The Secret Ingredient to Making Change Stick

Sometimes the instructions we get in life can be very simple, but not necessarily that easy to engage. There are so many books that come out year after year that we connect to, make us feel good for moments at a time, but for some reason, we just don't end up engaging in the practice the book is telling us about. What's the secret ingredient to making this change stick?

How Our Brains are Wired to Miss the Magic

Sometime early on in life I brain believes it has it all figured out. We know who our mom is, we know who our Dad is, our brothers and sisters if we have them, we have our friends figured out and we even have our beliefs about different cultures. These crystallize in our memory so each of these people becomes an object to be referenced in the present moment. This is called top-down processing and while it can be helpful in helping us react at hyper speed to the vast array of stimuli coming at us moment-to-moment, it also causes us to miss what is precious in daily life. Take this video for example:

Bipolar Supporter A Happy Ending

=>PLEASE FORWARD TO FRIENDS, FAMILY AND LOVED ONES <= Hi , How are you feeling today? I hope you're feeling fine. Let me ask you something: Do you like to read? Especially... Do you like to read mysteries? Well... This question would work for romances, too, I guess. So I'll go ahead and ask it: Are you guilty of this? Do you skip ahead to the ending of the book to see what happens? AHA! Well... If you do, you're not alone. Many other people do as well. I don't, but just because I like to keep guessing at how the story will turn out. But some people want to know. They don't like to guess. Like with bipolar disorder... It's hard for some supporters trying to deal with the day in and day out of coping with a loved one with bipolar disorder when they don't know how the "story" is going to turn out. Oh, of course, they want a happy ending to their story, everyone does. But sometimes it's hard to see that, what with the daily discouragements that sometimes come with the disorder. Sometimes your loved one can be going along fine... Even for a long period of time... And you even can become complacent... You start taking their recovery for granted... Then... BOOM! They're in another bipolar episode that seems to have come out of nowhere! And you wonder how that could have possibly happened. That's why I say in my courses/systems that you always have to stay vigilant, you can never take things for granted. You always have to be on the lookout for signs and symptoms of a bipolar episode: SUPPORTING AN ADULT WITH BIPOLAR DISORDER? Visit: http://www.bipolarsupporter.com/report11 SUPPORTING A CHILD/TEEN WITH BIPOLAR DISORDER? Visit: http://www.bipolarparenting.com HAVE BIPOLAR DISORDER? Visit: http://www.survivebipolar.net I even know of a case where a woman was stable for 12 years but then had another bipolar episode! 12 YEARS! Talk about coming out of nowhere! It definitely took both her and her husband by surprise. Especially because they had stopped being vigilant - they had long stopped watching for signs and symptoms of a bipolar episode. They had taken her stability for granted. They had even thought that she would never have another bipolar episode. But that's dangerous thinking. You must always be on the lookout for the next episode. You must always be prepared. But at the same time... You must never lose hope. You must always hope that your loved one will get better. Yes, there will be good days and bad days. But look... You don't have bipolar disorder... And you have good days and bad days. And just because you have bad days... Or even get depressed here and there... Doesn't mean that you're having a bipolar depressive episode, does it? So your loved one can, too. You can be prepared while still believing for a happy ending for both you and your loved one. Their bipolar disorder CAN be managed! What do you think? Monday Musing - Sunbeams

Originally published at Absentminded Author, v2.

Since this is a creative exercise, let's pretend it's actually Monday. Then let's pretend this isn't a picture of Earth. Describe the picture in a paragraph or two.

There we were, fifty years strong and finally making headway in terraforming Mars. Even Grandma's Black-eyed Susans could take hold in the brittle Martian soil and spring forth with life without help, though Grandpa said those things could grow anywhere. Then the idiots on Earth decided to "dial down" the sun to stave off Climate Change.

Nobody at the UN would listen to our cries for reason. No, they had a consensus. And so they nuked the sun.

