?The Reem? video series returns: Overeem and UFC hooked up for the fans
The Reem is ready to wreak havoc permanently in America.
With Alistair Overeem signed by the UFC, anticipation is building for his Dec. 30 fight against Brock Lesnar at UFC 141.
The latest edition of "The Reem" documentary takes us through the fighter's visit to the U.S., and the Las Vegas offices of the UFC.
He stops first in Los Angeles to scout gyms where he meets up with an old friend in former UFC heavyweight Antoni Hardonk. Then it's on to Sin City to meet with UFC owner Lorenzo Fertitta and sign his contract.
Overeem is jacked to be amongst the best big men in the world.
"The UFC is regarded as the No. 1 organization. That's my drive. I love challenges," said Overeem (9:55 mark).
The rabid MMA fanbase was also a factor in Overeem giving up K-1 to fight exclusively for the UFC.
"I have so many fans asking me when are you going to the UFC? It's time for you to go there. So that was a factor," Overeem said. "When I think of the possible dream match ups and the whole thing that comes with it, I'm just very excited."
Fertitta agreed that fans were vocal about seeing Overeem in the organization.
"From the UFC's standpoint, one of the goals we have is that we wanna put together the biggest fights that we can for the fans. And I think when you look at Alistair, he's obviously one of the best heavyweights in the world and the fans are demanding it. They want to see Alistair fight the best guys," said Fertitta (12:00 mark).
The clash between the massive Brock Lesnar and the imposing striker could be one for the ages.
"The fight with me and Brock, that just all excites me. He's a big guy, I'm a big guy," Overeem said (13:30 mark). "He brings it, I bring it. That fight will not go the distance."

Chael Sonnen on UFC Champ Anderson Silva - "Whether I like to admit it or not, he's done a better job than anybody"
"He ducked Yushin Okami for years, but then he went in there and he made it look easy," Sonnen said during a media conference call for UFC 136 on Friday. "If you'd ask me to concede that Anderson Silva is better than me, never. I'd refer you to the tape."
"But the fact of the matter, whether I like to admit it or not, is he's done a better job than anybody, he's done a better job than me, and he's the champion. That's not going to stop me from sticking my finger in his chest, but at some point fairness has to kick in, and you have to look at what he's done, and tip your hat to him."

Jon Jones Talks Not Letting Steven Seagal Into His Dressing Room
MMANEWS.COM Staff Writer<Br><Br>
Prior to his Light Heavyweight Title defense this past weekend at UFC 135, Jon Jones received a phone call from B-lister Steven Seagal, who teaches all sorts of crazy tricks to Team Black House, requesting time with the Champ to give him a few pointers before the fight with Quinton Jackson.<Br><Br>
Jones, who felt Seagal was a little strange, explained the encounter to <a href=http://www.jimrome.com/junglehighlights?uri=channels/465575/1494957>Jim Rome</a>:<br><Br>
"You never know what people's motives are, especially with a guy who coaches Lyoto Machida. Machida is definitely someone I want to fight in my near future and I just didn't want to share my psychology with him or anything that would put me at a disadvantage in the future.<br><Br>
"It was just confusing, really, to bring in someone you don't work with at all to give you last second advice, it can actually be more detrimental than helpful.<br><Br>
"I don't know how he got my number. He was like 'Hey listen, I think you're gonna win the fight, and when I predict someone's gonna win I'm never wrong and there's some things I wanna go over with you.' It was all very strange.<br><Br>
"I don't wanna bad mouth him too bad, he had good intentions, I think. But yeah, I definitely wasn't having Steven Seagal in my corner. I could see if it was Jet Li or something, Jet Li would be pretty cool. I would definitely take that call, for sure."<br><Br>

