Data Is Gooooood!

The number of folks able to validate "best practices" with significant research data is startling...meaning it ain't many. There are a ton of "best practices, or different "brands" of therapy in use across the nation with no single method of proving on a grand scale how well they work. Maybe if they were tracked in an interoperable Electronic Health Record (EHR), and shared among professionals, a handful of these methods of treatment would have the data needed to prove their worth. The fact is, we're behind the curve in this.

Check out lots and lots of pictures from UFC 139

A once-in-a-lifetime night of fights deserves two galleries of fight pictures from Tracy Lee, wouldn't you say? First, look at the ups and downs that Dan Henderson, Mauricio Rua, Wanderlei Silva and Cung Le experienced over the course of their epic fights.

Now, look at pictures from the overlooked undercard, including Urijah Faber's win and Ryan Bader and Michael McDonald's knockout.

Bipolar Supporter Spring Cleaning in the Fall?

=>PLEASE FORWARD TO FRIENDS, FAMILY AND LOVED ONES <= Hi , How's it going today? Are you having a good day? I hope so. I remember when I still lived at home... And it was time for Spring Cleaning. I would do everything I could to NOT be at home! Because being at home meant I would have to help my mom with all kinds of extra cleaning. Closets... The garage... The basement... The rooms... Under everywhere... In everything... Places I never knew existed! And we'd find things I thought were long gone, too! It was amazing, the things Mom would discover during Spring Cleaning. I think everybody Spring Cleans. I think it's a universal thing, if you ask me. But I don't think it's limited to Spring. I think many people do it during the Fall as well. It doesn't really matter when you do it. The point is... If you let things build up... You eventually have to clean them up, however you do it. And whenever you choose to do it. There are people who are called hoarders. There's even a show on TV about them now. Have you seen it? It's really kind of sad. It can be a type of mental illness, if it gets real bad. These people don't just clutter... They just can't throw anything away. So they keep EVERYTHING! And this stuff just keeps building... And building... And building... Until eventually it just overwhelms the room they have it in... And actually even overwhelms the person themselves! That's when it gets really bad. See, you can actually have too much STUFF. And it can lead to anxiety. In my courses/systems, I talk about some of the other issues that can accompany bipolar disorder and what to do about them, and anxiety is one of them: SUPPORTING AN ADULT WITH BIPOLAR DISORDER? Visit: http://www.bipolarsupporter.com/report11 SUPPORTING A CHILD/TEEN WITH BIPOLAR DISORDER? Visit: http://www.bipolarparenting.com HAVE BIPOLAR DISORDER? Visit: http://www.survivebipolar.net Michele, who I've talked about before, who has bipolar disorder, went through something like this at one point. She had a dining room table which was where she just started accumulating things - like the mail, different pieces of paper, newspapers, magazines, etc. - things she meant to get to, to clean up, but never seemed to get to. Eventually, her piles took up the entire dining room table. Every time she would tell herself she was going to clean up the mess, she would look over at the table and become so overwhelmed, she would have an anxiety attack! Well, something had to be done about it. So she talked to her therapist about it, and her therapist told her not to try to tackle it all at once, because that was what was overwhelming her. She told her to take just one corner, just one pile, and start on that. Michele did that, and it worked! And one corner, one pile at a time, she eventually cleaned off that whole dining room table. And she never had that problem again. Are you a clutterer too? Is your loved one? Has it interfered with their bipolar disorder? How to Have More Intimacy - What's your Intimacy Index?

There's a lot of confusion about intimacy, what it really is, and how to make it happen. There are couples married decades who can be physically close, but don't know how to be emotionally intimate. The word intimate refers to your private and essential being. Usually people think it means sharing personal information or having sex. Real intimacy is far more.

Miguel Torres video: Can a smarter fighter be a player in the 135-pound title hunt?

Miguel Torres was as exciting as they came. His go-for-broke style helped him roll up a 37-1 record and move as high as No. 4 on the pound-for-pound list back in early 2009.

His banging style eventually cost him and he ran into a couple of knockout punches. Now he's re-worked his game to essentially become a points fighter. Do you like it? Torres does.

