson said he is displeased that the UFC is matching him with wrestlers who don't want to fight. Four of his last five opponents were wrestlers, but there's more to the story than just the UFC putting him in against wrestlers.

On May 29, 2010, he lost to Rashad Evans in a battle for the No. 1 contender's spot at 205. He came back at UFC 123 on Nov. 20, 2010 with a win over karate expert Lyoto Machida in a battle between former champions looking to get back into the mix.

Next up, at UFC 130, was wrestler Matt Hamill on May 28, after a series of potential other opponents fell through. Beating Hamill earned (got?) Jackson a title shot against wrestler Jon Jones at UFC 135 on Sept. 24. After being submitted by Jones, the UFC put Jackson in against wrestler Ryan Bader on Feb. 26 at UFC 144 in Japan.

Jackson missed weight by five pounds in Japan, pointing to a knee injury suffered in training. He could have pulled out, but was so desperate to fight in Japan that he remained on the card. That was his choice, but now we're supposed to shower him with thanks because he did what nearly every one of his peers do every time they compete and went out and fought hurt?

Please.

Cutting Jackson would be the wise move for all parties, because Jackson clearly doesn't want to be around, he's no longer a particularly exciting fighter and all the attention being paid to his complaints takes attention away from those who could use it.

UFC owner Lorenzo Fertitta said the company would not cut Jackson and said it would like to match him in the summer with former champion Mauricio "Shogun" Rua. He said he disagrees with Jackson's complaints, but said "he's entitled to his opinion."

"He has one more fight on his contract and our position is that he's contractually obligated to take a fight and fulfill his obligation, just as he'd expect us to fulfill our obligation," Fertitta told Cagewriter. "He is, to some extent, still a draw. An interesting fight we'd like to make, one we've talked about, would be him and Shogun. I think that would be an interesting fight. They're both coming off a loss, they have a history and they have both expressed interest in the fight in the past. That would round out things in an interesting way."

Jackson did a lot for the UFC and deserves to be recognized for that. His knockout of Chuck Liddell at UFC 71 on May 26, 2007 is one of the seminal moments in Zuffa history and won't soon been forgotten. His fight with Wanderlei Silva at UFC 92 was breathtaking.

He was one of the stalwarts of the PRIDE Fighting Championship and should be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame based upon his achievements in the two organizations.

That, though, is for the future. For the present, Jackson is complaining about his lot in life, which is particularly galling considering his recent performances.

It's time UFC president Dana White ended the circus and cut Jackson.

Maybe that will make him happy.

Jackson only wants guys who will engage him in a slugfest and he wants to be hailed as a conquering hero for doing it. So maybe nothing will make him happy, because that's not life in one of the hottest divisions in MMA.

Perhaps Jackson will be energized fighting for Bellator or some other promotion. Perhaps he'll get back to being the fighter he was when he was an absolute can't miss.

It's debatable, but there is one thing that absolutely, unequivocally not:

The fight with Rua would be fascinating, but the time has come for the UFC to sever its ties with him.

Great merits about Cast Iron Kitchenware

Kitchenware had evolved quite a bit from the time it was introduced, as a result, former cast iron pots and pans which had been a favorite cookware in the past were actually left neglected considering the addition of most recent versions of catering equipment that may be lighter. However, there are still different gains involving cast iron catering equipment which other cooking equipment do not offer.

Seasoning cast iron kitchenware

One of the many drawbacks involving using cast iron cookware is that you simply need to season the pot each and every time you plan to set it to use to ensure that it won't end up getting rusty. However, seasoning the actual catering equipment supplies, may result in a non-stick covering that modern catering equipment just can't be at par with.

Seasoning a kitchenware is simple. Firstly you have got to really clean your own catering equipment supplies using a gentle soap and also warm water. As soon as it is really dried, apply veggie oil or sometimes lard in the cast iron kitchenware. Accomplish that process before you make meals and when you are storing your actual cast iron cookware.

Managed heating temperature

An additional benefit of cast iron catering equipment is usually the fact that the item can certainly disseminate high heat uniformly when compared with many other materials. Because of cast iron cookware, you can cook consistently and even more proficiently than before, saving you amount of time in putting together a burn-free meal. Cast iron cooking equipment is good for boiling chicken eggs, stir frying veggies or maybe almost everything which entails proficient heat regulation while cooking.

A really durable cookware

Cast iron is a type of heavy metal that during usual working scenarios, is almost unbreakable. It's actually a form of cooking equipment that could be handed down to family members yet still work the way since it was initially procured perfectly.

