Maxfield Parrish Sunset with Surprises

Big turnout

Today's sky looked nothing like this photo's. The clouds clung to the mountains instead of rising above them. In their own way they were beautiful, but by the end of the day the grey, wintery clouds blotted out the sunset and let only a tiny splash of color escape far off in the South West.

After attending the First Annual Irish Music Festival last August, my girls and I were treated to Maxfield Parrish skies all the way home. It was like suddenly being given an unexpected desert when we had already experienced a full, delicious meal. What a memory that made for us in the mountains of Park City, Utah.

Today felt a little like that as I made my words per day goal then went on to write more and more. What a great feeling that was.

Later that evening I sat and listened to my wife chatter about work and things while she cooked me a tasty meal of sauted mushrooms and spinach on a turkey burger. I then realized suddenly that I felt immensely satisfied with my writing success and was therefore able to give her my full attention. No panic about unfinished projects. No worry about failure. No distraction. Just full enjoyment of the moment.

I'm not sure what has happened this week, but today was phenomenally productive just like yesterday. I'm actually looking forward to tomorrow.

ADHD & Li'l Bedlamites Make Horrible Co-Writers

Can a full-time dad with ADHD find time to write a novel? After a year trying, I can safely say, "ARGH!"

Dancing Bedlamites © Douglas Cootey

Although ADHD has been and will continue to be my greatest obstacle in completing this novel, family has proven to be my greatest external disruption. Take today, for instance. I woke up wondering if my debut novel was interesting enough. I've been working on it off and on for over a year and beginning to be bored with it. Maybe something else would be more exciting? Maybe there's not enough peril?

ADHD and a bit of Depression are mixing with my morning, and after less than 45 seconds of this I think "Shut up." I'm not going to abandon this story in the last fifth of the book after working so hard to come this far. Besides, the next chapter features phantom cats with big teeth. Perilous enough? Sheesh.

And in a blip I'm back on track.

Family, on the other hand, is like a freight train loaded with diarrhetic elephants crashing through my wall when my toilet is plugged. I have little choice when emergency happens, and I find myself frantically hunting around for the metaphorical plunger and the keys to the minivan while putting on shoes, then pants. It's complete bedlam.

My 16 year old is home sick today, so I can still have a normal schedule, but if the 12 year old was home sick, there would be a change, not the least because she loves to talk. And talk. And talk. Nevermind the 9 year old with cerebral palsy and epilepsy who requires constant supervision. Otherwise, things get broken. Or she'll somehow manage to dump an entire cracker box full of crumbs all over the TV, couch, rug, and, inexplicably, the folded laundry in an entirely different room. Don't even get me started on the random emergencies my 19 year old has while living on her own in college. An entire day can get lost dealing with my girls.

I'm not complaining, mind you. I helped make the li'l darlings, and as a full-time dad it is my job to take care of them. I just can't expect to get anything else done when I'm doing that. Writing a book while being the ringmaster of my very own circus requires a great deal of organizing. Although I expected myself to solve or eliminate some of the problems I listed with my Splintered Books Project, family was not one of those items that could be eliminated.

Many great artists and thinkers in history were horrible family men. Even the venerable Benjamin Franklin was a lousy husband and father. If I wanted to abdicate my responsibilities and pretend I was a single guy again, I suppose I could accomplish all my dreams, assuming ADHD didn't still get in the way. I know of men who have done just that. They loved the act of making babies, but weren't so excited with the results, so they walked away from family.

But that's not the path for me.

Sometimes our lives are the greatest contributor to the chaos of our ADHD lives. But there is no Inbox Zero method to simplify family. Family is chaos. What else would you expect with a household filled with immature dependents? The trick is to learn coping strategies to help minimize the chaos.

What I found helpful in the here and now was to learn to write when the girls weren't home. But when? Most ADHD people I know are night owls. We get wrapped up with something that engages our mind and forget to go to sleep. Or, as was the case for me, the house was finally quiet at night. Years ago, this worked well for me. I'd take care of the kids during the afternoon and into the evening, then get to work after 10pm when the house was finally quiet. But after years of insomnia I was more and more tired at night and less able to work. In essence I was working full-time during the day, then moonlighting and sleeping less. I was burning out.

I needed to turn my schedule around and work BEFORE I got tired when the kids were at school?a simple solution that was a lot of work to implement. I also spent months training the kids to respect my writing time if I was still writing when they came home. It took a lot of reminders, and they still have a tendency to walk up to me in the middle of a thought and start chitchatting about their day, but over all I am much better off than I was a year ago.

