UFC on Fox 2?s Three Stars: Oliveira, Johnson and Evans

The UFC's second foray into network television was not exactly thrilling. Some of the best moments happened during the Fuel broadcast, with the fights on Fox providing less-than-exciting action. Who stood out for you? Here are Cagewriter's Three Stars. Tell us yours in the comment section or on Facebook.

No. 1 star -- Charles Oliveira: In his first fight at featherweight, the Brazilian used a leg submission that caused every MMA writer on press row to say, "What was that?" We settled on a calf slicer, while Oliveira walked away with the Submission of the Night bonus.

No. 2 star -- Lavar Johnson: If you haven't watched Johnson's KO of Joey Beltran, go watch it. We'll wait. OK, now that you've watched him take out Beltran with huge uppercuts, you likely will agree with him taking home the Knockout of the Night bonus.

No. 3 star -- Rashad Evans: Put yourself in Evans' shoes. Though you're the No. 1 contender for the light heavyweight belt, injury and bad luck has forced you out of the actual title bout more than a year. Then, you're told you still have to win another fight to get that title shot. You could sulk about it, or you could use the five rounds provided to beat up and outwrestle Phil Davis. Evans chose the latter.

Violence Against Women

How many times in my career as a social work psychotherapist did I hear similar reports from female patients of being sexually molested by a family relation, such as a father, uncle, cousin or other family member? In one case, the incest with her father did not stop until she was a teenager. One of my first cases, many years ago, was of a family in which the husband stopped having sex with his wife and went to his young daughter's bedroom

Early estimates for UFC 142 higher than expected with 225,000 pay-per-view buys

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

UFC_142_Poster_180_10.jpg
UFC 142 was expected to bomb on pay-per-view. With it heading up against the NFL playoffs, including a monster game between the New England Patriots and Denver Broncos (with at-the-time media darling Tim Tebow) - not to mention it taking place in Brazil with an unproven draw in Featherweight Champ Jose Aldo - many felt it would be lucky to hit 175,000 buys. Projections were even significantly lower than that, especially when 30,000 fans were given free access to the card through Xbox Live.

Despite all of that, however, early estimates for the event have come in with a very respectable number, as Dave Meltzer reports in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that it drew 225,000 buys. That's the early estimate, and the range is wide with some numbers coming in much higher than that.

Ultimately, Meltzer expects the numbers to settle in slightly below October's UFC 136 event, which featured Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard III as well as Aldo's title defense over Kenny Florian.

Penick's Analysis: Though the number is still quite low compared to the numbers the UFC was drawing in 2010, this is still a very good number compared to expectations and considering everything that they were up against. I'm very surprised it came in this high, and that could be a good sign for the organization that it hasn't dropped its basement numbers below 200,000.

The old admonition that parents give to children is, "Don't do as I do, as I say." There is a problem with that old saying. The problem is that it doesn't work. The simple fact is that children learn mostly from what we do regardless of what we say. It's call "Role Modeling," and it's powerful.

Jim Miller back on track with choke victory over Melvin Guillard at UFC on FX 1

Fundamentals took out flash Friday night.

Melvin Guillard looked spectacular at times, but after three minutes of wowing the crowd, he was caught in another choke and had to tap to the very steady and tough Jim Miller.

Guillard, a dynamic striker, was lighting up Miller when he made a big mistake. He left his feet to attempt his fourth flying knee of the fight. Miller was waiting and dumped him to the ground where he eventually locked on a rear-naked choke to finish things at the 2:02 mark of the first round in the main event of the UFC on FX 1 card in Nashville.

"It always something I've been able to do and then from there it was just about securing the position," Miller told UFC play-by-play voice Jon Anik. "I'm pretty confident that I am the most dangerous lightweight in the world. I'm willing to make you guys believe that."

The dominant victory puts Miller (21-3, 10-2 UFC) right back in the middle of the UFC lightweight title hunt. A second straight loss Friday and he would've tumbled down the rankings. Miller lost badly his last time out against Ben Henderson. He revealed this week that he was battling some medical issues entering that fight. That's all in the past now.

Guillard's regarded as one of the most explosive fighters in any weight division. He came out on fire.

Just 35 seconds into the fight, Guillard dropped Miller. As Miller scrambled, he got drilled by six more hard punches. Miller clutched and grabbed to avoid more damage. He ate another big knee as the fighters separated. With 2:48 left, Miller absorbed another huge Guillard punch, right down the pipe, but he never wilted. When Guillard tried a fourth flying knee, Miller was ready.