"I fought my last fight against Demetriuous Johnson, he got the decosion and he ended getting the title shot. So a fight against me can make or break somebody," Torres told Cagewriter. "and I understand. I want to go out there and be very aggressive, finishing fights, but I have to be careful also."

Working with Georges St-Pierre's trainer Firas Zihabi, Torres is now working behind his jab and scoring points. Sound familiar? Will this get Torres an eventual title shot? Standing with less fighters like Nick Pace could also get him caught.

Without explosive wins, Torres (40-4, 2-1 UFC) is now stuck in the middle of the pack from No. 5-15 at bantamweight. Will he get a rematch against Joe Benavidez next or should the UFC throw him someone like Brad Pickett, Scott Jorgensen or Renan Barao?

UFC all-timer: Henderson wins 25-minute classic against Rua at UFC 139

UFC all-timer: Henderson wins 25-minute classic against Rua at UFC 139

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Dan Henderson has put on some amazing shows over the years, but Saturday night may have been his best.

In a all-time classic fight, Henderson stumbled to the finish line, but he did so much heavy damage over the first three rounds that he earned a unanimous decision victory, 48-47 on all scorecards, over Mauricio "Shogun" Rua in the main event of UFC 139 at the HP Pavilion.

During the post-fight interview in the Octagon, UFC analyst Joe Rogan said the bout was one of the greatest MMA fights in history. UFC president said it was one of the top three fights he'd ever seen. It just might have been.

UFC all-timer: Henderson wins 25-minute classic against Rua at UFC 139"I hit him on hard. Cut him a few times. I should've had him finished there, but the gas tank got me. He stayed in there with a great heart like a champion should," Henderson, who was being held up by one of his cornerman, told Rogan.

Both fighters escaped terrible predicaments and landed shots that would've finish most opponents at light heavyweight. They both held on and survived in those situations.

It was a tale of two fights. Henderson (29-8, 6-3 UFC) had Rua in trouble in each of the first three rounds. His jackhammer right hands nearly closed Rua's left eye after just 15 minutes. Henderson outlanded Rua 106-66 over the first three.

"That guy can take an [expletive] punch. I hit him hard tonight. I tried to finish him the first three rounds," said Henderson.

UFC all-timer: Henderson wins 25-minute classic against Rua at UFC 139

That's when the championship rounds arrived. Earlier this year, the UFC decided to make all main events, title and non-title fights, five rounds.

Henderson, 41, spent so much energy trying to pound out Rua that he was exhausted in the fourth and fifth. Rua almost took him out in the fourth. Henderson stumbled around the cage over the final 90 seconds of the round with his hands down by his sides.

In the fifth, Rua scored a takedown with 4:25 left in the fight and Henderson never got back up. Rua mounted Henderson several times. He outlanded Henderson 84-19 down the stretch.

Cagewriter scored the final round 10-8 for Rua, but none of the judges did. If they had, their scores would have matched the 47-47 we had as the final outcome.

The fight opened on a blistering pace. Henderson dropped Rua with a punch just over two minutes in. That was the first sign of a cut next to Rua's left eye. He bounced back in the final 80 seconds by bouncing a right off the top of Henderson's head that dropped the old guy.

Henderson pressed the attack in the second. Both fighters landed good shots, but Henderson produced the heavier blows.

Rua (20-6, 4-4 UFC) came out for the third with his eye slowly closing. Henderson put together a brilliant inside leg kick-right hand combination that dropped Rua again with 3:23 left in the round. Henderson went ballistic with elbows and punches on top of the Brazilian. Rua rolled to his side to cover up and the fight was seconds away from being stopped by referee Josh Rosenthal. He didn't step in and it was absolutely the correct decision.

Rua actually mounted a bit of a comeback in the final 33 seconds as he hurt a weary Henderson with a nice combination. Henderson said afterwards he thought he'd jumped out to a safe lead.

"I knew I had the first three rounds easily. I thought I even had one of the rounds 10-8," said Henderson.