Writing a book while taking care of family isn't easy with ADHD, but then it isn't easy without ADHD either. We need to learn to be flexible with the chaos and to not get adamant about keeping a standard words per day count that matches our less saddled peers. For many of us, writing a book is a side project and not a source of income yet. Family still remains the first priority. An unfinished book will sit there waiting patiently for you, but the unfinished child will be a legacy of failure that will haunt you for decades to come.

With luck, I'll finish both book and family to everyone's satisfaction. Now if only I could find that plunger.

Bipolar: What is Normal Now?

=>PLEASE FORWARD TO FRIENDS, FAMILY AND LOVED ONES <= Hi , How's it going for you today? I hope it's a good day for you. I heard this thing that Norma Bombeck, the famous author, once said, that normal is just a setting on your dryer. And I thought that was funny. Because a lot of people write to me or talk to me about how they don't feel normal or think they are normal anymore just because they've got bipolar disorder now. Or their supporters write to me or talk to me and say that their lives aren't normal anymore because their loved one has bipolar disorder now. And I thought about what Norma Bombeck said. What is normal, anyway? I think it's whatever is normal for you. Or maybe you had a "normal" before, but now you just have a different "normal." Does that make sense? I have a friend who goes to Alcoholics Anonymous, and she says they have a saying that talks about "living life on life's terms." And that helps define normal for them. I have another friend who says "you have to play the hand that you're dealt." I think what they mean is that no, you didn't ask to have bipolar disorder, or to have a loved one with the disorder - and yes, your lives have certainly changed because of it... But that doesn't mean your lives have to be worse because of it, either. Your life is whatever you make it - whatever "normal" is for you. In my courses/systems, I don't talk in terms of normal or abnormal. I talk in terms of stability. And I think that's what you should be concentrating on more. SUPPORTING AN ADULT WITH BIPOLAR DISORDER? Visit: http://www.bipolarsupporter.com/report11 SUPPORTING A CHILD/TEEN WITH BIPOLAR DISORDER? Visit: http://www.bipolarparenting.com HAVE BIPOLAR DISORDER? Visit: http://www.survivebipolar.net And I don't think you should be comparing yourself to other people, either. I've seen that happen at some of the support groups I volunteer at, and it's pretty sad, because it makes some people feel better while making other people feel worse. I'm sorry if that sounds mean, but I've seen it happen too many times. The ones who are doing really well kind of look down on the ones who aren't, the ones who are still struggling. And the ones who are still struggling compare themselves to the ones who are doing really well and wonder if there's something wrong with them, because they aren't doing as good. That's what I mean by what is normal, anyway. Are you NOT normal if you're not doing as good as someone else with their bipolar disorder? And if you're a supporter, are you not normal if you're not handling your loved one's bipolar disorder as good as the next supporter of a loved one with bipolar disorder? NO! You're doing the best you can for YOU! And THAT is NORMAL for YOU! Every person has their own normal. Please don't compare yourself to anyone else. The only people you should be concerned about are yourselves. If you are doing the best you can, then that's the best you can hope to do for you. No one can except any more from you. I'm sure that's all your loved one expects from you, anymore. And all you should expect from yourself. What do you think? I have written often about time in this blog.  Many physicians worry that our health care payment system encourages speed rather than contemplation.  We become slaves to the clock.  We must see our patients in 15 or 20 minute time periods.  We are criticized when we run late, therefore we become reluctant to spend the [...]

Depression from Chronic Pain: Should You Try Physical Therapy?

I have discovered that chronic pain depression is another ball game. I personally find the depression from daily, unrelenting pain to be a hundred times worse to deal with. It is truly the worst depression I have ever felt. Some days it becomes painful to even try to smile. With bipolar, I tend to laugh and try to hide it and fool people. I can't do that with pain. Oh I could at first, but it's been over a decade now and smiling has become more difficult.

Dana White - UFC "likes the idea" of Rich Franklin vs. Tito Ortiz for later this year

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

FranklinRich_150CG_35.jpg
A light heavyweight bout between two former UFC Champions could come together later this fall, as UFC President Dana White said the organization was interested in a potential fight between Rich Franklin and Tito Ortiz.

During a video chat with fans at UStream, White said the UFC does "like the idea" of that matchup, and should both agree to the fight, it could potentially come this year.

Franklin was supposed to return to action earlier this month at UFC 133, but when his opponent Antonio Rogerio Nogueira was forced out of the card, and there wasn't a suitable "big name" replacement, Franklin pulled out of the event as well. The former UFC Middleweight Champion is 3-3 over his last six fights, alternating wins and losses in fights at light heavyweight and 195 lbs.