The 28-year-old from New Jersey dumped Guillard on his back and 10 seconds later scored a momentary mount. Guillard did himself in when he flipped to his back in an attempt to free himself. Miller's jiu-jitsu is too nasty to attempt such an elementary escape. Miller jumped on Guillard's back as he tried to stand up and instantly sunk in his hooks. Guillard's suffered seven previous choke losses during his career. He wasn't getting out of this one.

A relieved Miller gave Guillard (29-10-2, 10-6 UFC) much credit following the fight.

"I don't get knocked down often and he knocked me down. He hits hard man. There are a lot of guys, I think in this weight class and the one above, that don't want to fight that kid," said Miller.

Henderson faces Edgar for the UFC lightweight title next month in Japan. Beyond that fight, it's anyone guess who'll get the next shot against the winner. Miller certainly put himself in the conversation.

Ultimate Fighter 13 winner Tony Ferguson meets Dennis Hallman at UFC on Fox 3 in May

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

After notching his third straight win to kick off his UFC career in December, Ultimate Fighter season 13 winner Tony Ferguson will return to action on May 5 in a bout with Dennis Hallman at UFC on Fox 3.

The UFC's Latin America Twitter account announced the bout, with the UFC's official Twitter account confirming the matchup.

Ferguson knocked out Ramsey Nijem in June to capture the title of Ultimate Fighter, then dropped to the lightweight division, where he has since stopped Aaron Riley and taken out Yves Edwards by decision in December.

Hallman dropped back to lightweight for his last bout, and made quick work of John Makdessi with a first round submission.

If Round 1 is the war of words, Phil Davis leads 10-8 over Rashad Evans

CHICAGO -- In most interviews Phil Davis comes off as a reserved young man. He's not out to ruffle any feathers, but those of us who've had a chance to speak to him repeatedly always knew there was a potential media darling behind that conservative facade.

In the lead-up to Saturday's UFC on Fox 2 card, Rashad Evans has brought out the beast in Davis and the former UFC light heavyweight hasn't reacted too well.

It started last week when Evans flipped out on Davis calling him a "boy." Yesterday during the UFC on Fox 2 prefight press conference, Evans shook his head, appeared annoyed and even looked flustered on several occasions.

[Related: UFC on Fox 2 carries huge implications for blockbuster fights]

As the banter began, Evans tried to play it cool.

"For the most part, I've got nothing against Phil, but you we've got a fight so I've got a lot against him right now. It's personal, but not really PERSONAL personal," said Evans, who had heated prefight words with previous opponents like Tito Ortiz and Quinton Jackson.

Evans got irked when the issue of college wrestling came up. Phil Davis, a more accomplished NCAA star at Penn State than Evans was at Michigan State, laughed when someone asked if his opponent could beat him in a straight wrestling match. Evans kept saying "your technique is trash."

Then Davis was asked about missing the opportunity to face Evans back in August in Philadelphia. Davis quickly pointed out that he didn't get to fight in front of his friends and family from nearby Harrisburg, Pa. Evans took issue with the fact that Davis didn't say he was sad to lose out on the opportunity to fight him. Davis fired back, "Nobody heard me say that!"

Evans snapped again when Davis explained his understanding of what the result of a win could be, a possible title shot against Jon Jones.

"The winner of this fight will fight for the title, but in the event that I hit him too hard and break my hand ... it might lead to somebody else getting the title shot first," said Davis.

"You don't punch nobody hard. Phil can't hit. Phil punches with his hands open and everything," Evans said. "He couldn't bust a grape. You look like Arsenio Hall."

Davis laughed.

"Give him a hand y'all. Give him a hand," said Davis.

That opened the door for a female fan to ask Davis whether he looked more like Hall or NBA star Dwight Howard? Davis handled it gracefully as he done throughout the lead-up to Saturday's tilt. We'll see if his poise remains intact in the fight. Either way, this week showed he'll be a valuable asset on main cards for years to come in the UFC.

UFC on Fox 2 postfight: Awards and Bisping earns respect from Sonnen, fans and his boss

CHICAGO -- Michael Bisping was the prefight villain of the night at the United Center, but with a hard-fought performance against Chael Sonnen, he converted an awful lot of haters.

Sonnen took a unanimous decision but it was far from easy. Don't believe it? The brash Sonnen had nothing but nice things to say about one of mixed martial arts' No. 1 heels.

"The whole fight I was never in a position tonight where I was comfortable, not one. It was 15 awkward minutes. I don't have a bad thing to say about the guy," said Sonnen,

Both fighters were surprised it was announced that Sonnen swept the scorecards and one judge, Clay Goodman scored it 30-27.