Both fighters came out for the fourth taking deep breaths. Rua scored two momentary takedowns and Henderson drove through a big double leg takedown of his own with 3:46 left. With just over two minutes left, Henderson actually dropped his hands from sheer exhaustion. That's when Rua landed his best punch of the fight, a brutal uppercut that put Henderson on rubber legs. The veteran was out on his feet, he stumbled backwards and ate several more big shots.

UFC all-timer: Henderson wins 25-minute classic against Rua at UFC 139

Rua could've pushed Henderson to the ground without much resistance, but he was simply too tired to press forward over the next 45 seconds. He scored a takedown with 36 seconds left, mounted Henderson and took his back, but ran out of time as he looked for a choke.

The fifth round was an absolute whitewash for Rua. He took Henderson down 35 seconds into the round, mounted him three times and attempted a total of 97 strikes.

According to FightMetric, Rua outlanded Henderson 79-8 in the final round. For the entire fight, Rua outlanded Henderson 191-113. He also made good on 5-of-10 takedowns.

"I was confident before the decision was announced. I would have been very surprised if that decision did not go my way. If I didn't think I had the fight won, I would have tried to get on my feet that last round. He did do a good job of staying on top. He tucked his head in nice," said Henderson.

Henderson said his next fight should be for the UFC title.
"I want the 205-pound title and think I should be next in line for a shot."

White said Henderson is a candidate for a title shot at both middleweight and light heavyweight. He won't force Henderson into one or the other. It'll be up to the fighter and what opportunity presents itself first.

Dan Miller?s family would like your help for son?s surgery

Dan Miller?s family would like your help for son?s surgeryUFC middleweight Dan Miller's son Danny was born with a kidney disease that requires the child to get daily kidney dialysis. He can have a normal life with a kidney transplant, but insurance won't pay for the entire surgery. This is where the MMA family has stepped in, and they could use your help.

AMA Fight Club in Whippany, NJ, will host a fundraising seminar on Dec. 3. Jim Miller, Danny's uncle, will lead the day. He'll be helped out by UFC fighters Dan, Charlie Brenneman and Andy Main. Their coach, Mike Constantino, will also lend a hand. The cost of the seminar ranges from $100-$175, with all proceeds going to the Daniel James Miller Foundation.

If you can't make it to Whippany, which is about 45 minutes outside of New York City, for the seminar, you can still make a donation. If you can, spare a few dollars to help the baby who Uncle Jim called "the toughest Miller."

Bonnar comes clean with Koscheck after UFC 139 win

Bonnar comes clean with Koscheck after UFC 139 winAfter winning a decision over Kyle Kingsbury at UFC 139, Stephan Bonnar was honest about a legal matter with a fellow fighter. After the win, he spoke with UFC commentator Joe Rogan and apologized toUFC welterweightJosh Koscheck.

"I have a little confession to make. I had this big plan to get this win, and then call out Koscheck. But you know what? Something about fighting makes you be honest with yourself. The truth is, he asked me not to make those shirts, and I did it anyway. So Koscheck, I apologize. You taught me a valuable lesson. From now on, fighters gotta approve of those shirts, and they'll get paid for every one of them."

Bonnar had a brewing feud with Koscheck. Though the two were castmates on the first season of "The Ultimate Fighter," they had recently fallen out when Bonnar's clothing company printed a parody t-shirt of Koscheck.

Based off the 1980s trading cards "Garbage Pail Kids," Bonnar's shirt depicted Koscheck as a Cabbage Patch Kid. The problem was that Bonnar didn't get permission from Koscheck to use his image. Koscheck sued, and Bonnar responded by challenging the much-smaller Koscheck to a fight.

"Words cannot describe how bad I want to kick Josh Koscheck's [expletive] right now," Bonnar said in June. "Sometimes I can't sleep at night because I'm up just thinking about all the things I want to do to him ? and kick his [expletive]."

But Bonnar has put those feelings behind him. Getting permission and paying fighters for their images is the right thing to do. It's just surprising to see Koscheck, who is usually considered a "bad guy" in MMA, teach that lesson to Bonnar, a beloved fighter.

Bellator looking to add fifth tournament to upcoming sixth season

As expected Bellator Fighting Championships chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney is actively working to eliminate the organization's non-title "super fights."

