Was Mir’s performance lousy? White changes his tune
"Borderline embarrassing" were the words Dana White used to describe the Frank Mir-Roy Nelson fight at UFC 130. That was just moments after he watched a pair of 260-pounders lock horns and fight in closed space for most of the 15 minutes. Mir won the brawl via unanimous decision, 30-27, 30-2 and 30-26, but it�didn't win�over everyone in attendance.
"It was a sloppy heavyweight fight," White said. "I'm not happy about the performance from either one of them. I thought it was borderline embarrassing."
It was the second straight fight where White expressed disappointment in Mir's performance.
At UFC 119, Mir was denied a knockout bonus despite producing the only KO finish of the night against Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic.
"If they were earlier in the card, it would be one thing. But when you're in the co-main or the main event, that's when you take the most criticism," White said. "I don't like every time bashing Frank Mir, but what are you going to do?
"Frank Mir has been a two-time world champion. He's been around a long time. He's a super-talented guy. I expect more of him."
Mir wasn't at the postfight press conference. He was at the hospital having a broken jaw and possible fractured ribs tended to. Maybe that news changed White's mind a bit about the quality of the fight.
"I think I was a little harsh on Mir," White told MMAjunkie on Sunday. "He came into that fight with the perfect game plan, and he nailed Roy with some big shots. Mir dominated that fight from start to finish, and he deserves some credit for that."
That doesn't mean he's backing off his criticism of Nelson, who White suggested needs to get down in the 240-pound range.
"I thought Roy looked terrible tonight," White said. "I thought it was terrible. I thought it was embarrassing.� I have a meeting with him on Friday, and we'll see what happens."
Frankly, none of this "too fat" stuff should come as a surprise. The UFC has always worried about Nelson's slovenly appearance.
"Joe Silva was telling me to lose some weight and gain some muscle. He said I need the UFC look," Nelson told TAGG radio back in 2008.
Many fans freaked out at the time, but now it's clear that it's not a cosmetic thing. Nelson is a very skilled fighter, but he's hurting his chances to beat the best in the world by continuing to fight around 265 pounds. Should White go as far as giving Nelson an ultimatum?

Well it's that time again. It?s time to bet imaginary money in order to win nothing! It's time to pick the winners in order to, well, to win nothing. UFC 129 was a fantastic card, and here's hoping that an underappreciated UFC 130 can match its predecessor in terms of entertainment value. Also, let's hope that I don't have to delete damn near half the entries like I had to for the UFC 129 games! To clarify, read the rules at the bottom of this page. They aren't hard, yet the number of invalid entries continues to climb for every event for some reason. After consulting with Jamie Penick, I will not be informing you if you send in an invalid entry. So once again, read the rules. If you have questions, just ask.
Unpleasantries aside, let's look forward to UFC 130's matchups. Our defending champion in the Betting game is Danny Mellor. Danny will be defending his Betting championship against MMA Torch Editor Jamie Penick. I don't know about you, but I?m setting the lines at Mellor -200, Penick +160. And in the Confidence Picks game, Shaun Godric Louis will defend his title against Simon Kerry, who edged the aforementioned Penick on tiebreakers at UFC 129. Good luck all!

CONFIDENCE PICKS GAME RULES
NOTE: A player does not need to play both games during each event. Players may choose to submit an entry for one game or the other, or for both, at their own choosing.
Assign a number from 1 through 12 (if a 12 fight card, 1 through 11 if a 11 fight card, etc.), with the highest number going to the fighter you are most confident in winning. Also list your prediction for method of victory, along with the round (or decision if you predict a decision)
Using UFC 124 as a template, here is how simple an entry will look:
Georges St-Pierre ? 11 - decision
Thiago Alves - 10 - KO2
Jim Miller - 9 - decision
Stefan Struve - 8 - KO1
Ricardo Almeida - 7 - sub3
Mark Bocek - 6 - sub2
Joe Stevenson - 5 - decision