UFC 139 Bout a Dream Come True for Cung Le, but Last Stand for Wanderlei Silva
Filed under: UFC
"I actually learned my lesson the first time when I came back against Scott Smith," Le said. "I wasn't very busy training when I was on the movie set. I was just more focused on getting into character."
He started off well enough against Smith in their first meeting in December of 2009. But his lack of training caught up to him in the final round, and Smith came out of nowhere to score the upset via knockout of a fading, winded Le.
When they signed on to face each other in a rematch some seven months later, he had every opportunity to make the same mistake. Fortunately for Le, experience -- particularly the painful kind - is an excellent teacher.
"I was doing some film work, [but] I made sure I trained every day and I stayed in shape," he said, adding that this time around, as he prepares to face Wanderlei Silva at UFC 139 in San Jose, Calif., he's been in the gym since February.
"I am focused on this fight, so right now it's all about being an MMA fighter," said Le.
For Silva, who stepped in as a replacement for the injured Vitor Belfort, the stakes are even higher. UFC president Dana White has made it clear that he thinks Silva might need to hang up the gloves after his knockout loss to Chris Leben at UFC 132, and this could be the Brazilian's last chance to prove to his boss that he still has some fight left in him.
"I love fighting. I love the sport. I grew up inside the ring, inside the Octagon. I want to fight as long as I can," Silva told reporters.
When asked if he felt that his back was against the wall in the fight with Le, he didn't argue. "Some guys fight better in that position. I'm thinking I am one of [those] guys," he said.
Le, a decorated Sanshou kickboxer who turned to MMA relatively late in life and fought the entirety of his four-year career in Strikeforce up until this point, said he specifically sought out a deal with the UFC because he wanted to fight in the Octagon, and not simply because he wanted to be on this card in his adopted hometown of San Jose.
"It really means a lot," he said. "I've fought on many platforms, different styles, but being a UFC fighter now, being the co-main event, definitely is a dream come true. Just earlier this morning I was looking at the picture where I was at the refugee camp, and now being in the co-main event of the UFC, it's a dream come true. I'm very excited and I'm going to be ready to rock and roll and give the fans what they want to see."

TFC 20: Varner and Rogers lose, Whitney scores dynamite flying knee KO
Jamie Varner and Brett Rogers must've thought a few fights in the minor leagues would be fine on their way back to the bigs. That's not the way it's working out for the former WEC and Strikeforce stars. Both Varner and Rogers lost last night at Titan Fighting Championship 19.
Varner looked sluggish throughout his fight against Dakota Cochrane. He leaned too heavily on his takedown game and couldn't control Cochrane on the ground. Cochrane (11-1) was the much better fighter on the feet taking a unanimous decision, 30-27 on all three cards.
Varner, the former WEC lighweight champ, is now 1-4-1 in his last six. He's only 26, but has battle hand problems and other injuries for the last few years. Before the fight, Varner talked about his goals of a Zuffa return.
"I literally just took some time away from actual competition," Varner told the Kansas City Star. "I was still training and working out often. I took some fights last year that might have been (after) a little too quick of a turnaround. I needed my body to fully heal. I also took some college classes so I can have different opportunities in a few years down the road after my MMA career. For now I am 100 percent committed to MMA and getting to the UFC."
MMAjunkie says Varner was hinting at retirement on Twitter after the fight. It appears he deleted the tweet. Cochrane was a late replacement on this card. His victory shows just how sick the depth is around the country in all weight classes.
Rogers (11-4) was facing a better known entity in former UFC fighter Eddie Sanchez and result was the same. Rogers was a top-rated heavyweight for Strikeforce and even gave Fedor Emelianenko a run for his money during their 2009 fight.
Against Sanchez, he looked tentative and exhibited little growth in his game. Rogers never put his punches together and appeared unable to check a kick. Sanchez beat up his lead leg for 15 minutes. Sanchez took a split decision, 30-27, 28-29 and 30-27, from Rogers, who's now lost 4-of-5.
The best moment of the night came fromn Andrew Whitney. He and Laramie Shaffer engaged in a slugfest for two-plus rounds, but that all changed when Whitney delivered a picture perfect flying knee.