And as Rebney first told MMAjunkie.com this past month, the implementation of more tournaments could achieve that goal.

So far, Rebney said four tournaments are planned for Bellator's upcoming sixth season, and a fifth tourney could be added to the mix.

UFC Japan card in February rounded out with Tiequan Zhang vs. Leonard Garcia

The UFC's return to Japan this February is complete with the addition of a twelfth fight, as featherweights Tiequan Zhang and Leonard Garcia have been announced for the event.

"The Mongolian Wolf" will fight in Japan for the first time, and will look to bounce back from a loss in his last fight. The Chinese fighter has gone 2-2 under the Zuffa banner, with both losses coming in his last three fights. In his last bout, Zhang lost a decision to Darren Elkins at UFC 136 in October.

Garcia will hope to bounce back from back to back losses to Chan Sung Jung and Nam Phan in the UFC. The interesting part of those fights is that Garcia took disputed decisions over both of them for the only two wins in his last seven fights, with each fighter avenging what many felt was poor judging in both fights. Garcia is just 3-5-1 in his last nine fights, with all three wins coming by debatable split decision.

UFC 144 is headlined by the Lightweight Championship bout between Frankie Edgar and Ben Henderson, and will air live on pay-per-view in North America on Saturday, February 25.

Consumer Consent...Again

I know, I've belabored the "release of information" subject. It's good to know somebody else is thinking about this, and in a far-reaching way. SATVA, our industry's software vendors' association recently posted an interesting article on Behavioral Healthcare's magazine that lays out the importance of a "consent to disclose" form (I've called it a Release Of Information form or ROI) in the Electronic Health Record (EHR). Without a single, signed form in common, disclosure of the consumer's health information can't be shared without breaking at least one of 32 federal and state laws that protect consumers' confidentiality.

11 Ways To Embarrass Yourself. Just Add ADHD.

Nothing messes up routine like moving, and when I threw in the end of a long-standing relationship on top of it, my routine was in tatters and my ADHD was out of control. So much of my life was in disarray. But don't worry. At least I got an exchange.

One of the most important goals for me in setting up a new home was to eliminate old items from my previous marriage. Unless I had a strong emotional connection to that errant towel or kitchen utensil, I didn't want it around. It wasn't that they were tainted and evil; I just wanted to start fresh.

Starting fresh can be expensive.

For the first six weeks, the girls didn't use the shower in the bathroom attached to their room because we couldn't afford shower curtains for it. We shared the guest bathroom's shower. One night last month I finally had some money set aside for furnishings. I took them to Bed, Bath & Beyond to pick out their shower curtain.

They bickered over the same three curtains for one hour. I thought I was going to go mad.

When we finally made it home with shower curtains (and new bed sheets), it was late and my brain was fried from a very long day. Imagine how frustrated I was when I discovered only 11 shower rings came in the set of 12. ELEVEN! I was so irritated. My friend was waiting to go to a movie with me at that point, but I promised the girls I'd set up their shower.

My friend drove me back over there and I demanded an exchange for a new set. They asked me if I had miscounted. I took a deep breath to not bite their heads off. Miscounted? What do they take me for? An idiot? And so I got my exchange. We missed the movie, but I left that store with my head held high.

The next day I found the 12th ring attached to a bit of package on the kitchen counter under a towel by the KitchenAid Mixer.

The first thought I had was "Oh, no!". The second was "What the heck is this doing over here?", followed by "Who put this here!?" Then my last thought was "Oh. It was me." You see, the scissors were in the kitchen drawer, and I used them to snip open the package and free all "12"?except for the one on the underside that I left attached and under a towel for some reason.

The shame is that I forgot about it for three weeks until last weekend. It's a bit late to pop on over to the store and say "Oops!"

Embarrassing.

I'll probably call the store in the morning anyway, especially since my friends will read this blog and give me a hard time about it. Preventing this sort of ADHD faux pas is difficult. I was convinced that there were only 11 rings in the package. My mind boarded that train of thought in Boston and couldn't get off until Albuquerque. In the future I'll dig all over the apartment before assuming something is not included. That's what I would have done in my previous home.