Grandpa says that if the sun doesn't recover soon, all that will be left on Mars will be Grandma's Black-eyed Susans to mark our passing. But he said not to worry. The UN knew just what to do to fix things. They had a consensus.

MOORE: Examining options for the next UFC broadcast partner in the UK (Part One)

By: Dan Moore, MMATorch UK Contributor

MMATorchAvatar2011V2_180_24.jpg
Having just endured a frustrating two hours of watching UFC prelims on my tiny laptop, It got me thinking about who could potentially replace ESPN as the UFC's broadcast partner in the UK when their current deal ends this August. I've decided to break this article down into three parts, thus allowing me to break down the options, in detail, without boring you to death in one foul swoop like a Jake Shields fight.

This next TV deal is vital to the UFC, possibly equal in importance to the FOX deal over in the States. After all, FOX doesn't have to persuade the casual sports fan into watching a live event that often airs from 3 o'clock in the sodding morning! Over the three parts I'll cover all the main contenders including ESPN, Sky Sports, FX, BBC, ITV and even the mighty Channel 5, the spiritual home of Celebrity Big Brother!

ESPN - (1.2m potential viewers)

I might as well start with the current broadcasters ESPN, probably the biggest sports broadcasting network in the World. ESPN has only been broadcasting live sport in the UK since August 2009 after the demise of Setanta Sports, who ran into financial difficulty before ever truly establishing themselves. Setanta had been broadcasting UFC events, and almost by default, ESPN acquired the rights as part of the takeover. Since their launch they have continued to attract subscribers keen to watch live Premier League football. Football was obviously their main focus, but other sports, including MMA, continued to benefit from the increased viewership.

I generally enjoy their coverage of the UFC, they always show every event in High Definition, in addition to the standard format, and their logo isn't too outlandish to be obtrusive to my view (Step forward Primetime). ESPN like to keep it simple, and I for one like that. They very rarely have disruptions during the live broadcasts, wherever the event is taking place. They also don't try to over complicate things with additional 'In studio' analysis, relying completely on the UFC presentation. Another thing in their favour is money, they possess a bottomless pit of it and could easily out bid any other major players.

My gripe with them is their lack of consistency, and not knowing what non PPV events are going to be shown. Just when I thought things were improving, they recently decided not to broadcast the Ellenberger vs. Sanchez card. I am assuming they thought the viewing figures would be poor for a midweek event, and they would be right, but thats why god invented a record button. We should have been given the option, rather than have them decide for us, whatever the additional cost. I want to watch every FOX, FX and FUEL card available, and not just the ones involving Michael Bisping and other British fighters.

Another concern is the loss of the Ultimate Fighter show. FX showed the last TUF season and I am assuming they will broadcast the new series starting next month. Call me old fashioned but i'd like to see all of the UFC material shown on one single channel. If I want to know when Coronation Street is on I head to ITV, because I know it's there. Simple things in life are the best, well at least that's what my wife says to me!

ESPN is a market leader in America but it's nowhere near that level here, and 1.2 million subscribers doesn't cut the mustard, if the UFC wants to continue growing its UK fan base. Additionally, ESPN aren't on the best of terms with Zuffa right now after a recent TV report covered several controversial issues including low fighter pay, and the UFC's continued domination of MMA. As things stand the chances of ESPN extending their UFC contract are getting slimmer by the day, however, where there's a will, there's a way, and I doubt they will give it up without a fight.

MOORE: How to combat sleep deprivation watching UFC 144 - A UK fan's live thoughts during event in Japan

By: Dan Moore, MMATorch UK Contributor

UFC_144_poster_Japan_version_180_9.jpg
For every UK and European fan, watching a live UFC event can be a real challenge, albeit normally a fun one. Most cards don't start until the wee small hours of a Sunday morning, and by the time the main event comes around, the matchsticks are often in place to keep the eyes open. It's a real labour of love, with a certain level of commitment required, especially now that events seem to come around every other weekend. I currently live in Germany, and we are one hour ahead of London, and six hours ahead of the Eastern Time Zone. I thought i'd give you a quick, and largely uneventful, look at how I get through a standard UFC fight card, sat watching all by my lonesome.