Cheaper than the large majority of cookware available in the market

As you may have observed, Teflon cooking equipment is really expensive because of the non-stick coating it has. It is easy to reach the similar outcome by getting a functional cast iron cookware and consequently taking your time when it comes to seasoning it day after day. The end product is a far more natural non-stick covering on just a certainly more affordable value when compared with teflon kitchenware.

Experience health gains

While Teflon-coated kitchenware often deliver cancer causing compounds, cast iron kitchenware, conversely, other than simply being non-stick is known to deliver low risk amounts of iron.

Our own bodies needs iron since it is needed for the very blood circulation given that it allows you to bring o2 all through our body. Low iron indicates flow of blood all over your body won't be adequate, forcing anyone to end up getting worn-out quite often, and in some cases experience head pain.

Weekend Warriors: Bellator?s lightweight final four emerges and Lawrence advances on TUF

Welcome to another edition of weekend warriors, your rundown of what happened while you were watching the state of Kentucky break out in a war over a round, orange ball.

Bellator got to its lightweight final four. Watch the recap video above of Lloyd Woodard's fantastic win over Patricky Freire. (Seriously. It's worth your seven minutes.) Rick Hawn, an Olympic judo player, showed off striking skills with a TKO halfway through the first round. Brent Weedman advanced to the semifinals with a second-round submission of J.J. Ambrose. Thiago Michel rounds out the field after a split decision win over Rene Nazare.

TUF Awkwardness

This week's episode of "The Ultimate Fighter" started with last week's awkward fight pick. Since Dominick Cruz's team won the first fight, he had the next fight pick. When given the chance, he picked Justin Lawrence, the no. 1 pick from his own team. But he didn't name an opponent. Instead, Cruz asked Urijah Faber who he wanted to face Lawrence.

Put on the spot, Faber didn't have an answer, and no one from the team raised his hand to fight. Yikes. Cruz finally picked Cristiano Marcello, the experienced BJJ specialist who trained at Chute Boxe in Brazil.

Team Faber had good reason to be concerned, as Lawrence stopped Marcello in the second round. A push kick to the abdomen in the first round knocked Marcello down, but Marcello was effective in pushing the fight. His success was short-lived. Midway through the the second round, Lawrence threw a big left and ended the fight.

The second win for Team Cruz gave them another fight pick. Myles Jury from Team Cruz will take on Al Iaquinta from Team Faber.

Turning Off the Inner Voice of Depression - Part III

If you've spent a lifetime believing the inner voice of depression, you've likely developed the habit, almost the instinct, of seeing yourself as incapable, inadequate, somehow basically wrong. You believe it's your nature, and you feel shame and guilt about almost any mistake or even your best achievements. They feel hollow, the result of dumb luck. You "know" you're still a failure, and sooner or later everyone else will see through you.

Gus Johnson: Any MMA Fighter Would Kill Pacquiao In the Cage

by Michael David SmithGus Johnson, the broadcaster who called the blow-by-blow on Manny Pacquiao's victory over Shane Mosley and who also calls Strikeforce fights on Showtime, has weighed in on the frequently discussed subject of how a boxer would do in MMA. And he doesn't like any boxer's chances.

In a radio interview with Dan Patrick, Johnson was asked how Pacquiao would do in an MMA fight against an MMA fighter, and Johnson said it's ridiculous to even think Pacquiao could last.

"He'd get killed," Johnson said of Pacquiao in the cage. "No question. Tapped out, easily. In a minute."

Leonard Garcia vs. Matt Grice booked for UFC on FX 3 on June 8

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

A featherweight bout between Leonard Garcia and Matt Grice is on tap for UFC on FX 3. The UFC announced the fight on Thursday.

Garcia has lost two straight in the UFC after a highly controversial win in his UFC return bout against Nam Phan in December of 2010. His most recent loss was by decision in a rematch against Phan.

Grice was brought back to the UFC last June after a two year stint outside of the organization, but lost his return bout to Ricardo Lamas by TKO in the first round.

UFC on FX 3 is headlined by the flyweight bout between Demetrious Johnson and Ian McCall. The event takes place on June 8, though the location of the card has not yet been revealed.

Bellator fighter off Friday?s card, wanted by police

Eric Oria was supposed to show up at Bellator's weigh-ins on Thursday to officially weigh in for his first professional fight in Hammond, Ind. Instead, the Indiana State Police showed, looking to take Oria into custody.

The Northwest Indiana Times reported Oria missed Thursday's weigh-ins. Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney said Oria scratched from the card before weigh-ins because of "physical problems."