It's funny how so many of my coping strategies have been turned on their ear in this move. I look forward to a stable routine in the near future. I certainly would like to avoid further humiliation at the BB&B.

Five fights that could still compete for ?Fight of the Year?

Five fights that could still compete for ?Fight of the Year?

In a week's span, MMA fans were treated to three memorable fights. Dan Henderson's decision win over Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, Michael Chandler's upset of Eddie Alvarez, and Benson Henderson's win over Clay Guida are all Fight of the Year contenders. However, the year isn't over. These five fights all have a shot at blowing the fight world's mind.

Eduardo Dantas vs. Alexis Vila at Bellator 59: Vila was seen as "just" an Olympic-medal winning wrestler until he knocked Joe Warren stiff in the quarterfinals of Bellator's bantamweight tournament. Dantas, nicknamed Dudu, made it through Ed West and after beating Wilson Reis with a flying knee. This fight has fun written all over it. Plus, Dantas is nicknamed Dudu.

Mark Hominick vs. Chan Sung Jung at UFC 140: The man who fought through a lump on his head the size of a small child is taking on "The Korean Zombie." Neither fighter knows how to quit. Add in that Hominick will be fighting close to home and that this will be his first fight since his longtime coach Shawn Tompkins passed away, and this will be a fight you won't want to miss.

Gilbert Melendez vs. Jorge Masvidal at Strikeforce: Melendez was hoping that he would get the next UFC lightweight title shot, but that was earned by Benson Henderson. Melendez will both want to take his anger out on being passed over, and show the UFC that he is worthy.

Donald Cerrone vs. Nate Diaz at UFC 141: When at lightweight, Nate Diaz's reach and grappling prowess usually give him an edge. Donald Cerrone's height, reach and jiu-jitsu can neutralize that advantage. Between the two fighters, they have 10 Fight of the Night bonuses. This bout has the chance to steal thunder from the headliner at UFC 141. Speaking of which ...

Brock Lesnar vs. Alistair Overeem at UFC 141: Heavyweight bouts can be hit or miss, but this one is destined to be a hit. Overeem is finally in the UFC and has been training with Xtreme Couture to shore up his wrestling game. Lesnar will be back for the first time since losing his heavyweight title. Both can throw punches with the power of a Mack truck.

What fights are you most looking forward to as the year closes out? Tell us in the comments or on Facebook.

UFC 143's Josh Koscheck a Nick Diaz fan into Super Bowl weekend event

Josh Koscheck's got a big fight on his hands on February 4, as he looks to knock Carlos Condit out of title contention at UFC 143. Considering he's only one fight removed from a dominating loss to Georges St-Pierre, a win won't get him another shot at GSP. In an interview with MMAWeekly.com, Koscheck says that those circumstances, among other things, have made him a Nick Diaz fan into the fight card on Super Bowl weekend:

"I like the Diaz kid. He brings something similar to what I bring to the table. He's not afraid to say what's on his mind... Realistically, I think GSP is a strategist and GSP is probably gonna come out with a great game plan. That's where he can play it safe and get the victory... I'd love to see Diaz win because when I beat Carlos Condit Feb. 4. That means me and Diaz is for a title shot. And that means it's a big fight because he talks really good, and I believe I can talk up the fight really good."

UFC on Fox draws 5.7 million, Bob Arum says MMA got ?buried?

UFC on Fox draws 5.7 million, Bob Arum says MMA got ?buried?

Even with the quick knockout at UFC on Fox 1, the event pulled in a very big audience for the promotion's debut on network television.

According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the show beat college football and produced an audience of near six million.

[...] preliminary ratings announced by Fox show the Ultimate Fighting Championship card on the network Saturday night was watched by 5.7 million people. A release issued by the network indicated the broadcast, the first for the UFC on network television, pulled a 4.3 rating in the 18-to-34 male demographic, better than any Saturday night college football game this season except the Alabama-Louisiana State game on Nov. 5.

Amongst local affiliates, no surprise here, Las Vegas did the biggest numbers:

KVVU-Fox 5 drew the highest rating of all Fox affiliates, according to the station.