"There's no way on earth that was a 30-27 and that judge needs to have a serious thinking about his career," said a frustrated Bisping.

Bisping's resolve was strengthened by an outpouring of support on Twitter and the Internet. He's never been received very well by fans and MMA media.

"I think I won rounds one and two. In this modern day of social networking, you just gotta look at the internet, and the general consensus is that people think I won the fight," said Bisping.

UFC president Dana White was also a strong backer of Bisping's performance.

Seconds after the final bell, even Sonnen thought Bisping may have pulled the upset.

"I said to him 'what do you think?' He said 'I think I might have gotten the first two.' I said 'yeah I think you might be right,'" Sonnen said.

The winner was quick to point out that a 30-27 score can be deceiving.

"That doesn't mean I disagree with the judges. They were close rounds. You can have a 30-27 that's still a close 30-27. I don't know that that judge was out of his mind. If it had gone the other way I don't know that I would've been complaining."

It might be even more surprising for fans and MMA experts to hear Sonnen say Bisping could've won the fight in the first.

"I was surprised about everything. Michael Bisping hit me so hard in the first round, I didn't even know what day it was," Sonnen said. "I remember when I came to, I looked at him thinking 'oh my god, you have no idea how bad you hurt me or you'd step in and do something about it.'"

- The event at the United Center was a rousing success with a huge crowd of 17,425. Lower ticket prices were great move by the promotion which still hauled in a gate of $1.2 million.

- The UFC handed out postfight awards to Lavar Johnson for Knockout of the Night and Charles Oliveira for Submission of the Night. Nick Lentz and Evan Dunham got Fight of the Night honors. All four got $65,000.

Bisping continues to question Sonnen?s manhood over low testosterone

CHICAGO -- Maybe it's a good thing Michael Bisping and Chael Sonnen didn't have months to promote their fight tomorrow night on the UFC on Fox 2 at the United Center. One can only imagine the depths the trash talk would've sunk to.

Sonnen's testosterone replacement therapy is the popular subject this week for the Brit, who suggests that the American is less than a complete male. Early in the week on HDNet, Bisping alleged that Sonnen has a physical abnormality.

"[...] He's been submitted more times than I care to mention. Not to mention, the last time he lost a fight by submission, there were some issues involving performance enhancing drugs," Bisping said. "I don't know what the deal is. Apparently, he has one testicle. One testicle! This is why he uses performance enhancing drugs. He's gonna need more than one little ball to fight me next weekend!"

Sonnen served a one-year suspension for not properly disclosing that he was undergoing testosterone replacement therapy before his UFC 117 fight in California. Bisping is not a fan of fighter using TRT.

"If Sonnen needs TRT, then he's is the wrong sport. If you need TRT, then perhaps you should be carrying a purse and a handbag, and wearing a dress," Bisping told The Telegraph's Gareth A. Davies. "This is a fight sport, and Alpha males shouldn't need testosterone from anywhere else."

Strangely enough, that quote emerged from a conversation where Bisping discussed using a sports psychologist. That topic could certainly open the door for some counter-fire from Sonnen. Stay tuned, there's still 30-plus hours until the fight.

OCD and Reassurance

One of the most common manifestations of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is the need for reassurance. "Are you sure it is okay if I do this or that?" "Are you sure nobody got (or will get) hurt?" "Are you sure something bad won't happen?" "Are you sure, are you sure, are you sure?" While these questions are obvious appeals, they are not the only way that OCD sufferers seek reassurance. Indeed, the very nature of OCD centers around making certain that all is well.

Kamal Shalorus: ?I feel like a very sharp knife ready to slice through hot butter.?

Sonnen earns his rematch against Silva, grinds out win over Bisping at UFC on Fox 2

CHICAGO -- It was a rough 15 minutes, but Chael Sonnen did enough to get the fight he's coveted for 17 months.

The middleweight title contender locked up a shot against the UFC's 185-pound champ Anderson Silva with a surprisingly tough win over Michael Bisping.

In a fight, that appeared to be a toss-up for some, Sonnen took a unanimous decision, 30-27, 29-28 and 29-28, in the co-main event of the UFC on Fox 2 card at the United Center.

Sonnen's win sets up an intriguing scenario.

UFC president Dana White guaranteed the winner of tonight's tilt the next shot at Silva. The champ has been sidelined since August with shoulder and back issues and the promotion is pointing towards a summer return. But Silva recently hinted that he may be out beyond the summer.