Ortiz stepped up earlier this month on that UFC 133 card to face Rashad Evans in the main event after Phil Davis suffered an injury, taking an extra payday after earning his first win in nearly five years when he submitted Ryan Bader in July. However, Evans was the superior fighter, and handed Ortiz his first stoppage loss since being finished by Chuck Liddell at UFC 66.

There's nothing definite on this fight just yet, but it's a bout the UFC has their eyes on, and if it takes place it could be a very entertaining fight between two longtime veteran fighters.

Penick's Analysis: This is definitely a fight I'd like to see for both guys. They each get a well known name as an opponent, and regardless of how their past fights have gone a win is equally as important for them. If the UFC can put it together, it immediately make a good addition to any main card, and it's a fight that could be quite good as well. Without a ton of other options, it's quite possible this is the fight that fans get later this year from them.

Ask and you shall receive: Nogueira gets UFC 134 KO bonus

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira pulled a big upset on Saturday night, knocking out Brendan Schaub in Rio de Janeiro, just miles from his home and gym. Understandably, he was elated after the fight.

That $100,000 that he's asking for is the super-sized knockout of the night bonus. Good news for Nogueira is that UFC president Dana White agreed and awarded the bonus to Nog. Edson Barboza and Ross Pearson's bout won Fight of the Night. Even though the fights were in Brazil and chock-full of Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioners, there were no submissions, so a submission of the night was not awarded.

Tavares hooks Fisher with a TKO at UFC 134

Thiago Tavares continued the Brazilian win streak going at UFC 134 with a TKO of Spencer Fisher in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday night.

Tavares worked Fisher against the cage for most of the first round, controlling Fisher and keeping him from landing any significant strikes. Tavares followed the same gameplan in the second round, but was more aggressive. He was able to take Fisher's back, and then transition to full mount. He let strikes rain down on Fisher's head until the bout was stopped 2:51 into the second round.

Afterwards, he jumped on the fence and waved a Brazilian flag as the raucous crowd chanted, "Thiago!" It was clearly a special moment for the fighter born and raised in Brazil.

You tell us: Guida or a title shot for Ben Henderson?

Ben Henderson's dominating win over Jim Miller gave the UFC a conundrum. With a win, Miller was expected to take on the winner of Gray Maynard and Frankie Edgar's October title bout. Henderson threw a gigantic wrench in those plans.

Now, what to do with Henderson? Though he was non-committal immediately after his fight, Henderson has since said he is open to either a title shot or a bout with Clay Guida, who has been on an impressive run since losing to Kenny Florian late in 2009.

Clay Guida for the Battle of Crazy Hair and a title shot: Henderson's one recent loss is to Anthony Pettis, a fighter that Guida beat in June. Guida has four wins in a row, with three ending in submissions. With both Guida and Henderson coming off big wins, it would make the most sense to match them up, with the winner getting a shot at the UFC lightweight title.

Give 'Smooth' the title shot now: The beating he gave Miller (who was on a seven-fight win streak), the win over Mark Bocek (in Henderson's UFC debut), and the close (until the Showtime kick) loss to Anthony Pettis mean that Henderson is ready for a title shot. UFC 134 Live Blog: Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Brendan Schaub Updates

Filed under:

Nogueira vs. Brendan Schaub at UFC 134 in Rio.RIO DE JANEIRO -- This is the UFC 134 live blog for Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Brendan Schaub, a heavyweight bout on tonight's UFC: Rio pay-per-view at the HSBC Arena in Brazil.

Nogueira (32-6-1) is returning from multiple surgeries, but is claiming he is finally healthy thanks to the layoff. Schaub (8-1) in March knocked out Mirko Cro Cop for his fourth straight UFC win.

The live blog is below.

Round 1: Not surprisingly, Nogueira gets a lot of love from the Brazilian fans. Schaub, not so much. Right off the bat, Nogueira ducks under a Schaub punch combo to look for the clinch, but Schaub won't stay there. Nogueira shoots for a double-leg, but again Schaub stops him and moves back to the center of the cage. Schaub misses with a big uppercut and gets tagged, but comes back with a left that sticks Nogueira. Stiff jab from Schaub puts Nog on his heels for a second. Nogueira keeps pressing forward and pops Schaub's head back with a straight punch. Nog comes forward behind a punch combo and again looks to bring the fight to the floor, but no dice. Nogueira lands a nice left that puts Schaub against the fence, then follows with a blistering combo. A left hook lands right on the button and Schaub goes face first into the mat. Nogueira adds a couple punches, but they're hardly necessary. Schaub is all the way out. Almost immediately, nearly full beers come flying into the Octagon. Time to cover the laptop with my body.