It was a big night for fighting in general. The UFC's network TV debut was more than solid, while boxing's Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez fight was deemed a big success as well.

During the prefight, UFC president Dana White worked to shatter the image that the sports were in competition. Following the fight, boxing promoter Bob Arum was still in combative mode.

"They thought they would hurt us. Instead they got hurt because they got buried. But I think the fact they're just on for an hour helps us," Arum told the N.Y. Post.

Arum said boxing's momentum isn't about just one fight. His next big tilt comes in three weeks with the Miguel Cotto-Antonio Margarito rematch in New York on Dec. 3.

"We had so many companies soliciting us wanting to be sponsors not just for a fight, but a series of fights," Arum said. "We've had to greatly increase our staff and personnel. Our [Las Vegas] offices are now too small, and we're in the process of buying our own building, so we can expand and handle the people we have."

Can boxing and MMA both benefit from the attention it got this weekend or can only one prosper?

Michael Bisping planning on sending Jason "Mayhem" MIller to the hospital at TUF 14 Finale

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

BispingMichael_180.jpg
Michael Bisping has made his feelings on Jason "Mayhem" Miller clear throughout the last several months, and as their coaches fight at The Ultimate Fighter 14 approaches, he hasn't softened his stance.

"I'll be honest the way I feel about it, I could have laid on my couch for six months eating pizza and got off my ass and kicked the (expletive) out of him," Bisping said in an interview with MMAWeekly.com. "Unfortunately for him, I've just done a 10-week training camp as if I was facing Anderson Silva. This guy's got nothing on me. I'm looking forward to proving it."

Bisping took the fight in order to be a part of The Ultimate Fighter again, and to get the added hype and exposure that came along with taking part in the series that launched his UFC career. But it's not the fight he was looking for initially, and he doesn't think a win over Miller is necessarily going to get him to a title fight.

"Far be it from me to question the UFC, that's not what I'm about and I don't do that," he said. "They tell me who I'm fighting and I fight and try to win. I want to fight for the title soon. I thought my next opponent after I beat Jorge Rivera, I thought my next opponent I want a big name, I want to be them, and I want to win and get a title shot."

"Obviously, The Ultimate Fighter came around and that threw a little spatter into the works. One, I ended up having a lot of time off, and two, I'm fighting Jason Miller. Is he the guy by beating him to get a title shot? No, I don't think so. He's a veteran, he's been around the sport, all the rest of it, but he's not in the top ten and I don't think he's going to be."

Bisping thinks he's still being overlooked and underrated, and because he doesn't think Miller is taking him as seriously as an opponent, he believes he's going to deliver a lot of punishment to "Mayhem."

"He's underestimating me, just like all opponents, the same run of events, the same things get said in every fight," Bisping opined. "'Oh Bisping he's not good at this, he's not good at that' and they have a different opinion by the time they're checking out of the hospital after the fight. Six of my last seven opponents, that's where they went to the hospital, and Jason Miller's going to be no different.

"I hope he hasn't booked an after party for after the fight cause if he does, he's going to be spending it with a couple of nurses. I saw an interview he did recently where he said he's going to knock me out and submit me in the first round. I've got to say I did laugh quite heartily when I read that. That's what I said on the show when he said ?I'm going to knock you out', I said when have you knocked anyone out? When's the last time I got submitted? Never. I'm looking forward to kicking his ass, can't wait."

Penick's Analysis: Bisping needs this to be a statement fight. He desperately wants to get to a title shot in the middleweight division, but with a number of fighters in front of him he still hasn't gotten a statement win to stake his claim. If he somehow stopped Miller, who hasn't been stopped in five years, that would be a big statement, and be the best way to move himself up the line in the division. Regardless, he needs to win, and if he doesn't it will make for a major setback, and may derail any hope he has of getting to a title fight in his UFC career. Also, with how heavily he's talking up his chances in this fight, losing would be a massive failure on his part.