Sonnen (27-11-1, 6-4 UFC) believes Silva is ducking him and has done everything he can to call out the champ. Tonight, he made the wise decision of not poking Silva. Instead, he delivered a hilarious postfight speech talking about his own greatness.

"As I've told everyone before, when you're the best fighter in the world, they don't call you champion, they call you Chael Sonnen," said Sonnen.

Sonnen was good, not great tonight, but much of that had to do with the opponent. Bisping (22-4, 10-0 UFC) rubs plenty of fans and media members the wrong way and, as a result, he's a bit underrated. The common thought was that the Brit would get eaten alive by Sonnen's Olympic-level wrestling, but that didn't happen in the first two rounds.

Sonnen scored two takedowns in the first, but Bisping got to his feet in less than 25 seconds on both occasions. He also stuffed two more takedown attempts. In the second, Sonnen scored a takedown with 2:58 left. Bisping was up a minute later and took minimal damage. The Brit was effective in the striking game, landing a few good combinations, but nothing appeared to rock the hard-charging American. Sonnen admitted during the postfight press conference that he was shaky on one occasion after a big shot from Bisping.

UFC color voice Joe Rogan was convinced Bisping had won the first two rounds. That wasn't the case on the judges' scorecard, but two of them did have things 19-19. Sonnen did what he needed to in the final round. He scored a big takedown and really dominated the position for over three minutes.

Sonnen scored that takedown just 12 seconds into the round. Bisping defended well for the next minute but got a little impatient as he was just about to rise to his feet. Bisping gave up his back standing and Sonnen squashed him. Then he did a brilliant job of getting both hooks in and rolling to dominant position on the ground. He worked to lock on a rear-naked, but it didn't happen. Bisping was protecting from the choke, lost his focus and allowed Sonnen to roll the position into the mount with 2:31 left. With 1:31 left, Bisping hip escaped to full guard. Bisping eventually got to his feet with less than 20 seconds left and scored a takedown of his own. He even landed a few big elbows, but it was too little, too late.

Bisping thought he won the first, but didn't flip out.

"That was a great fight. My hat goes off to Chael, he won the fight tonight. But, I really felt that I did enough in rounds one and two to secure the victory. He won the third, but I really felt that I was up on the judges' scorecards. They saw it differently and it is what it is," said Bisping.

Now the question is when will the fight everyone wants - Sonnen vs. Silva II - actually go down? Sonnen turned up the heat in recent weeks, plainly stating that he'll never get to face Silva because the champ won't accept the fight.

"I'm not going to fight Anderson either way. They can say whatever they want. Anderson is never going to do that fight," Sonnen told "The MMA Insiders" show on Las Vegas' ESPN1100/98.9 FM. "I hope he's healthy and has a good life, but I'm not buying into this mythical world that Anderson is going to some day sign a contract to fight me."

Silva beat Sonnen at UFC 117 via fifth-round submission, but that was after getting dominated for 23 minutes. He's had to hear about it ever since. This is a chance to shut Sonnen's mouth and likely do it in front of a record-sized crowd in Brazil. Why would he pass on the opportunity?

UFC on FOX 2 Morning After: FOX Fights Fail to Deliver

Filed under:

Rashad EvansCHICAGO -- There was some great action in the Octagon at the United Center on Saturday night. Unfortunately, all of it was over before the FOX show got started.

After a seven-fight preliminary card delivered one outstanding fight after another, the three-fight main card on the network was a disappointment. Between the three fights Fox broadcast on Saturday and the Junior dos Santos-Cain Velasquez fight in November (which was 59 minutes of talking surrounding one minute of fighting), there still hasn't been a really good UFC fight on network television yet.

That's a shame. If Fox had shown the Fight of the Night from Evan Dunham vs. Nik Lentz, or Lavar Johnson's knockout of Joey Beltran, or Charles Oliveira's brilliant submission, millions of Americans would have seen what the UFC at its best looks like. Instead, millions of Americans saw three mediocre battles.

The less said about Chris Weidman's decision win over Demian Maia, the better. That was simply not what anyone thinks of as a good MMA fight. Any curious newcomers to the UFC who turned the show on from the beginning probably changed the channel after the first round of that one.

Chael Sonnen's fight with Michael Bisping was better, and the pro-Sonnen crowd was energetic, but that fight wasn't much to look at, either: Sonnen showed how to use superior wrestling and clinch work to win a decision, but the new fans the UFC wants to draw on Fox probably didn't find that too entertaining, either.