9:00 PM

I have never suffered from insomnia, and I really need my beauty sleep. If it's not forthcoming during the night, i need a power snooze before and after a card; this is crucial to lasting the duration. I get a couple hours of sleep, eventually managing to wake myself up, followed by a quick shower. I'll neck down my first can of Red Bull, have a cup of tea, and load up the Playstation 3 ready for some pre fight action.

11:00 PM

I usually hand out a Call of Duty thrashing to a few cocky kids, geeks, or weirdo's online, but tonight, I am all over UFC Undisputed 3. I'm 11-2 with my London born lightweight fighter, going by the moniker 'British Express' (Lame!). After winning my first 11 fights, I was given a sound beating tonight by both Joe 'Daddy' Stevenson and Takanori Gomi. Maybe I shouldn't have made my fighter British, it's going to be a challenge trying to get near a title shot after those two dire performances.

01:30 AM

The first fight of the night is set to start on Facebook and Mike Goldberg is now tasked with keeping me awake for the next six hours or so (God help me). It's certainly not an ideal way to watch live fights, but it's better than missing it all completely, and I'll take it until a better alternative comes along. Hopefully the first 30 seconds of the fight between Zhang and Tamura are a sign of things to come later. Great performance and KO from Tamura, especially after agreeing to take the fight on short notice. Wow, great start and I'm wide awake; unfortunately for me, I have already lost my parlay bet for the evening. Not the best of starts from a personal stand point (0-1 in my predictions).

02:00 AM

ESPN UK used to show the same live prelim fights aired by Spike, but abruptly stopped it several months ago. Nothing to do with the UFC on FOX deal, they simply didn't want to waste extra money broadcasting unknown fighters. Please god let Sky Sports win the UK broadcasting contract this summer should they want it, because for now, I am reduced to watching the next four fights on UFC TV. I am sick of watching these fights on a tiny screen whilst my 46" HD TV remains unnecessarily switched off.

I had Mizugaki winning his fight with Cariaso, he wasn't robbed, but he did more than enough in my opinion. At least no one will be accusing the judges of being biased towards the home fighters (0-2). Enjoyable fight between Riki Fukuda and Steve Cantwell. Not sure why Fukuda took the fight to the ground mid way through the last round, especially when Cantwell was only ever going to win by submission. Some good boxing shown by Fukuda, with Cantwell often resembling a human statue (1-2).

First time in a while that i've not backed an English fighter, I haven't had much luck backing them recently, so this is a bit of reverse psychology on my part. Wow that certainly had me on my feet cheering, impressive performance by Vaughan Lee, and that win will mean the world to him. A defeat could have seen him get cut. Great to see Vaughan being very respectful in the interview and awesome to see the Japanese fans applaud it too (1-3 but i'll happily take that loss on the chin). Considering Gomi was a second or two away from tapping, his comeback in the second round was very impressive. Props to his corner for the instruction and props to Gomi for actually listening to them (1-4). Very enjoyable prelims, best in ages, and not one duff fight anywhere to be seen.

04:00 AM

Longest intro in UFC history, it was fully expected but it went on a bit. Despite hating metal music I do love that Stemm song and i'll never get bored of it. I have Pettis to win the first main card fight. WOW WOW WOW what a kick, I'm sure Joe Lauzon doesn't even know what country he's in right now. Pettis has another highlight for his already impressive reel. He's got to be the No 1 contender now, his performances, and the timing, make a title shot inevitable (2-4). Hioki needs to get some new intro music, that song was released in 1994, and it wasn't cool then! I fancy Palaszewski to upset the home crowd here Hioki didn't exactly cover himself in glory last time out against George Roop. Fight starts and instantly he looks like a million dollars. Does the travel really have that much of an affect on Japanese fighters? Surely Hioki is next in line for Jose Aldo later this year (2-5).