Bellator 51: Warren Starched In 64 Seconds
MMANEWS.COM Staff Writer</B><BR><BR>
While the majority of MMA fans were wrapped up in the aftermath of UFC 135, Bellator Fighting Championships treated fans to some scintillating bantamweight action. Bellator?s 51st event featured the opening round of the 135 pound tournament, and boasts some of the finest competitor?s in the division today. In all, eight bantamweights took to the cage in hopes of advancing to the next round of the tournament, of course, only four emerged victorious.<BR><BR>
Ed West opened the tournament up when he collided with fan favorite Brazilian, Luis Alberto Nogueria, who entered the tournament as one of the notable favorites. Ed West proved that hard work and tenacity inside the cage pays off, as he never contemplated wresting, instead opting to utilize his range and pick away at Nogueira. In the end, the judges saw in favor of West, who did a fine job of avoiding the aggression of ?Betao?.<BR><BR>
The action only increased as the night progressed. Marcos Galvao displayed his continued evolution while meeting former WEC titleholder Chase Beebe in the second featured fight of the night. The fight proved not only competitive, but extremely memorable. Both men fought for the finish from the jump. Beebe looked to have more than a single guillotine choke sunk tight; his Brazilian foe refused to succumb. Rather, Galvao pushed forward, showcased some highly improved wrestling, and bombarded Beebe with numerous windmill shots that hurt the American repeatedly. While a close fight, Galvao looked the definite victor; Fortunately for him, two of three judges agreed.<BR><BR>
Highly touted Nova Uniao prospect, Eduardo "Dudu" Dantas lived up to the enormous amount of hype behind him, as he soundly outclassed the durable Wilson Reis. Dantas pushed forward from the opening bell, showing no fear of Reis or his punching power. After five minutes Dantas was the obviously superior fighter. He showed no fear in the pocket, and launched vicious shots at Reis. With just over a minute having ticked away in the second frame, Dantas unloaded with a massive flying knee that dropped Reis. A series of follow up punches rendered his Brazilian foe unconscious. Dantas passes another test with flying colors.<BR><BR>
In the evening?s main event, brash featherweight title holder, Joe Warren welcomed former Olympic Bronze medalist, Alexis Vila to the promotion. Vila, who is 40 years old, came out early and established his tournament intentions early. The Cuban defector unleashed a heavy shot that had Warren reeling. Though the outspoken champion appeared to recover fairly well, his rebound didn?t last too long. A brutal left hook completely starched Warren just 64 seconds into the fight. The first time bantamweight competitor was unconscious long before his head bounced off the mat violently.<BR><BR>
The loss marks Warren?s first defeat since submitting to Bibiano Fernandes at the 2009 Dream 11 - Featherweight Grand Prix Final. Two blemishes now mark Warren?s record; the standout wrestler has assembled an impressive 5-1 record for the Bellator promotion, and despite coming up brutally short on Saturday evening, he still holds a firm grasp on the promotions featherweight title.<BR><BR>
With the upset victory banked, Vila emerges a favorite to advance to the finals. Should bracketing favor Vila, and see him paired with Ed West or Marcos Galvao, his chances of advancing increase significantly. Should fate deal a cruel hand, the dangerous 40 year old may find himself facing the future of the division in the form of Eduardo Dantas.<BR><BR>
Check out the full Bellator 51 results below:<BR><BR>

For UFC Veteran Yves Edwards, Toughest Battle Is Within His Own Mind
Filed under: UFC
"I obsess over the stupidest things you can imagine," Edwards said. "I will obsess over the color of towels in my bathroom, or what kind of soap they have [in the hotel]. I had this one soap this one time and that wasn't a great performance, so I can't use this soap again. It's stupid, and it's just a distraction."
With nearly 60 pro fights in a career that's spanned almost 14 years, at least Edwards has had plenty of practice in dealing with his own fight week neurosis. Now he knows how to manage it. For starters, he can bring his own soap. He can also rely on his friends, like Strikeforce welterweight Tyron Woodley, to keep him mentally occupied.
Otherwise, Edwards said, it can get out of hand in a hurry. For instance, say a certain friend is coming to see the fight. Then Edwards starts to think about how he's never won a fight with that guy in the audience. Maybe he's bad luck. Maybe he's cursed.
"But then, I don't want to tell my friends not to come see my fights, so I have to stay away from that stuff," said Edwards, who faces Rafaello Oliveira at UFC on Versus 6 this Saturday night.
"I can catch myself doing it a lot. Stopping it is the hard part. Common sense and rationalization -- I'm a pretty rational person when I'm not in this mode -- that kicks in a little bit and I realize that the color of my underwear has nothing to do with how hard I've prepared for this fight or how focused I am. But it's just the irrational part of my brain, that part kicks in first. I have to talk myself down from it sometimes."
At least Edwards has experience in his favor. Wednesday marks the ten-year anniversary of his UFC debut -- a losing effort against Matt Serra at UFC 33 -- and Saturday's fight comes just one day after his 35th birthday. To Edwards, doing the math on his career numbers and realizing just how long he's been at it comes as "kind of a surprise," he said.
"I still feel like I'm 26. ...The guy that was making his debut in the UFC, he didn't know half the things I know now."
But as Edwards prepares to take on Oliveira -- a Brazilian fighter who he actually trained alongside of and "traded a few secrets" with in the past -- he does so coming off a knockout loss to Sam Stout that UFC president Dana White called "one of the nastiest I've ever seen."
It might not be a must-win fight for Edwards, but 35-year-old fighters can't afford to take too many steps backwards, and he knows it.
"The thing is, nobody gets cut off a win," Edwards said. "Not unless you've done something and screwed up. That's my only concern, is going out there and winning, keeping my job, and keep moving up the ladder."
The fact that he went from a pay-per-view card at UFC 131 to the prelim portion of a UFC on Versus card doesn't worry him, he insisted, just like it doesn't matter that he knows Oliveira to be "a pretty nice guy."
"When it comes to the fight game that means absolutely nothing to me," he said. "... This fight could be behind a Wal-Mart. All I have to worry about is, that's the guy I'm fighting. That's all that matters."
That, and that he remembers not to obsess about the brand of soap in his hotel. After a week of battling himself, the fight should be a relief.