And in the main event, Rashad Evans dominated Phil Davis for 25 minutes without ever coming close to finishing. If you know enough about MMA to appreciate that Davis is a very talented athlete, an NCAA champion wrestler and a rising star in the sport, you were probably impressed with how thoroughly Evans controlled him. But if you're new to MMA and had never seen Evans or Davis before, you probably figured at the end that you'd rather spend half an hour watching a Seinfeld rerun than watching a fight like that.

The UFC and FOX both say they're in this for the long haul, and that they plan to grow the sport together. That's good, because this is going to take time. The UFC and Spike got lucky when the first Ultimate Fighter Finale had a sensational battle between Forrest Griffin and Stephan Bonnar. So far, there's been no such luck for the UFC and FOX. Through four live, televised fights, the network television viewers haven't seen much action.

UFC on Fox 2 Notes
-- Charles Oliveira has a ton of talent, and he looked better than ever fighting at 145 pounds for the first time in the UFC. The 22-year-old Oliveira needed just 1 minute, 43 seconds to submit Eric Wisely with a calf slicer, and he could be a future featherweight title contender.

-- Mike Russow, a Chicago cop, got one of the best ovations I've ever heard before his fight with John-Olav Einemo. He also had one of the most surprising game plans I've ever seen when he repeatedly took Einemo down, even though Einemo is a world-class submission grappler. But it worked, as Russow stayed on top and out of trouble on the ground and won a decision. Russow isn't the prettiest fighter to watch, but he's 15-1 in his MMA career, including 4-0 in the Octagon. Think about this: If Alistair Overeem beats Junior dos Santos, Russow will have the longest winning streak in the UFC heavyweight division.

"I can't believe I'm 4-0 in the UFC right now," Russow said afterward. "It's unbelievable. To have this fight in my hometown of Chicago and to have the fans cheering for me like they did...I couldn't ask for anything better. "

-- Former Ultimate Fighter finalist Michael Johnson looked like he has improved both his striking and his submission defense since leaving Greg Jackson's gym and training full-time with the Blackzilians. The fans booed at times when Johnson clinched with Shane Roller and slowed down the pace of the fight, but it was good to see Johnson show some patience: In his last fight, against Paul Sass, he got a little too wild from the top and and was caught in a heel hook. This time Johnson fought safe and smart, and when Roller put him in a lot of trouble on the ground, Johnson kept his composure and got back to his feet. This was the best Johnson has looked.

UFC on Fox 2 Quotes
-- "This one sucks. You really hate to lose like this. I felt like I was doing alright and getting good back-and-forth with him. I felt like I had him, but I flat out got caught on this one."--Dustin Jacoby, following his third-round submission loss to Chris Carmozzi. Jacoby entered the UFC last year with a 6-0 record, but he's now 0-2 inside the Octagon and will probably be released.

-- "This win shows that the Strikeforce heavyweights belong here. We're all on the same level and now we're getting a chance to prove it. And the fans are the ones benefitting from it the most because they're getting to see action like this."--Lavar Johnson after his impressive first-round knockout of Joey Beltran. I'm not prepared to say the Strikeforce heavyweights are "all on the same level" as the UFC heavyweights, but I do think Johnson is a great addition from Strikeforce.

Good Call
Referee Rob Madrigal stopped the Lavar Johnson-Joey Beltran fight at exactly the right time, just as Beltran was falling to the ground after repeated uppercuts from Johnson. Referees have a tough job when a fighter is taking a lot of punishment but still standing, and Madrigal stepped in just as Beltran lost the ability to defend himself. The Chicago Tribune ran a story last week questioning whether Madrigal was qualified enough to be refereeing a major card like UFC on Fox 2, but Madrigal acquitted himself nicely.

Bad Call
Referee Herb Dean demonstrated exactly what I focused on with my last Morning After: MMA refs are too inconsistent with the way they handle punches to the back of the head. Shane Roller landed several punches to the back of Michael Johnson's head, and all Dean did was warn Roller while allowing him to maintain his dominant position -- no point deduction, no stand-up, no time out to see if Johnson had been hurt by any of Roller's strikes, and certainly no disqualification, as Mario Yamasaki gave Erick Silva two weeks ago for punches to the back of the head that weren't as flagrant. The UFC and the state athletic commissions need to work together to get every ref on the same page on this rule.

Stock Up
Chris Camozzi had lost his last two UFC fights and needed a win to save his spot on the UFC roster Saturday night. He got it in impressive fashion against Dustin Jacoby, controlling the stand-up in the first couple rounds and forcing Jacoby to tap to a standing guillotine choke in the third.