05:00 AM

Boetsch and Okami up next, and the latter is landing some crisp strikes, at least he took something away from the Anderson Silva fight last summer. Okami is comfortably winning this fight and it should be a comfortable decision win unless he gets a finish. Well forget that blimey, Boetsch must have ate some spinach, he's just landed some sick upper cuts to get the win over Okami. I never saw that coming, amazing comeback, awesome. Rogan sounds impressed which is a major understatement! It's well past my bedtime though and I am wide awake, that's the perfect sign of a quality fight card (2-6).

Jake Shields is up next, plenty of poor striking and leg humping on route to a unanimous decision win is almost guaranteed. Apart from Michael Bisping coming out to Blur, Akiyama's entrance is my favorite by a country mile, it's a shame he's not at his once elevated level. Decent fight and better than expected, not surprised that Shields got the win though. There would have been plenty of controversy had it gone Akiyama's, way especially seeing as Akiyama should have had a point deducted for holding on to the cage late in round three (3-6). Mark Hunt up next. Mark Hunt blasts Kongo, and then almost collapses the Octagon in celebration (3-7 so far, poor indeed).

Loving the entrances of Bader and Jackson, this should be a barn stormer early on. Not quite what I expected. Rampage had Plan A and Plan A failed within 60 seconds. Bader was tactically supreme tonight, he showed far more composure than in previous fights. There was only going to be one winner after Rampage failed to land a KO punch in the first couple of minutes. I'd like to see Bader and Davis fight next.

06:45 AM

Size wise this should be a comfortable evening for Benson Henderson. However, his opponent is Frankie Edgar and that guy would happily go to war against Alistair Overeem and put on a decent performance. This guy is amazing and has the heart of a lion. I am buzzing for this, so I hope it doesn't disappoint, sure it won't. Far too engrossed to type anything during the fight, what a fabulous end to the best six hours of UFC fights i've ever witnessed. Edgar, despite the facial injuries, was more than a match for Henderson. Most fighters would be unconscious after that up kick mid fight. I had Henderson winning it by the narrowest of margins but I would have had no problems seeing Edgar retain the belt. What a great fight. I'd like to see Henderson face Pettis next and Edgar drop to 145 to face Jose Aldo, both would be amazing FOTY candidates without a doubt.

08:00 AM

Right that's it folks. This report is far from being up to Jamie Penick or Rich Hansen standard, but that's my take on UFC Japan from a UK fan perspective, pure and simply the best UFC card I have ever witnessed either on TV or live in the arena. What a great night and what else would I do for weekend entertainment? I don't need to head to a bar to find the future Mrs M, I can't dance to save my life, and every movie at the local cinema is dubbed in German language. I honestly couldn't think of a better way to spend my Saturday night, and long may it continue, especially if every card is as good as UFC 144.

Yves Edwards injured, Jeremy Stephens in against Donald Cerrone at UFC on Fuel TV 3

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

UFC_on_Fuel_logo_160_6.jpeg
Yves Edwards has been forced out of a bout with Donald Cerrone at UFC on Fuel TV 3 this May, according to a report from MMAJunkie.com, and stepping into his place is Jeremy Stephens.

Though initially reported as an undisclosed injury, reports on Twitter state that Edwards may have a torn bicep, keeping him from this bout.

Stephens will return to action for the first time since September and his split decision loss to Anthony Pettis. For the third straight fight he'll take on a former WEC competitor in Cerrone, and he'll hope to pick up his fifth win in his last seven fights in the Octagon.

Cerrone hopes to bounce back himself after suffering a momentum killing loss to Nate Diaz in December. Prior to that decision defeat, Cerrone had rattled off four straight wins in 2011 in what was an impressive kick off to his UFC career.

UFC on Fuel TV 3 takes place on May 15 from the Patriot Center in Fairfax, Va., headlined by a featherweight bout between Dustin Poirier and "The Korean Zombie" Chan Sung Jung.