Oria had an outstanding warrant on a charge of criminal recklessness. He was scheduled to fight Lance Surma on the show's undercard. After two amateur fights in Hammond, he was set to make his pro debut in the same town as his other fights.

In an interview with the Times earlier in the week, he said the fight was "on the highlights of his life." According to MMA Recap, the fight was pulled because it was too late to find a replacement for Oria.

Oria's no-show was not the only shake-up to Friday's card. The featherweight tournament was shook up as Genair da Silva did not make weight and was replaced by Kenny Foster. Foster will now take on "PoPo" Bezerra.

TUF rematch between Court McGee and Nick Ring headed to UFC 149 in Calgary

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

A middleweight bout between Court McGee and Nick Ring is headed to UFC 149 in Calgary, according to multiple published reports.

The bout is a rematch from The Ultimate Fighter season 11. Ring defeated McGee by a questionable majority decision to advance in the season 11 tournament, but when he couldn't continue because of a knee injury, McGee took his place and won that season of the reality competition.

Since that time, McGee has gone 3-1, losing for the first time in the UFC in his last bout against Constantinos Philippou. Ring won his first two fights in the Octagon after returning from injury, but suffered the first loss of his career his last time out at UFC 135, a decision loss to Tim Boetsch.

UFC, eh? UFC will head to Canada three times in 2012

Mark your calendars, Canadian fans. The UFC announced today they will visit the home and native land of welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre three times in the remainder of 2012.

They will start in Calgary on July 21, where Jose Aldo will fight a yet-to-be-named fighter. After that, it's UFC 152 in Toronto Sept. 22, and UFC 154 in Montreal Nov. 17. St. Pierre, who was present at the press conference, announced the Montreal date.

GSP also gave an update on his health, saying he is progressing smoothly and is hoping to be back by November.

"When you get an injury like I have and you're off for a long period of time, the only thing you wish is to get back fast as possible," he said. "I don't know if it will be in the U.S. or Canada, but I wish and I pray that I have a chance to perform in 2012. No matter where it will be, I want to come back and fight in 2012."

St. Pierre is a native of Montreal, and has enjoyed great success when fighting in front of the rabid home crowd Canada can provide. His last two fights were won in Canada, and he exacted revenge on Matt Serra, one of the few men to beat him, in Montreal.

Though he isn't likely to rush his recovery from an ACL tear, he also has plenty of motivation to be ready to go on Nov. 17.

MMA Top 10 Women's Pound-for-Pound

by Michael David SmithGina CaranoThese are uncertain times for women's mixed martial arts. Strikeforce has been the industry leader in female fights, while the UFC has maintained that it has no interest in putting women in the Octagon. So now that the UFC runs Strikeforce, does that mean women's MMA is endangered?

Not necessarily. The Strikeforce women were invited to the UFC's recent fighter summit in Las Vegas, which indicates that Zuffa thinks women have a future within the company, and next month's return of the sport's biggest female star, Gina Carano, will result in a publicity boost for women's MMA.

So as I review the top 10 female fighters in mixed martial arts, I'm confident that it's a list of fighters whose futures are bright. Even if I'm not sure where and when most of them will fight next.

ENNIS: A very special conversation with Anderson Silva and Ed Soares on Chael Sonnen

By: Shawn Ennis, MMATorch Senior Columnist

Staff06Ennis_130_24.jpg
Note: This is an interview I did with Anderson Silva* right after the announcement that his rematch with Chael Sonnen would take place in an 80,000 seat stadium. At first glance it was so boring that I decided not to even submit it to the Torch. But I got to thinking that Ed Soares' translations were too short for how long Anderson was talking, so I did some further investigation into what the champion really said. That?s where it got interesting. What you will see below is my questions, followed by Anderson Silva's real answers, followed by what Soares claims was said.Enjoy.

Shawn Ennis: Anderson, it was just announced that you will fight Chael Sonnen for a second time, almost two years after your thrilling victory at UFC 117, and it will happen in Rio. What are you thinking on the heels of this announcement?

Anderson Silva: What am I thinking? I'll tell you what I'm thinking, you jabroni. Chael Sonnen, you foolish little man. Do you know what I'm going to do to you when we fight again? It's going to be so bad, Chael. It gives me nightmares when I think about it. You are obviously too stupid to be afraid, or else you would not take this fight.

Ed Soares: I'm very excited and honored to fight in front of my hometown fans in Brazil.