John Makdessi - 1 - decision
The first tie-breaker is the sum of confidence points. Using the example above, a Georges St-Pierre victory would earn 11 points, Thiago Alves winning would earn 10 points, etc.
If two participants earn the same number of confidence points, the next tie-breaker will be total number of winners predicted. If Player A earns 40 points on 7 winning picks, and if Player B earns 40 points on 6 winning picks, Player A would be declared the winner.
The next tie-breaker is the number of victory methods predicted correctly. Next would be predicted rounds of victory.
If both players are still tied at this point, both players will be declared winner, and they will face off again, along with the winner of the pool (to be described later), at the next event in a three way dance.
There is no money being wagered in this game, and there are no prizes, short of bragging rights.
BETTING GAME RULES
1.) Every player has $1000 of fake, imaginary, theoretical, play money to wager on each event. This is not a real money game, it is strictly for fun.
2.) Players must place a bet of at least $50, but not more than $500, on each of 3 or more different fighters. Bets may be in any denomination, as long as the amount falls in the range of $50 - $500.
3.) Players may also place a parlay bet. A parlay bet is a bet placed on multiple fighters. All fighters in the parlay must win their fights in order for the parlay to pay off. Parlay bets pay off at a higher rate than a bet on a single fighter. The parlay bet may be placed on either 2 or on 3 fighters.
4.) The minimum parlay bet is $50. The maximum parlay bet is $200. This money comes out of the $1000 allotted to each player. The parlay bet is not separate from the $1000 budget. A player is not required to play a parlay bet. The maximum number of parlay bets a player may wager is one.
5.) Whether or not a player chooses to place a parlay bet, the player must still place at least three straight bets ie: It is not legal to place two bets on individual fighters and one parlay bet. No entry is considered valid unless there are a minimum of 3 straight bets placed on individual fighters.
6.) If a fight ends in a draw, any money bet on said fighter will be refunded, with no fake money commission taken. If a fighter in a 3-fighter parlay is involved in a draw, that fighter will be removed from the parlay and the 3-fighter parlay will be treated as a 2-fighter parlay. If a fighter in a 2-fighter parlay is involved in a draw, that fighter will be removed from the parlay and the 2-fighter parlay will be treated as a straight bet on the remaining fighter.
Instructions on how to read and utilize the betting lines
7.) If a fighter has a positive number such as +150 next to his name, he is the underdog, which means a successful bet on that fighter will pay off at a higher rate. That means that if the fighter wins, the bet will payout $150 net profit for every $100 bet on him. If a player were to bet $500 on a +150 fighter, and the fighter wins, the player will profit $750. If a player bets $500 on a +150 fighter, and the fighter loses, the player will lose his $500 bet.
8.) If a fighter has a negative number such as -200 next to his name, he is the favorite, which means a successful bet on that fighter will pay off at a lower rate. That means that if the fighter wins, the bet will payout $100 net profit for every $200 bet on him. If a player were to bet $500 on a -200 fighter, and the fighter wins, the player will profit $250. If a player bets $500 on a -200 fighter, and the fighter loses, the player will lose his $500 bet.
Structure for each game
9.) For each UFC numbered event, both the Confidence Picks and Betting Game will feature a champion and a challenger facing off against one another. The winner of the head to head battle will be declared the reigning champion.
10.) All other players for each UFC numbered event will compete against each other for the right to face off against the reigning champion at the next UFC numbered event. This is known as The Pool.
11.) As games administrator, I have the subjective right to eliminate any entry for any reason I deem worthy.
12.) Entries may be submitted via email (mmatorchrich@gmail.com), or on the comment section of this post. Email is the preferred method, because if a player posts an invalid entry, I have no way to make sure I can get hold of the player so that it may be corrected. Please, under no circumstances should you both email and post on the board your entry. One or the other please, preferably email.
13.) Any questions, please email me and ask. There are no new rules in this list of rules. I just wanted to have everything listed together. But that said, if you have a question, just ask.

Frank Mir outworked Roy Nelson for three rounds on Saturday night at UFC 130, defeating "Big Country" in a one-sided decision with scores of 30-27, 30-27 and 30-26.
The fight got off to a great start, with both fighters landing a number of big strikes in the first round and keeping up a very good pace. Mir took the round with more volume in his strikes, as well as more damage done with a brutal series of knees to the head in the clinch sticking out.
As the second round began, it was clear that Nelson had expended a lot of energy in the first frame attempting to land his big overhand right, and in failing to do so Mir took the rest of the fight over. Keeping Nelson busy on the cage, Mir mixed a number of takedowns in as well in the second and third round to wear him out more.
In the third, Mir did a bunch of damage in the half guard, battering Nelson with a elbows and short forearms. Nelson survived to the end of the round, but he had nothing to offer in the second and third rounds, giving Mir the decision across the board.
He'll now look to re-insert himself back into the mix in the top end of the heavyweight division, while Nelson goes back to the drawing board after consecutive decision losses.
Penick's Analysis: Mir had a really good performance in this fight. He took Nelson's best in the first, still won the round, and took the fight over from there. I'd like to see him against a number of Strikeforce's heavyweights if they can be pulled over, but regardless he'll get a top opponent his next time out. Nelson hit his ceiling in his last two fights. He's just not ever going to beat guys that are bigger, stronger and hit harder than him, and though he can still knock out a lot of guys in the division, his limits are all the more clear after his last two losses.