Penick's Analysis: This is one of the cases where an injury replacement actually improves upon the initial matchup. Edwards is a solid veteran and would have been a decent challenge for Cerrone, but Stephens is a bit further up the ladder in the lightweight division. Cerrone let emotions take over in his fight with Diaz, and needs to rebound with a big performance here. For Stephens, he needs to find a way to finish the fight as he hasn't had the best luck with the judges when his fights go the distance.

Bipolar: Money Doesnt Matter

=>PLEASE FORWARD TO FRIENDS, FAMILY AND LOVED ONES <= Hi , How are you feeling today? I hope you're feeling well. Have you ever heard the expression: "They were born with a silver spoon in their mouth." I'm not saying it's a very nice expression, but it means that someone was born into wealth... Or that they haven't had to work for what they've gotten in life... Or that things have come very easy to them. It's usually said by someone who is jealous of the person, that's why it's not a very nice expression. But there is a little bit of truth to it. There are some people who are wealthy... Who don't have to work very hard to get what they want in life. Then there are others who are the opposite. They have to work very hard to get what they want in life. It really should be that it doesn't matter whether you have money or not... It should be that your character itself is what gets you ahead in this world. Character should determine whether you succeed or fail... NOT money. So like with bipolar disorder. Money definitely does NOT determine whether you succeed or fail with the disorder, that's for sure! You can have all the money in the world and still fail at bipolar disorder. Or the recovery from it, I mean. What I'm saying is that bipolar disorder is no discriminator of people. It hits both the wealthy and the poor. It doesn't care whether you've got money or not. So you can have two people, one who's wealthy and one who's poor... And their money won't determine which one recovers and which one doesn't... Depending on which one WANTS to recover the most! I think that can really be the determining factor, if you ask me. Because there are certain things, like the things I talk about in my courses/systems, that your loved one can do to help them get stability with their bipolar disorder: SUPPORTING AN ADULT WITH BIPOLAR DISORDER? Visit: http://www.bipolarsupporter.com/report11 SUPPORTING A CHILD/TEEN WITH BIPOLAR DISORDER? Visit: http://www.bipolarparenting.com HAVE BIPOLAR DISORDER? Visit: http://www.survivebipolar.net You know... Like to get stability, they must take their medication every day... And see their doctor, psychiatrist, and therapist when they're supposed to. Then, once they get stability, there are certain things they can (and must) do to maintain their stability with their bipolar disorder. Like... Of course, they need to keep doing what it took to get stable to begin with, that's a given. But they also need to do other things, like: - Have a good, strong support system (that includes their medical and mental health professionals, but also friends and family members, coworkers if they work, community members, neighbors, pharmacist, clergy person, etc.). - Attend (and be involved with) a bipolar support group. - Be well-groomed and care about themselves and their appearance and general well-being. - Have a general routine that they stick to every day. - Have a reason to get out of bed every morning; i.e., have goals, both long-term and short-term that they want to meet. - Be productive and have things they want to accomplish (a To-Do List is good for this). - Work a job (usually part-time, or have a home business). - Have hobbies and do things they enjoy. - Exercise (at least 3 times a week). - Eat a nutritious well-balanced diet. - Stick to a good sleep schedule. They need to be well-grounded and well-balanced, physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually as well. What do you think? UFC 144 comeback: Boetsch pulls off miracle against Okami; Shields gets by ?Sexyama?

With some guts, power and toughness, Tim Boetsch turned a trip back down the middleweight ladder into an opportunity to legitimately call out top-five fighters at 185 pounds.

After getting schooled for two rounds in every aspect of the game, Boetsch landed some huge shots to finish Yushin Okami at the 0:54 mark of the third round at UFC 144 in Tokyo, Japan.

[Video: Boetsch outduels Okami with power and guts]

Boetsch got picked apart in the first by Okami's boxing. The Japanese veteran then turned to his vaunted ground-and-pound game in the second. Okami outlanded Boetsch 47-26 over the first two rounds. With Boetsch down 2-0 and his face busted up, the American had to go for broke.