Georges St-Pierre not bothered by Nick Diaz's trash talk into UFC 143 showdown in February

Though it was mostly trash talk that managed to goad Georges St-Pierre into wanting a fight with Nick Diaz this February, the UFC Welterweight Champion now says the talk itself doesn't concern him, and isn't going to affect his performance against Diaz at UFC 143. In an interview with QMI Agency (via ESPN UK), St-Pierre explained:

"I've seen it all from everyone before. If they're trying to get into my head and make me fight a bad fight, it's just mind games and it doesn't work. I don't even understand [or] speak English very well. I don't understand most of the things that [Diaz] says when he trash talks. I don't really care. I'm just going to focus on hurting him."

"Kid" Yamamoto gets one more UFC bout, meets Vaughan Lee at UFC Japan "Edgar vs. Henderson"

Norifumi "Kid" Yamamoto has lost both of his fights in the UFC this year, and has won only one fight in his last five, but the UFC is booking him for at least one more fight, adding him to the UFC Japan fight card on February 26.

The organization announced during a press conference for the event in Japan that Yamamoto will face Vaughan Lee on the card.

Yamamoto debuted in the UFC in February, losing a decision to Demetrious "Mighty Mouse" Johnson. He then took on Darren Uyenoyama on the undercard of the UFC's debut on Fox, again losing by decision.

British bantamweight Vaughan Lee made his UFC debut at UFC 138 earlier this month, losing a split decision to Chris Cariaso.

Fedor Emelianenko returns with win, visit from Vladimir Putin

Fedor Emelianenko stopped his losing streakwith a decision win over Jeff Monson at M-1 in Moscow over the weekend. This was his first win since losing to Fabricio Werdum last summer, then dropping bouts to Antonio Silva and Dan Henderson. Then, he was treated to a post-fight speech by Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.

My Russian is fuzzy, but that roughly translates to, "WOOOOO FEDOR!" Actually, according to the Washington Post, Putin called Emelianenko a real Russian knight with character and good muscles.

The crazy part of this is that Putin attended the fights, continuing his streak of being cooler than everyone. He has his own cheerleaders, goes horseback riding, races cars, has wrestled a bear, and then shows up at M-1 bouts and makes a speech. All in a day's work for Vladdy.

This was a much-needed win for Emelianenko, who spoke of retirement after losing to Werdum. He used kickboxing skills to batter Monson for three rounds, and dropped him three times. As seen in the video, a bloodied Monson had to be helped from the ring.

HYDEN BLOG: Why Dana White is Wrong About UFC on Fox 1

Staff08Hyden_Main_10.jpg
By: Frank Hyden, MMATorch contributor

Dana White recently said that he wouldn't change a thing about the way the UFC on Fox 1 played out. He even said that, if he had a time machine, he wouldn't have switched Henderson vs. Rua into the UFC on Fox 1 main event. He said that people weren't ready for that. He said that Junior dos Santos knocking out Cain Velasquez in 64 seconds, bracketed by 20-some minutes of talking on either side of the fight, was ideal for new viewers.

He then went on to say that we're all living in this MMA bubble and we have no idea what's going on behind the scenes. He said he doesn't care about what the hardcore MMA fans think. That's about the dumbest thing I've ever heard him say, and definitely up there with other heads of sports leagues.

The hardcore fans of any sport are the bread and butter. Do you think Roger Goodell and other NFL suits give a crap about fantasy football? The answer is absolutely not. However, fantasy football is at the root of why the NFL is as popular as it is. For that reason, the NFL embraces fantasy football and does everything they can to ingratiate themselves to those who play.

Casual fans, the same kind the UFC is courting now, will come and go. You get what you can out of them, and do your best to make them want to spend as much money as possible. However, you also have to make absolute certain that you do not distance yourself from the hardcore fans. That includes not talking out of your ass and insulting them. Without hardcore fans no sport will exist for long. The NHL is still around only because of hardcore hockey fans. It certainly isn't because of a bunch of casual fans who probably can't even name more than two current NHL players.

Over time you can turn casual fans into hardcore fans, and I suspect that's what Dana is trying to do. He's going about it backwards, though. You don't court casual fans at the expense of hardcore fans.