Carlos Condit: I'm The Best Welterweight In The World
MMANEWS.COM Staff Writer<Br><Br>
Carlos Condit has the chance of a lifetime when he meets Georges St. Pierre at UFC 137.<Br><Br>
Condit had been originally pegged to face BJ Penn in a number one contenders match but due to Nick Diaz being removed from the main event, Condit was put in as a replacement.<Br><Br>
Condit talked about his opportunity this week while speaking with Buddhasport.com and gave his thoughts on his place in the welterweight division as well as how things have gone between himself and GSP at Greg Jackson's camp:<Br><Br>
" I've always been a big fan of Georges, I've admired his style and kinda of the way he carries himself and I'm honored to get in their and challenge him for the belt and step in the cage with him. With all that aside I think that I'm the best welterweight in the world and I've been trying to prove that every single time I get in their and this fight is going to be no different."<Br><Br>
On the training with GSP topic:<Br><br>
"We actually never did. There was a time or two when we were training in the gym at the same time, but I think we kind of seen this fight on the horizon. We were always cool and always friendly with each other but he would kind of be doing his thing and I would be doing my own thing. We have never sparred and that would be the best way to get to know somebodies style."<Br><Br>

The More I Change, the More I Stay the Same
I had been working on this since March. I wanted to avoid taking high blood pressure meds, so my doctor asked me to lose 25 pounds. I was 1.8 pounds away from that goal. I was exercising regularly and had also changed my diet drastically, so there was a very good chance I was going to beat the system.
I felt happy and relaxed despite my upcoming TSA experience with a grown man wearing gloves. Actually, I was trying very hard not to think of that part.
Calm.
Calm.
I know he's gonna be checking my prostate, but REMAIN CALM!
Alright, fine. I was relaxed physically, but mentally I was wound tighter than a yo-yo. That's probably why I messed up my usual routine.
Put on coat.
Put on shoes.
Walk through door.
Close and lock door.
Pat down for keys.
Whoops.
So now I'm sitting by my minivan awaiting my sixth grader's return home. I'm locked out of both my minivan and my house. Fortunately, it is a warm, gently breezy day. I've read some news, looked over my novel, and resisted the urge to delete it all as a pile of hopeless dreck. I've even rescheduled my appointment for next month which gives me some time to get rid of that last pound and 8/10ths.
Most of all, I have remained calm. And, more importantly, I have planned how I'm going to save face.
When my daughter returns home, I will duck down, let her open the door, then I'll "show" up a few minutes later and pretend I'd just arrived home. It's a perfect plan, assuming she's remembered her key and doesn't wonder why the minivan was already in the driveway.
Let's just keep this a secret between you few thousand readers and myself, alright?