Stock Down
George Roop had an opportunity to show he's a player in the featherweight division, but he was violently knocked out by Cub Swanson. Roop was looking up at the replay on the United Center big screen as he was walking back to the locker room, and he didn't seem to know what hit him. Roop has lost three of his last four.

Fights I Want to See Next
Jon Jones vs. Rashad Evans and Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen. Watching Evans and Sonnen on Saturday night, it's awfully tough for me to envision either one of them winning their upcoming title fights. But both men have won enough big fights in their weight classes that they've earned No. 1 contender status. I'm looking forward to seeing both of them get their title shots, even though both of them are going to be huge underdogs.

UFC ON FOX 2 "EVANS VS. DAVIS" LIVE RESULTS: Pelkey's live round by round report of main card on Fox from Chicago

UFConFOX1_full.jpg
By: Matt Pelkey, MMATorch Columnist

Stay with us tonight as I'll have coverage of the three-fight main card on Fox featuring Chris Weidman vs. Demian Maia in a middleweight bout, Chael Sonnen taking on Michael "The Count" Bisping to determine the #1 contender for Anderson Silva's title, and, in the main event, "Sugar" Rashad Evans battling "Mr. Wonderful" Phil Davis in a five round fight with light-heavyweight title implications. MMATorch Editor-in-Chief Jamie Penick and columnists Rich Hansen and Shawn Ennis are live in the United Center in Chicago tonight, so keep an eye out for their unique live perspective in our post-fight coverage. The Fox fights start at 8p.m. (EST), so don't miss a minute of the action!

-The Fox open starts our proceedings. Kurt Menefee's voice narrates shots of the crowd as well as the arrivals of tonight's main event fighters in Rashad Evans and Phil Davis before we go to a (slightly over dramatic) video package hyping the show. It still feels like I'm about to watch football when they play the Fox music. We see Menefee's lovely mug and find out he's joined by UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture, and current light-heavyweight kingpin Jon "Bones" Jones hosting tonight's card. Bones gives a little breakdown of the main event. They discuss the late injury shake-up to the card, and Couture says Sonnen having to adjust to a markedly different opponent might be a problem. Jones says Weidman was already in great shape and was ready to step up and seize his opportunity. Time to pay the bills.

(Commercial Break)

Time to introduce and break down the first fight. Jon Jones thinks Chris Weidman can use his wrestling and submission defense to play top control and dominate a positional battle. I happen to agree. He also says he could use a Randy Couture strategy and try to win the clinch game and turn it ugly. Good stuff from the champ so far. Couture pimps the wrestling background as the best for MMA. Its a closed debate at this point.

FIGHT ONE: DEMIAN MAIA VS. CHRIS WEIDMAN (MIDDLEWEIGHT)

ROUND ONE:Herb Dean presiding. Both guys come out pawing jabs and looking to be aggressive, but nothing significant lands in the first two minutes. This might be one of those "bad kickboxing by two badass grapplers" kinda fights. Weidman lands a nice body kick. Weidman finally pushes forward with punches, gets a hold of Maia and gets a takedown. Two seconds later Maia is back up. No real grappling yet. End round one.

PELKEY'S SCORECARD: 10-9 Weidman. He landed more and was the aggressor on the feet. The takedown didn't mean much.

ROUND TWO: Weidman comes out looking for takedowns early. He gets one and moves into side control, but Maia is back up to his feet. Maia is losing this fight by being one dimensional on the feet. Weidman is mixing things up, landing his jab effectively, and is landing some solid body kicks. It hasn't been a star making performance so far by any means, but its been effective and encouraging. Weidman throws a head kick that's partially blocked with a little over a minute left. He shoots in and presses Maia against the cage. Maia lands a kick on the separation. Weidman gets another takedown with under thirty seconds left. Maia tries to get back to his feet and Weidman almost takes his back. That would've been a statement. Round over.

PELKEY'S SCORECARD: 10-9 Weidman. More of the same and he really turned it on with about a minute left in the round.

ROUND THREE: Maia gives up a takedown early, almost seemingly just to try something different. Weidman doesn't do any damage of note, but he still spent the time on top. Back to the feet and Weidman lands a nice two punch combo. Maia shoots in for a takedown of his own, but Weidman's sprawl is too good. With two minutes left the crowd voices its disapproval at the ever slowing pace of this fight. Both guys are throwing everything they have, but they're both exhausted. By and large its been that sloppy kick-boxing fight we feared. Joe Rogan gives the unusually negative opinion that neither guy is striking fear in the heart of the rest of the 185lb. division. Round over. Fight over.