UFC 130′s Three Stars: Browne, Stann and Boetsch
UFC 130's main events were less than thrilling, but the undercard delivered. Which fighters stood out?
No. 1 star -- Travis Browne: Coming off of an unsatisfying draw with Cheick Kongo, Browne was determined to not leave this one in the hands of the judges. Instead, he threw a superman punch that sent the 6-foot-11 Struve flying, and sent Browne home with an extra $70,000 in his pocket.
No. 2 star -- Brian Stann: Leave it up to a Marine to perform on Memorial Day weekend. Fighting a game Jorge Santiago, "The All-American" Stann dominated the bout and ended it with a KO near the end of the second-round.
No 3 star -- Tim Boetsch: In his first bout at middleweight, Boetsch showed that dropping an extra 20 lbs. didn't slow him down at all. He controlled Kendall Grove for every minute of the fight, using takedowns and ground-and-pound to earn a unanimous decision, and a spot as someone to watch in the middleweight division.

There's one clear change already being made for Strikeforce cards now that Zuffa is in control of the ship, and that's the booking of preliminary card fights for their events with contracted talent instead of with a local booker.
The organization announced on Friday another bout for next month's Strikeforce "Overeem vs. Werdum" event at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, as Julie Kedzie and Amanda Nunes will faceoff on the card.
Kedzie makes her Strikeforce debut riding a four fight winning streak, most recently defeating Kaitlin Young in April to win the Jackson's MMA Series Women's Bantamweight Championship. The seven-year veteran is perhaps best known for her EliteXC loss to Gina Carano, but she has posted an 8-2 record in ten fights since that loss.
22-year-old Brazilian Nunes enters her second fight in Strikeforce on a six fight win streak since losing her professional debut. In her Strikeforce debut in January, she blasted through Julia Budd, knocking her out in 14 seconds.
Strikeforce "Overeem vs. Werdum" takes place on June 18, airing live on Showtime and headlined by the heavyweight bout between Alistair Overeem and Fabricio Werdum.
Penick's Analysis: They are really stacking this card for Strikeforce, and I'd assume we'll be seeing a number of fights on Facebook from the event with what they are booking. It's a good thing for the fighters under contract with Strikeforce, as it means they'll get booked a lot more often, and it's going to make these cards more interesting and more stacked overall. This fight itself should be an entertaining one, as Nunes was highly impressive in her win over Budd and has stopped all of the opponents she's beaten, and Kedzie is a tough veteran challenge for her.

Tony Ferguson explains offensive TUF outburst
Ferguson discussed the incident in his post on the SB Nation MMA blog:
Why did I bring up Charlie's son? I have no idea, but I have a guess. My birth father wasn't there for me growing up. Somehow Charlie's situation mixed in with my adrenaline from fighting and the booze all worked together to bring up my own issues. I learned a lot about myself watching that on tape and how I felt about certain things in my life. I was under a lot of pressure, I was trying to bottle up frustration and it didn't work. Well, it worked for a while, but ultimately did not.
I said some things I shouldn't have said. I was in a weird place. I was having crazy dreams in that house. The entire experience took me out of my own independence and removed all of my release valves.
I really regret saying what I said to Charlie and we've talked about it since the incident. I've spoke to Clay Harvison and Chuck, too. We are in a better place now than we were that night.
In the post, Ferguson mentions that they started drinking immediately after the fights, and adrenaline was still pumping through his veins.
Every TUF castmate I've spoken to has mentioned how weird the experience is. They're in a house for six weeks with no television, books, visitors or privacy. They get to train, drink, and entertain each other. This is not to excuse Ferguson's behavior, but just to point out that this isn't a normal situation, and abnormal behavior comes out of it.

American Kickboxing Academy product Mike Swick will make a return to action for the first time in 18 months at UFC 134, as Sherdog.com reports that he will welcome Brazilian welterweight prospect Erick Silva to the UFC on the card.
A veteran of the first season of The Ultimate Fighter, Swick has been battling illnesses and injuries for the last several years, and due to that has been out of action since his February 2010 loss to Paulo Thiago at UFC 109. The loss was his second straight after posting a four fight winning streak since moving to the welterweight division three years ago.
Silva enters the UFC as one of the top prospects in the world at 170 lbs. The 26-year-old boasts a 12-1 record with one no contest, and is unbeaten in over four years. Of his 12 career wins, Silva has finished nine opponents and has seven submission wins to his credit.
UFC 134 takes place from the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on August 27, headlined by a Middleweight Championship bout between Anderson Silva and Yushin Okami.