George Lucas? daughter wins by submission in Japan

The force was with Amanda Lucas as she won her second MMA bout, a submission over Hikaru Shinohara at DEEP 55 in Japan. Lucas, the daughter of "Star Wars" creator George Lucas, won with an armbar in the first round.

Former Strikeforce fighter Roxanne Modafferi was on hand for the bout, and shared how the fight went down on her blog:

She pretty much creamed Hikaru Shinohara. She mounted her and the Japanese girl could totally not move. Lucas was just hitting her and hitting her over and over, but she didn't put her full body weight into it, so it wasn't doing a lot of damage. Hikaru was defending her jaw area, so the punches bounced off her forehead and temple. That's probably why the Japanese ref, who are notorious for stopping fights early, let it go on. Finally Amanda realized that the fight wasn't gonna get stopped, so she transitioned to a beautiful arm bar. It was FULLY extended, but the Japanese fighter wasn't tapping. Her cornerman threw the towel- rightfully so, but she was so upset that stalked back to her corner and punched him as hard as she could. I'm told that he got a black eye.

That's enough drama for George Lucas to create a whole new series. A cornerman stopping a fight only to be rewarded with a punch? That's worth at least a subplot in his next film.

Amanda was supposed to fight in Oklahoma in April, but her bout was scrapped at the last minute. She has been training at Fairtex, Cesar Gracie Academy and with Gilbert Melendez's Skrap Pack.

63-year-old holds off robber with rear naked choke

A robber messed with the wrong man in Florida on Thursday night. 63-year-old, 5-foot-7 Fred Kemp used a foot sweep and a rear naked choke to disarm a robber who pointed a gun at Kemp and his wife.

The couple was getting into their car in Boynton Beach when a man came out of the darkness and approached them with what turned out to be a pellet gun. Wanting to keep his wife safe, Kemp returned to the skills that he learned as a wrestler for Hofstra University.

"He started to hit me, so I reacted from there," a bruised but smiling Kemp said Friday. "I got him out into the street and held his arm. I foot-sweeped him down and I was trying to get a hold of the gun. He banged me up a little bit but my main concern was the gun."

Kemp's quick thinking led him to apply a rear-naked choke, then when the robber was weakened, he took the gun from him. The police report mentioned that Kemp held the robber down until the police arrived.

"He asked me to let him go when I had him down," Kemp said. "I said, 'No, I'm not going to do that.'"

Fighters who started as wrestlers often go back to rely on their wrestling skills when they get in trouble in a fight. Clearly, that instinct sticks with them, because Kemp was smart enough to rely on his sport when danger found him. Joe DeMeo, a friend of Kemp's through wrestling, was not surprised to hear that Kemp took out the criminal.

"Fred Kemp's the last guy I would rob," DeMeo said. "He'll go down fighting. ? He does have a lot of physical ability. He's a no-nonsense, get-the-job-done kind of guy."

Remember that the next time you approach a diminutive 63-year-old. It's probably not a good idea to mess with him.

The Sky's the Limit This Month

Chinese food has given me a green light to rock this month. Too bad there's only 4 days left.I received a magical fortune two days ago. It informed me that my month was going to rock. There were only four days left to the month, so I was left wondering how I was going to make that happen over a weekend. Of course, the whole thing was silly. My month had already rocked.

Aside from a productive month writing, a wee bit of drawing, and being listed as one of 6 Awesome Adults with ADHD over at wegohealth.com, I had an opportunity to attend the Superstars Writing Seminar and took it.

My life has been permanently enriched. My eyes have been opened. I was doing everything all wrong, yet, miraculously, I came away enthusiastic, not devastated.

Something about being in the presence of other would-be authors, as well as successful authors who share their experiences openly, was a heady mix for me. Almost euphoric.

Here are some highlights:
  • Kevin Anderson's 11 tips on successful writing was worth every cent I spent attending the seminar. If I had heard those tips last year, I might have finished my book by my birthday as I had planned.
  • Telling people in a forum to come up and talk to me was not desperate, as one author (perhaps jokingly) informed me, but brilliant. I met so many people because I did that.
  • Talking with strangers wasn't as painful as I had feared, though I don't know how the experience was for those on the receiving end.
  • Don't have lunch with Eric Flint and two authors from the Grantville Gazette if you have only read one of Eric's books. Your mind will swim during the discussions of wooden tanks and other anachronistic minutiae.
  • Rebecca Moesta has ADHD and writes books for a living, so there was proof for me that it could be done.
  • Sitting in the back of the room to make frequent exits to prevent the onset of ticking worked phenomenally well. It also helped offset ADHD boredom whenever I got fidgety.