PELKEY'S SCORECARD: 10-10. Nobody asserted themselves as better in that round. Lots of sloppy, slow strikes. Weidman had the takedown, but Maia probably landed just a hair more on the feet. Still should be Weidman's fight though.

WINNER: Chris Weidman by split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)

STAR RATING: (**-) Not a terrible fight by any means, but certainly sloppy and underwhelming based on the talent in the cage. Not the way the UFC wanted to kick off the second go-round on Fox.

RAMIFICATIONS: Maia is still a high level middleweight, but he won't ever sniff another title shot unless he starts ripping arms off in his next six fight. Weidman took the fight on short notice and beat a higher ranked opponent. He looked gassed later in the fight, but it was a good test to see where he's at. With a full training camp dedicated towards a specific opponent, I still think he's near the top ten. Seriously, where is Alan Belcher?

-A Chael Sonnen straight-outta-pro-wrasslin' promo sends us to a commercial break.

The "studio" guys break down the fight and its time to do the damn thing. Bruce Buffer time!

FIGHT TWO: CHAEL SONNEN VS. MICHAEL BISPING (MIDDLEWEIGHT)

ROUND ONE: Big John in charge. Sonnen charges forward immediately and gets the takedown. No surprise. Bisping getting right back to his feet is though. Sonnen keeps pressing forward. Nice trip takedown by Chael finds him in half guard. He postures up and starts his assault. Bisping finds enough space to get back to his feet, but Sonnen is still on him. Bisping drops down for a takedown, but Chael chuckles to himself and shrugs it off. Now Bisping presses his foe to the cage. They finally separate and Bisping misses with a spinning wheel kick. Sonnen brings it back to the cage. Bisping reverses and spends some time doing clinch work. Separated again and Bisping lands some punches. He misses another spinning kick, but looks like the aggressor as the round ends.

PELKEY'S SCORECARD: 10-9 Sonnen. Bisping really came on towards the end, but Sonnen controlled the grappling enough to edge it. Close round though.

ROUND TWO: Bisping comes out right where he left off confident and aggressive. He's landing jabs and crosses left and right. They clinch against the cage again, but its Bisping in the advantageous position, clearly winning the clinch war. Seriously, what is happening here. Sonnen finally gets a much needed takedown, but doesn't do much damage and finds himself back in a standing position before too long. More shots from Bisping. Sonnen looks battered and tired. Bisping tries the spinning kick yet again before the bell sounds.

PELKEY'S SCORECARD: 10-9 Bisping. That first round is gonna be key if this goes to a decision. Sonnen needs to win the third for sure though.

ROUND THREE: Realizing his predicament, Sonnen shoots for a power double early and gets the takedown. Bisping has been defending beautifully all fight, but Sonnen finally seems to be wearing on him. Sonnen works around and eventually takes the back. He looks for the rear naked, but Bisping defends. He rolls over and gives up mount. Sonnen can't do much with the position and Bisping recovers half guard. He finally works back to his feet and finally gets a takedown of his own on Sonnen as the fight ends. Yeesh this is gonna be close.

PELKEY'S SCORECARD: 10-9 Sonnen. As clear a round for him as the second was for Bisping. He finally showed off his superior grappling here. Its all about that first round.

WINNER: Chael Sonnen by unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28)

STAR RATING: (***) Not the classic I was hoping for, and not the dominant performance by either the UFC was hoping for to promote Anderson Silva's next fight, but a really good fight nonetheless. The 30-27 score was fishy to say the least as Bisping clearly took the second and had an argument for the first, but I agreed with the winner.

RAMIFICATIONS: Well Chael obviously moves on to the Anderson Silva fight now. He ignored Joe Rogan in the post fight and went right back to the pro wrestling schtick. He called himself the greatest fighter in the world. Um...not after that performance. Give Bisping tons of credit though. He just keeps getting better and better. Despite the loss on his ledger that might've been a career best performance. He validated himself as a top-5 middleweight in this fight. Before Chael came out in the final round and dominated with his wrestling, I was all ready to write about Michael Bisping's brilliant performance in pulling off a huge upset. As is, he shouldn't be more than two wins from being right back in this same position again.

A video package airs hyping the main event.

As if this show wasn't already destined to be labeled a disappointment, this just in: unless we get a finish to the main event, and this one seemed MOST likely to go to a decision in the first place, this show is gonna run long. Its not a huge deal because people should know by now that live sporting events don't always fit into the window of time they're allotted, but it ain't a positive either. We do get fighter entrances for the main event though. So we do have that going for us, which is nice. Jon Jones has the line of the night. When asked what the key to victory for Rashad Evans was, Jones replied, "Don't fight me". Such honesty from the champ.