Scott Coker announced on Saturday that the bout between Fedor Emelianenko and Dan Henderson on July 30 would be a catchweight fight at 220 lbs.
That came as news to Henderson.
Coker claimed in an interview with Ariel Helwani at MMAFighting.com that the bout agreement stated it was a 220 lb. catchweight, but Henderson took to Twitter on Saturday and was adamant that Coker was wrong.
"That's not what he told me," Henderson wrote. "[He's] incorrect. Ask him to show [the bout agreement] to you [because] the one we have doesn't say that [and] furthermore it was never discussed. What is the point?"
Now, MMAJunkie.com reports that Henderson is indeed correct and the fight will take place in the heavyweight division. It headlines an event from the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, Ill. on July 30, airing live on Showtime.

Season four finale in Bellator 45 brings 264,000 viewers, sets MTV2 record in key MMA demographic

After setting a record for MTV2's Saturday night timeslot with over 300,000 viewers last week for Bellator 44, Bellator Fighting Championships closed out their fourth season with their second strongest overall showing on the cable station this past Saturday night.
Bellator 45, which featured the season four featherweight tournament and light heavyweight tournament finals, brought in an average of 264,000, according to figures emailed to MMATorch on Tuesday.
Patricio "Pitbull" Freire and Christian M'Pumbu were the night's big winners, with Freire earning a second shot against Bellator Featherweight Champion Joe Warren with a decision win over Daniel Straus and M'Pumbu finishing Richard Hale in the third round to become the first Bellator Light Heavyweight Champion.
The two-hour telecast peaked with 360,000 viewers at 9:30PM ET, and the broadcast as a whole set a record in some key MMA demographics for MTV2. The broadcast brought season-high ratings in the men 18-34 (.4) and men 18-49 (.33) demographics, and in fact the rating was the highest for the men 18-49 demographic in the history of MTV2.
Bellator returns to MTV2 on June 25 with Bellator 46, kicking off their three event "Summer Series" with the quarterfinals of a summer featherweight tournament.
Penick's Analysis: The numbers stayed strong with their third straight unopposed week, and MTV2 is ecstatic with the numbers Bellator brings for this timeslot compared to what they had there before. But again, this is with no outside competition and the final two events of this season, and there's no telling where numbers will go from here. There was no rhyme or reason to Bellator's ratings in season four, which saw fluctuations between numbers like the last two weeks and barely scraping 100,000 viewers for others. A 12-week Saturday night season makes it really difficult for MMA fans to catch every event, but when there's no other competition from the MMA landscape they're able to get a bit of a boost. Still, while the ratings are excellent for the network, it remains to be seen how Bellator is handling the financial situation on their end, and whether those fluctuating numbers bring enough revenue for the organization to remain viable as they continue to run small venues with small gates.

July 30 Strikeforce bout between Dan Henderson and Fedor Emelianenko confirmed as a heavyweight fight, not 220 lb. catchweight

Scott Coker announced on Saturday that the bout between Fedor Emelianenko and Dan Henderson on July 30 would be a catchweight fight at 220 lbs.
That came as news to Henderson.
Coker claimed in an interview with Ariel Helwani at MMAFighting.com that the bout agreement stated it was a 220 lb. catchweight, but Henderson took to Twitter on Saturday and was adamant that Coker was wrong.
"That's not what he told me," Henderson wrote. "[He's] incorrect. Ask him to show [the bout agreement] to you [because] the one we have doesn't say that [and] furthermore it was never discussed. What is the point?"
Now, MMAJunkie.com reports that Henderson is indeed correct and the fight will take place in the heavyweight division. It headlines an event from the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, Ill. on July 30, airing live on Showtime.
Penick's Analysis: Coker was very clear in his interview with Ariel Helwani that Henderson's lawyer and agent Jordan Fagan, along with M-1 Global, were on board for the 220 lb. catchweight fight, but it turns out he was incorrect on this one. How that confusion came about is anyone's guess, but regardless the fight is happening, and it's coming to Showtime on July 30. Both are still likely to weigh around that 220 lbs. anyway, but there wasn't a real reason to have this fight be at catchweight when Henderson was willing to take it in the heavyweight division.