He came out looking for the home run shot landing some effective kicks early before grabbing Okami's head and blasting him with an uppercut. Okami stumbled backward and took a deep breath, but Boetsch didn't allow him to collect himself. He followed Okami around the cage and landed another good combination. The completely stunned Okami was out on his feet. That's when Boetsch grabbed his head again and dug in deep to land three more uppercuts. Okami went down in a heap after the third and referee Leon Roberts had to jump in to save him.

"It still hasn't settled in yet. The first two rounds weren't good, but I won the third round and that's what counts. Yushin hit me harder than I expected, but I was standing at the end of his range so it was kind of my fault. I knew I had to move forward, but the upper cuts were a spur of the moment thing. Awesome night overall," said Boetsch.

After racing out to a 10-2 start with the UFC, Okami has now dropped two straight. Boetsch (15-4, 4-1 UFC) is a perfect 3-0 at middleweight.

Shields wins favor with the judges

There's no mistaking what Jake Shields wants to do. A jiu-jitsu ace, he efforts to get his opponent to the ground. He couldn't accomplish that against Yoshihiro Akiyama, so turned to Plan B and got the victory.

Shields (27-6-1, 2-2 UFC) landed lots of short strikes and many leg kicks to earn the nod from the judges, 30-27 on all three cards. He sealed the fight down the stretch by scoring three takedowns late. He also got Sexyama's back and threatened with a choke in the final 30 seconds.

Some onlookers thought Akiyama (13-5, 1-4 UFC) did enough to win. His volume wasn't high enough on the the feet, but he did score three awesome judo throws/trips. He was also successful in defending 9-of-11 takedowns. Unfortunately, that just doesn't score enough with judges. According to Compustrike, Shields outlanded Akiyama 120-58.

[Video: Late takedowns propel Shields over Akiyama]

This was Akiyama's debut at 170 pounds. The move paid off. He was certainly competitive with one of the top welterweights in the worlds. He looked strong at the weight and unlike his previous fights at middleweight, his energy remained pretty constant into the late stages of the fight.

Dana White discusses how MC Hammer made a case to bring Nate Marquardt back to Zuffa

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Nate_Marquardt_180_2.jpg
Nate Marquardt's signing with Strikeforce this week came as a slight surprise, as he's being brought back into the Zuffa fold less than a year after UFC President Dana White kicked him out of the UFC.

The signing came after a stint with BAMMA where Marquardt didn't even get a fight, and this week White talked about giving Marquardt another chance, and the influence musician and Alchemist MMA head MC Hammer had on Marquardt's return.

"Right after it happened, right after he was released from the UFC, MC Hammer is involved in his team," White explained in an interview with Ariel Helwani at MMAFighting.com. "He asked if we could meet; I met him in Los Angeles and he presented the case for Nate, and I said, 'Listen, I love you, but he's gonna have to go somewhere else, fight in other places and come back.' He opted to sit out and not fight anywhere else. He wants to fight in the UFC. So we're going to give him a shot in Strikeforce [and see what happens]."

Ultimately, it will be up to Marquardt to make the best of his time in Strikeforce, but the door to a potential UFC return has at the least been opened.

Penick's Analysis: Marquardt is one of the best fighters in the middleweight division, and he's likely going to be a top opponent at 170 lbs. as well. He's a valuable piece of the roster, but his exile from the UFC was for business reasons. They made an example out of him because he cost them money by being removed from a main event the day before the card. Time has healed some of the wounds, and Marquardt will have a chance to re-prove himself on the Strikeforce stage, with the hope of returning to the UFC down the line.

Symptoms of Codependency

The term codependency has been around for almost four decades. Although it originally applied to spouses of alcoholics, first called co-alcoholics, research revealed that the characteristics of codependents were much more prevalent in the general population than had been imagined. In fact, they found that if you were raised in a dysfunctional family or had an ill parent, it's likely that you're codependent.