The very notion that you have to "ease" casual fans into MMA at a snails pace is ridiculous. This is 2011, not 1970. Dana's insulting the very same casual fans he's trying to woo so much. Are we supposed to believe that casual fans or non-fans aren't capable of enjoying a good fight? To suggest that FOX viewers aren't "ready" to see a fight like Henderson vs. Rua because they don't know enough about the sport is so infinitely insulting that you would be surprised that the head of the UFC would say it.

That's like saying a casual football fan can't comprehend or enjoy a Ravens vs. Steelers game just because it ends 17-13. We would be having a different discussion if the Henderson vs. Rua fight was a bad fight, or one that was all about submission offense/defense. Then I could understand a little more saying that casual fans might not be able to fully appreciate what's going on. I still think that it would be upon the announcers to help the viewers understand and appreciate what's happening, though.

The thing Dana said that was the biggest misstep was the comment about not caring what hardcore fans think. Even if he thinks that, you don't say it. You can have 100 million casual fans, but they will all leave eventually. Likely reasons being that something new and fresh has their attention or a program they normally watch is on at the same time. Casual fans don't buy pay-per-views, at least not at the rate that hardcore fans do. You can try to convert them into hardcore fans, but then you're stuck with the same dilemma of not caring what they think, and you have to go out and get more casual fans.

The UFC thrives on PPV, which is mainly the domain of the hardcore fan. It is possible to cater to the hardcore fans while at the same time make casual fans feel welcome. That's because MMA isn't some brand new, revolutionary sport that no one knows anything about. It's not hard to follow MMA, you may not get all the nuances involved, but you can still enjoy the sport.

*************

The other major thing that Dana White has said recently that is totally off-base was when he said that The Ultimate Fighter show would double its ratings when it moves to FX. He said they'll get 3 million people watching, largely because of the live fights and the format changes. They may initially draw a number close to that, but it won't last. Having one live fight a week isn't going to change anything. Some of the fights on TUF have been among the most boring fights you'll ever see in the UFC. Also, people won't know who the fighters are. TUF is like the farm system for the UFC, and if you're good enough you're already fighting in the UFC. How many people watch the NBDL? There's not a ton of people scrambling to go watch the practice squad for a NFL team.

The Ultimate Fighter has grown stale, but that doesn't mean it's a bad show. It's important to have a feeder system. It being televised is a good thing, and the show draws decent ratings as is. I understand the desire to tinker with things in an effort to boost ratings, but unless they're going to load the shows with fighters people want to see, it's probably not going to happen.

When Dana says things like TUF will double its ratings, he loses credibility. This is actually essentially the same thing that Hulk Hogan said when he came to TNA Wrestling, that they would double their ratings. That hasn't happened. Ask yourself this, when Hulk Hogan says something, do you believe him? Dana White doesn't want to be like Hulk Hogan when it comes to credibility. It's nice to shoot for the stars, but when you promise something that doesn't happen, you end up being the boy who cried wolf.

QUOTABLES: Dana White compares epic UFC 139 Henderson-Rua bout to Bonnar-Griffin 1

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

"Bonnar-Griffin was three rounds between two guys who were trying to get into the UFC. Bonnar-Griffin is an amazing fight and an important fight for us at that point in time to get into the UFC. That fight I think for the mainstream people that tuned in for the first time on Spike, there was a lot of stand-up and back and forth and display of heart and will and then both guys get the contract? If this was the WWE, we couldn't have scripted that thing better than the way that it went for us that night.

But when you look at the level that (Henderson and Shogun) are at and the big fights that these two have had, and what was on the line, and going five rounds, and the way this fight went. It was one of the sickest fights I've ever seen."

-Dana White compares UFC 139's epic Dan Henderson vs. Mauricio "Shogun" Rua bout with the Ultimate Fighter Finale bout between Forrest Griffin and Stephan Bonnar that the UFC has held as their "top fight of all time" (via MMAWeekly.com).

Penick's Analysis: Bonnar-Griffin I was huge for the UFC because it literally was a game-changer for the organization. That fight was a brawl, and it was hugely entertaining, bringing in more viewers the longer it went on and instantly converting new fans to the sport. But Henderson-Rua was at a higher level than that fight, with two longtime top fighters still vying for contention and featuring even more drama in a five round fight. It really will go down as one of the best fights in UFC history.