Ennis: As you know, Chael has been very outspoken about wanting to fight you again. Does that give you any extra motivation coming into the rematch?

Silva: Ed, who let this guy interview me? Does he think no one has asked these questions before? This is ridiculous. Hey Chael, remember that time two years ago when I tapped you out with busted ribs? I fought you with busted ribs for five rounds, and you couldn't put me away. And you were on steroids! Let me ask you something, Chael Sonnen. Do you know how bad it hurts to have injured ribs? Do you? Chuck Norris broke his ribs and went crying to his mommy. I defended my UFC championship for five rounds and walked out still known as the best in the world. You don't even deserve a rematch. What have you done? Whom have you beaten? Yushin Okami? I steamrolled him. Nate Marquardt? I laid the smack down on him in one round. You couldn't finish either of them. You held them down for three rounds, and Marquardt still almost got you at the end. Remember that guy Demian Maia? Yeah, the guy who tapped your no-submission-defense-having self in about two minutes? The same guy who just dropped to welterweight? Remember him? I clowned him. For five rounds. He couldn't do anything to me. I clowned him so bad that I wore myself out. If the fight could be stopped due to excessive clowning, I would have won before the championship rounds.

Soares: The trash talk doesn't mean anything to me. I prepare for this fight like I prepare for all fights. It's just another fight.

Ennis: Do you think Chael Sonnen deserves a rematch?

Silva: Of course not! I beat him with broken ribs! Do you know what's going to happen to this man when I'm healthy? In front of 80,000 of my closest friends? Chael Sonnen, your mother is going to weep when she sees what I've done to you. Your friends won't recognize you. You'll be lucky to retain all your limbs. Have you seen what my striking does to people? Do you know how hard I'm hitting them when I'm healthy, Chael Sonnen? I've never hit anyone harder than about 40% of my power. That jab that put down Forrest Griffin? That was like a sparring session to me. In my real sparring sessions, sometimes I actually do them in my sleep in order to challenge myself a little. But you? I'm giving you all my power, boy. I might separate your cranium from your body. I'm going to hit you so hard as to rupture your steroid bacne. Yeah, I said it. Steroids ain't helping you against me, Chael Sonnen. You want to do what you did last time, you better bring some friends, and tell them to bring weapons. Because there is no man alive that can beat me alone. Let alone some fool who can't bust a grape in a fruit fight. I am the best fighter to ever walk planet Earth, Chael Sonnen. You are a guy who rips off Superstar Billy Graham in your post-fight interviews and finishes one fight in five years. You think you're going to beat me?

Soares: If it were up to me he would not get a rematch, but that's who the UFC wants me to fight, so I will.

Ennis: Do you think it will actually be dangerous for Chael Sonnen to be in Brazil given the things he's said about this country and the people who live here?

Silva: You listen to me, you sorry excuse for a blogger. The only thing Chael Sonnen has to fear when he comes to Brazil is Anderson Silva. That's me. Do you know who controls the people of Brazil? Ask anyone. I do. Yeah, they might want to break Chael Sonnen in half, but I tell them to lay off and they do my bidding. But the people of Brazil will have their blood, Chael Sonnen. I will give it to them. And then I will dance around your broken body like a wild man.

Soares: No, I do not think so.

Ennis: Anderson, thanks for your time, and good luck at UFC 147.

Silva: Shut up. Are we done? I have to take a nap while having a sparring session with three guys.

Soares: Thank you.

*This is not true. I never interviewed Anderson Silva. Nothing in this "interview" was ever actually said.

Bipolar Recovery as Transformation

I always thought of recovery from bipolar disorder as a return to the BB (before bipolar) era, but as Class 10 of NAMI’s Family-to-Family course points out, recovery doesn’t necessarily mean going back to the “good old days.” It’s often healthier to look at recovery as moving forward ? a process of transformation, of becoming [...]

Despite recent dark fight, UFC to continue streaming bouts on Facebook

While the UFC's recent Australian event will forever be remembered for a scoring debacle that caused a rematch between Demetrious Johnson and Ian McCall, the event was also notable for another reason: one untelevised fight.

UFC on FX 2's first fight, a heavyweight affair between Shawn Jordan and Oli Thompson, was just the second UFC fight in more than one year that was not broadcast live in some form.

Despite the snub, UFC president Dana White said the UFC plans on continuing to stream preliminary matchups on Facebook, though there will be rare times when it simple doesn't make sense.

Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen rematch is on for June in Brazil

After months of rumors, the UFC finally confirmed that it will head back to Brazil in June. At Joao Havelange Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Anderson Silva will rematch with Chael Sonnen for the UFC middleweight belt. After a season of coaching of the first Brazilian "The Ultimate Fighter," Wanderlei Silva and Vitor Belfort will fight. To the press release:

"This will be the biggest sporting event of the year," said UFC president Dana White. "Bigger than the NFL, the NBA, you name it - UFC 147 will be the biggest. The whole world wants to see this fight between Silva and Sonnen. We are broadcast in over 150 countries in 22 languages in half a billion homes. Wherever those fans are, they are going to be watching this fight."

Don't anybody tell White, but this is an Olympic year. One fight card in Brazil will not surpass even the opening ceremony for the Summer Olympics, but it's a nice goal. Joao Havelange holds 46,931 for a soccer match, but presumably, floor seats will help the UFC break its record of 55,000 set at UFC 129 in Toronto.

Regardless of how many people tune in or turn out for the fights, this rematch will be fun. The last time the two fought, Sonnen beat up Silva for 4 1/2 rounds. Three minutes into the final round, Silva used a triangle armbar to submit Sonnen. Since then, animosity between the two has reached epic levels. Sonnen still refuses to admit that he lost to Silva.

Though it's still March, the buildup for this fight should border on insane. Before we get lost in the insanity, how do you see this fight going down? Tell us in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Depression: The Best Cure Apparently Is Embarrassment

Today I almost invited a girl to a play. Fortunately, I came to my senses. Not yet. Way too soon. There are a few things I need to get in order in my life before I start making room for somebody new. Here?s a sample of the list:

A face not even a mother could love
  1. Achieve a gold platinum album with me playing favorite movie tunes on a penny whistle. Pan pipes optional.
  2. Become a rich land magnate on the Moon, with virally bad YouTube infomercials.
  3. Become translated.
  4. Learn how to take a serious photograph.

    Not necessarily in this order.

I must admit it is a work in progress, especially that translated part. Hooboy, will I get heat for my brony review. I have yet to see the fallout over that one. So instead of an awkward night on the town, I'll be watching "Arsenic and Old Lace" with my 13 year old. I couldn't be happier. And then I can focus on why I'm really there: to show my support for my friend, Heather Monson, one of the murderous old biddies.

As I struggle with Depression today, I am doing many things on my list to fight Depression off. I've exercised. I've sketched. I've organized my laundry and washed the dishes. I've made a fool of myself online. And yet Depression remains. Since I still have some fight left in me, I figure I'll blog, too. Maybe that will help me switch gears and feel better (or dig myself in deeper). And what better way than to discuss my charming new singles life!

I had asked one of the Elf's friends to cut my hair. He was studying at the local Paul Mitchell school in Sandy, and on a whim I thought it would be worth a shot. As he began removing tons of multi-colored hair that now included a lot of gray, the conversation moved onto the subject of dating. I talked about how I wasn't really ready yet and had promised myself I would wait until March 15th?the Ides of March and a bit over the six month mark?before I even considered it. Then I reflected on some odd conversations I had had with other single women and divorcees over the past few months and said aloud, "But I don't think the girls are going to be patient with me while I wait." I said it rather seriously, and with some nervousness.

But it sounded boastful, right? Yeah, I thought so too, so I changed the subject. Three minutes later there was a knock at the door. And I knew. It was a girl.

There I was with half my head shorn, hair all over my face, and a cute little cape around my neck. Unfortunately, the Elf was in the back room, so I asked her hairstylist friend with a nose ring and two snake bites to get the door.

"Is Douglas there??"

I know I'm healing because I thrilled to hear that, but what was I going to do? I felt like an idiot. How could I look cool when I looked like a half-trimmed hedge in drapes? Since there was no help for it, I opened the door wider and said "Hi!". Oh, the look in her eyes. It was my old neighbor who had moved to another building. She had brought over cookies for me and the girls. I assured her that the girls would get the cookies this weekend when they made the switch, and she, looking very awkward, let me get back to whatever I was doing and said "bye."

I went over to her place later to give my thanks properly, but that was a disaster, too. She had nine kids in her kitchen and I was terribly distracted by her little munchkin who looked from me to Mummy and giggled like Ernie on Sesame Street.

I am so very not ready for this. But I feel much better having written all this. So onwards with my day. And maybe with this picture I can check one thing off my list:

Mauve more cheesy than serious...

Mormon term for becoming a perfected being and being taken up to Heaven before the Second Coming, as happened to the denizens of the City of Enoch. It is not very likely to happen to me.