Matchmaker, matchmaker: Wandy in for Belfort, OSP gets Mousasi
The Zuffa yentes have been hard at work, making matches, finding finds, catching catches for UFC 139 and the Strikeforce event in December.
Dana White announced on Twitter that Wanderlei Silva will now fight Cung Le at UFC 139. Vitor Belfort, who had been tabbed for the main event, is injured. Silva's last fight was a brutal KO by Chris Leben, and afterwards, White had suggested that Silva retire. This is on the same card that will feature Dan Henderson's return to the UFC against Mauricio "Shogun" Rua.
Strikeforce made the first official announcement for their Dec. 17 card that still doesn't have a venue. Former light heavyweight champ Gegard Mousasi will fight Ovince St. Preux. Mousasi's last Strikeforce bout was a draw against Keith Jardine. He won a DREAM bout in Japan in July over Hiroshi Izumi.
St. Preux, who has risen through the ranks in Strikeforce and is on an eight-fight win streak, submitted Joe Cason on a July Challengers card. No other fights have been made official for this card, but it is expected that Gilbert Melendez will defend his lightweight title and featherweight champ Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos will make her return at this event.
Now put on your matchmaking hats -- what other fights would you like to see on that Strikeforce card? Tell us in the comments or on Facebook.

A Thin Line Between Love & Hate: The Great Jon Jones Divide
Filed under: UFC
From the minute he made a serious run at an MMA career, Lesnar was a lock for polarizing reactions. First, there were the people who knew nothing of his decorated amateur wrestling background, choosing only to see him through the prism of his work in professional wrestling. Then, there were the others who resented his immediate elevation to major fights. And finally, there were those who were turned off by his aloof attitude and disinterest in engaging the MMA community past fighting.
For Evans, it was different. He was the little guy among heavyweights when he began his career on The Ultimate Fighter and easily could have turned himself into an underdog story, but instead he forged a first impression that many couldn't and still can't shake. He quickly tangled with the respected veteran Matt Hughes, and was initially seen as a showboater without the skills to warrant it.
But what about Jones?
Unlike Lesnar, Jones had no fame before coming to the UFC. And unlike Evans, he didn't have a built-in audience from a reality show stint. So when he entered the UFC after just eight months of MMA training in 2008, he entered with a blank slate.
Early impressions were good. Jones opened up many eyes in his debut fight, a win over Andre Gusmao on just three weeks' notice. He followed that up with a surprising win over Stephan Bonnar five months later, and from a career standpoint, he was off and running.
With each time out, it became more clear that Jones was heading for big things. He was beginning to finish fights, his fight IQ and confidence were growing, and the headlines were quick to follow. So was the backlash.
Like many reporters that travel to events, I've had the chance to speak to Jones on a few occasions, and find him friendly, smart and engaged. Even though fame has come quickly for him, he doesn't appeared jaded by it. I remember him being the last fighter in the room at the UFC 126 press conference, just hanging out and making conversation. Even though fortune has come quickly for him, he doesn't flaunt it. He doesn't wear flashy jewelry, and last I'd heard, he'd yet to even spring for a new car.
In the cage, he's parts spectacular and effective, stopping all of the last six fighters he's beaten.
With his mix of personality and success, you think Jones would be a lock for a crowd favorite, but that's yet to completely materialize.
Why?
He's overrated. He's phony. He's cocky. He stretches the rules.
He's been accused of everything. Let's run down the laundry list: snitching, spying, swagger-jacking, fighting dirty, ripping apart a training camp, arrogantly signing autographs as the champion before he was one, arrogantly declining to sign autographs on replica belts as the champ after he was one, fighting no one, fighting past-their-prime someones, too religious, too fake, too manufactured.
He also doesn't hand out autographed $100 bills, that monster.
Maybe it's different with Jones because the bandwagon didn't slowly stop along the way, picking up fans as it went. It was a rocket ride, and few had time to join before he blasted off. Maybe it's because the media has spent time force-feeding Jones down their throat.
But the reaction, I just don't get. You watch fights to be entertained, and few will disagree that he's delivered the goods time after time. That's why many boos have greeted Jones to his fights, but he almost always leaves them cheering. The funny thing is I've seen and read many people say that they like watching him fight, but they don't like him. If you like watching him fight, you at least partially like him. You're just rooting with your wallet and time.
The standard reason for disliking Jones is his perceived arrogance. Is he confident? Of course. Wouldn't you be, if you were him? He made it to the UFC after nine months of MMA training. He was the champion at 23. He's a millionaire today. Even with hard work, that type of progression makes him an outlier, a prodigy.
Most 24-year-old males couldn't handle that meteoric rise. Jones has handled it just fine.
If you don't "like" Jones, I'm probably not going to change your conscious mind, but if you appreciate his fighting style, the seeds of fandom are already planted. You're Darth Vader just waiting to cross over from the dark side. And that's a good thing, because rooting against Jones is cheering against progress. If you really want to see what the sport can be and where it can go, this is the type of talent that's going to take us for that ride. This is the type of talent that will stretch the boundaries of what's possible. You want evolution? Here it is, in a 6-foot-4 package. If he loses his way, if he loses his motivation, we miss out.
At some point, maybe those boos will turn to cheers for good. At some point, maybe he'll no longer care about the negativity grenades lobbed his way. Maybe. But for right now, we need Jones. We need to love him or hate him. Sometimes, the two emotions are rooted in the same thing.