UFC 144 preview: Edgar vs. Henderson leads super-sized PPV card in Japan

Speed kills, and the winner of Saturday's UFC lightweight title fight will master that saying.

In the past two years, champ Frankie Edgar has emerged as one of the fastest and most technically sound fighters in the 155-pound class. But he meets another bigger fighter in Benson Henderson, whose smooth striking-to-grappling transitions earned him a title shot.

In our official UFC 144 preview, MMAjunkie.com's Steven Marrocco breaks down that fight and the rest of the super-sized pay-per-view lineup.

Moleskine for the iPhone is Overly Complicated

A beautiful moleskine entry
Since I like jotting down notes on the go as opposed to just thinking of fantastic ideas that I later forget, I love checking out new note taking apps on the iPhone and iPad. I came across the Moleskine app a few months ago, but it languished in my "Prune" folder. I stick apps in there that I don't immediately connect with, but think that they might deserve a second, more in depth glance. Today I gave the Moleskine app a thorough look over.

It's very slick, even powerful. The GUI is clean and you can tell that the developers took time to release a polished app. There are lots of features. So many features. Maybe even too many features. I can label my thoughts, color them, give them nifty icons, geo tag them, and fiddle with the font size and color. I can even import photos, crop them, then resize them for insertion on the page. The words will actually wrap around the photo, which is a powerful word processor feature not found in most note taking apps. It's all very slick.

However, the app lacks the simple elegance of a Moleskine notebook. After all, what is a Moleskine notebook but a fancy collection of blank pages with a nice, hard cover, a cloth bookmark, and an inside pocket? This app comes across as too left brained and too corporate. It even prominently features a link to Moleskine's product catalog. That can be ignored, but overall, the Moleskine elements of the app are just visual embellishments. There's the slick opening graphic of a Moleskine cover, then you are presented with a list of notes. Creating a new note requires more tapping. Name it. Categorize it. Now what? Tap tap. Oh, we're finally in!

There are simply too many options in the way of writing. When I want to write in my real world Moleskine journal I grab it, flip it open to the last page, and start writing. There is no fiddling. This app makes me feel like an engineer laying out plans for a building before letting me in to write. It doesn't even open each note to the last page. You have to flip through to find it. No easy cloth bookmarks to mark your way. The text is not even searchable outside the app, so for me this is a deal breaker.

The notes are indeed pretty, but then you encounter the next limitation. How do you share them with people? Nevermind that the share feature is hidden away on a submenu, the sharing doesn't include the formatting. Sharing the note via email or even Facebook simply sends the text out into the world. If you had taken time to crop, resize, and layout a photo, wouldn't you want to share that effort as well? There is an entire culture of people on Flickr that do exactly this. They share their Moleskine pages down to the scribbles and side notes.

I feel that the iPad apps Bamboo and Penultimate do a better job of capturing the Moleskine spirit than the Moleskine app. Each notebook is visually represented, not given as a list, and they open to the last page you worked on. They even let you export the notebook as a PDF or graphic, preserving the look and design of your creation. Unlike the Moleskine app, you cannot type text, but the point is they are more Moleskine-like than the Moleskine.

The Moleskine app ends up being a lone, pretty island in a sea of note taking apps that I won't visit much. For what it does, you may enjoy it. You may like all that fiddly detail. It's certainly one of the slickest note taking apps I have used on the iPhone. A very powerful note taking app, indeed, but it's no Moleskine.

Update - 30 January 2012: The iPad version of this app is also very well put together. I may have done the app a disservice by describing it as slick. That comes across as overly glib. The presentation of the app is gorgeous, and even more so on the iPad. Moleskine is truly one of the most beautiful note taking apps out there. Unfortunately, the downsides I point out above are still a problem with the iPad version. The beauty of the app stops when you have to actually use it. Then Moleskine is too complex for such a simple task as taking notes, unless! you find such complexities desirable.