FIGHT THREE: RASHAD EVANS VS. PHIL DAVIS (LIGHT-HEAVYWEIGHT)

ROUND ONE: Dean in charge again. Phil Davis looks fluid and comfortable on his feet early landing numerous kicks and avoiding the attacks of Evans. Davis stumbles into a takedown attempt which Rashad slowly but surely works his way out of. Davis keeps pressing forward with takedown attempts to no avail. They separate and Davis goes back to landing kicks. Rashad gets a takedown and lands in half guard. He passes to side control and gets a mounted crucifix. He lands some punches, but the round ends that way.

PELKEY'S SCORECARD 10-9 Evans. Davis looked good early, but Rashad closed strong and had both the most dominant position and did the most damage in the round.

ROUND TWO: Davis looks less fluid and less crisp in his stand-up to start round two, but it doesn't cost him in the first minute and a half. They clinch for a bit mid cage, but neither gains a real advantage. Rashad lands a couple punches and presses forward, getting Davis's back against the cage. They separate and Davis lands a body kick. Rashad is really starting to take over with his punches. He catches a Davis body kick and plants him on the mat. Rashad does a little damage from half guard and the round ends.

PELKEY'S SCORECARD: 10-9 Evans. Another good round for the veteran. He's controlling the action, getting timely takedowns, and doing damage from the top.

ROUND THREE: Davis shoots for a real, live takedown about a minute in and gets a hold of a single. He keeps working it for almost a full minute, never really completing the takedown, and eventually Rashad reverses and ends up on top. He takes Davis's back, but quickly they're back to the feet, clinched against the fence. Davis drops down desperately for a takedown, but Rashad just holds his head and delivers some big shots. Davis gets back up and catches Rashad off balance, finally scoring the takedown. He spends a little time on top, but can't do anything with it. Rashad works back to his feet before the rounds ends.

PELKEY'S SCORECARD: 10-9 Evans. Davis finally got the takedown, but couldn't do anything with it. The rest of the round was Evans in control, doing damage.

ROUND FOUR: I'd say Davis should just go balls to the wall trying for takedowns, but he hasn't shown the ability to take advantage of them when he's gotten them thus far. Barring something freaky, I don't see his path to victory here. Evans is winning the stand-up exchanges. He lands a stiff jab. Rashad gets a front headlock and presses Davis against the cage. Davis lands a couple nice knees from the clinch and they separate. Davis looks for a single leg, but Evans defends well. He ends up taking Davis' back in a scramble, but Davis stands up. Back to the cage. Rashad lands a big right hand with ten seconds left, but misses on his follow up flurry as the horn sounds.

PELKEY'S SCORECARD: 10-9 Evans. Rinse and repeat. The outcome of this fight seems inevitable.

ROUND FIVE: A minute in, Rashad catches a Phil Davis body kick and lends a right that drops Davis. Evans follows down looking to flurry to a finish but Davis survives. Evans keeps pouring on the punishment as Davis tries to work to a better position. With two minutes left, they're back to the feet. Rashad lands another big right that hurts Davis, and Davis drops down for another desperation takedown attempt. Rashad easily stuffs and they're back to the feet. Rashad tries to let his hands go to close strong, but neither guy can find the mark. Fight over.

WINNER: Rashad Evans by unanimous decision (50-45x3)

STAR RATING: (**) About as tedious of a performance as many worried, but Rashad impressed here. It wasn't exciting, but he was on another level as an MMA fighter tonight. His workrate was low as usual, but he displayed a well-rounded, complete game here.

RAMIFICATIONS: Well, everything is pretty cut and dry here. Rashad comes to MY hometown in April to finally get his hands on Jon Jones. Tonight will be seen as a disappointment in terms of fight quality, but it accomplished what the UFC needed in terms of pay-per-view business. It sets up two of the potentially three huge pay-per-view fights (with GSP-Diaz the other, provided Nick Diaz can topple Carlos Condit next week) in Rashad Evans-Jon Jones, and Chael Sonnen-Anderson Silva II. As for Phil Davis, he just wasn't ready for this fight. He's still a high-level prospect, but let tonight be proof that he's at least two years away from being ready for this opportunity again.

That's it for the fights. They send it back up to the "studio" for a quick wrap-up and the show ends over 20 minutes after the top of the hour.