Chasing Rainbows for the Information Pot of Gold
I woke up very under the weather. Perhaps it was because Mother Nature had a bad case of Psuedo ADHD this month?not sure which season it was.
"Ooh! I want Spring!
Ooh! Ooh! I want more snow!
Ooh! I'll do both!
Ooh! Ooh! A rainbow!"
She's been like a newborn puppy frolicking about after butterflies, though truth be told, the butterflies have had the good sense to wait for Mother Nature to make her mind up this year before making an appearance.
Yes, I realize that the caterpillars have to arrive first. Don't mess with my metaphor.
At any rate, yesterday I was not as frolicsome as a puppy or as flittery as a butterfly. Instead, my head swum uncertainly in my skull, as if it were trying to get comfortable but needed to turn around a few times to find just the right spot. I just parked myself on the couch, laughed at the idea of showering and shaving, and curled up in a fetal position with my iPad and Kindle as the center of my universe for a few hours.
I am feeling fine now, but I worry about later.
You see, I'm an information junkie.
There are links between ADHD and addiction. I wrote about this six years ago regarding a study that showed links between ADD and drug addicts' Dopamine levels. It also tied in with Depression.
There is a happy dance of endorphins in my mind whenever I find something new. So I hunt and hunt for it, always looking for something that gives that rush of endorphins. I don't see it that way at the time. I'm just tapping link after link after link trying to stave off boredom, but in essence I am just trying to get my fix.
That is, I used to be like that. One of the things that I discovered during this year of my Splintered Mind Project was that being an info junkie wreaked havoc with my efforts to squeeze writing into my free time. What time is left when there is so much news to read? I clearly needed to kick the habit. Yet, what would I replace that yearning for reading with? I had been trying to kick the habit for years.
It was around this time last year that I discovered an interesting thing. I was fresh on my way to write my thousand page chapter book for children when I began to wonder what most authors did with their time. So many of them claimed to write 1000 words per day. To amateurs that sounds like a lot, but a typical blog for me here is 900 words. I was blogging two 600 word blogs a week for HealthyPlace.com. 1000 words might might take an hour or two. What did the authors do with the other hours in their day?
While I studied what things they tweeted and blogged about to paint a picture in my mind on how they organized their time, I began to notice that none of the authors were news junkies like myself. They were book junkies. In fact, many of these authors were chewing through books like a five year old through a pack of gum. Could I do the same, but with more restraint? Over the course of the year, I limited my news reading to one hour a day and began reading and studying more and more books. At the same time, I pushed myself to write more and more as well.
In the end, I found a constructive way to feed my need for NEW without losing control of it. It's important to keep abreast of current events, but it's not something that should consume our entire day. ADHD and info addiction doesn't have to be a detriment. We just need to be willing to unlearn bad habits and redirect our boundless energies into constructive pursuits. We need to remember that there is no satisfaction at the end of a news junky's rainbow. There is only a need for more news.
Even though I was too sick to do more than read news, poke about Facebook & Twitter, and kill zombies with plants yesterday, after a while I grew bored with it all. No relapse for me. That's what six months of training will do. I picked up a book about writing books
Next time: Family Life and how four kids and a wife traipse across my writing plans like a platoon of grunts on D-day.