Although I took something away from every guest author, Kevin's tips were truly the most impactive for me. They built on a discussion I had with Carol Lynch Williams a week before. Basically, because I edited while I wrote, and because I wrote without an outline, I was making more work for myself. I'd finish one chapter, come up with cool ideas in the next chapter that would demand revisions of the previous chapter, then write another new chapter that would demand revisions in the previous chapters, etc. As the chapters stacked up, revising would take longer. I was heading nowhere fast.

I knew this could not possibly be how books were written.

Kevin's tips, succinctly boiled down as bullet points for a presentation, took me to the next level. I needed to dare to be bad, I needed to separate editing and writing, and I needed to utilize whatever time I had available to me. I always tell my family at there is no Golden Moment. We must carve time out of our days to do the things we want, not wait for spare time to arrive. I needed to apply my own advice to writing.

Over the next few weeks I will go over the different things I learned, but for now I am fired up with focus. The conference didn't concentrate on the elements of craft. It honed in on the elements of productivity and application. It was perfect for a frazzled mind such as mine. If I can swing it, I will definitely attend the conference again next year in Las Vegas. In the meantime I may only have a day and a half left to my month, but the sky's the limit so I expect good things?for this month & beyond.

Follow me on Twitter for my ADHD escapades at @SplinteredMind or my novel writing project over at @DouglasCootey. And if you're a glutton for punishment you can friend me on Facebook as well.

I often did the same thing that Liz does in this comic - that is, withhold mentioning symptoms to my caregivers while in the hospital. I feared that I'd never get out if I told them about some of them. In one hospital ward, I even withheld mentioning that I felt dehumanized by the way my psychiatrist talked to my father in front of me as though I wasn't there, fearing that if I complained, it would be considered a sign of "hostility" on my part. Ridiculous, some of the behaviours we patients had to tolerate from the very people dictating to us how we should behave!

Nogueira hopes to answer the critics in his comeback fight

It seems like Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira went from contender to card filler overnight. That really hasn't been the case, but for many there's a lot of doubt over what the PRIDE fighting legend has left in the tank.

"Big Nog" is only 35 years old, but he's battled injuries over the last three years and gone just 1-2. Now he's facing one of the UFC's young lions in Brendan Schaub. It's been a long battle against knee and hip injuries.

"Besides my physical and technical performance, I have the will to do anything. See four months ago, I couldn't walk. I recovered for several months to take this challenge to fight at UFC Rio," said Nogueira.

Nogueira said his rapid return was made possible by his high level training partners like Junior dos Santos, Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza, Rafael Cavalcante and Antonio "Big Foot" Silva.

Damon Martin from MMAWeekly and ProMMARadio's Larry Pepe joined Cagewriter to break down Big Nog's chances against Schaub.

Rousey gets somewhat unsatisfying win with controversial stoppage at Strikeforce

Ronda Rousey came to Las Vegas with a lot of hype and didn't disappoint as she quickly slapped on her signature move, the armbar on Sarah D'Alelio. The fight was stopped quickly, but Rousey didn't get to celebrate much.

The 25-second victory was marred by controversy because referee Steve Mazzagatti seemed to panic and stop the fight without seeing or hearing an actual tap from D'Alelio.

"When I originally went for the submission I felt the elbow go out, I really cranked on it and I turned to the referee and said, 'she said tap.' I don't think she could use her other arm. I was just trying to be respectful to her," Rousey told Showtime announcer Mauro Ranallo.

D'Alelio told her corner that she didn't tap. She repeated the same thing to Ranallo. She admitted she simply groaned in pain, but never tapped or verbally gave up.

Rousey may have talked the ref into the stoppage, but only because of what she heard from officials before the fight.

"When I first went for the submission, I cranked on it. I heard it pop. I let go," Rousey said. "She said something. In the locker room, they said anything verbal they'll count it as a verbal forfeit."

Even with the odd finish, Rousey moves to 3-0 and was impressive. She's making the transition to MMA from the world of Judo where she was a two-time Olympian. With the use her grappling, throws and a nasty transition into that armbar, Rousey, 24, stormed through five previous opponents in less than three minutes.

The other Roy Jones loses bloody battle to Derrick Mehmen

The first fight of the televised card also left the audience walking away thinking 'what if?' Roy Jones, a 6-foot-4 light heavyweight, destroyed Derrick Mehmen for the first three minutes of the fight, but possessed no takedown defense. Even as Mehmen's eye closed and he spurted blood from a huge gash over that eye for 10-plus minutes, Jones couldn't get off his back and lost via unanimous decision.
