Showtime Hits With UFC-Strikeforce Purchase, Misses With In-Cage Action
Overall, I thought Showtime did a solid job of handling the UFC's purchase of Strikeforce. But once it was time for the fighters to step into the cage, the coverage of Saturday night's biggest controversy -- the Gegard Mousasi vs. Keith Jardine draw -- left something to be desired.
Let's start with the good: Showtime handled the UFC's purchase of Strikeforce appropriately by tackling it at the outset. It's a major story that deserved the upfront treatment it got.

Daddy-to-be, Hominick looking to catch a break in and out of the cage
Jose Aldo is a bad, bad man. The dude who knocks him off his UFC featherweight perch will have to be a helluva fighter and probably a little bit lucky. In a game of inches, landing that perfect shot can't always be planned. Nor can life, that's why Mark Hominick needs to catch a break outside the Octagon as well.
The Canadian has the pressure of the world on him facing the UFC champ and doing it in front 55,000 faithful Canadian fans. Hominick faces Aldo at UFC 129 (9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT).
Check out MMAWeekly's Damon Martin, ProMMARadio's Larry Pepe and me break down the fight on RawVegas.
The last thing he needs to be thinking about is his wife in a hospital delivering their first child. Everything should be fine as long as the little girl doesn't come a week early. Hominick's wife, Ashley, is due on May 7.
Ashley will be in Toronto roughly 90 minutes from their hometown of Thamesford and the precautions have been taken.
"We have a doctor lined up (in Toronto) if she does go into labor," he said. "We have a pretty strong support system with my family. It's nice that the fight's literally an hour and a half drive away from where we live," Hominick told the Canadian Press.
Hominick (20-8, 3-0 UFC) admitted he's balancing a lot.
"I'm just trying to take it all in. This is an experience that I'll look back on and say, 'Wow, that was a crazy time,' especially with my wife being due," Hominick said. "Everyone in my life knows the opportunity that's in front of me, so it's been a huge, strong support system that I have behind me."
Hominick and trainer Shawn Tompkins feel, Aldo (18-1) has never been tested by a top-notch striker.
"I think I'm the guy to take this guy out," he said. "I really do think I have the skill set to beat him. The main thing is staying composed and sticking to the game plan," Hominick said.
Aldo has the reputation of being a great ground, but sounds willing to test Hominick on the feet.
"I feel it's a great fight," Aldo said through an interpreter. Two guys that are going to go out there and keep the fight standing and always be looking for that knockout."
Tompkins told us last month, no one has come forward against Aldo. That'll change Saturday night.

You've been answered, of course, by promotional materials that trumpet the accomplishments that make him a threat to Georges St-Pierre's seemingly immovable welterweight crown.
In our official event preview, MMAjunkie.com's Steven Marrocco examines whether Shields really has a chance. He also breaks down the rest of Saturday's UFC 129 record-breaking show.

ROUNDTABLE (pt. 1 of 2): Who should Nick Diaz fight next after defeating Paul Daley? Hansen, Amadi, Carter, Pelkey and Penick
|
RICH HANSEN, MMATORCH COLUMNIST
Nick Diaz needs to make his way to the UFC, because he's being wasted fighting against non-UFC welterweights. Penn, Alves, Koscheck, Fitch, Story, Ellenberger, Swick, Johnson... doesn't matter to me which one.
JASON AMADI, MMATORCH COLUMNIST
Nick Diaz has firmly cemented himself as one of the most exciting fighters in MMA, however the question now is whether or not he?s the best. It's time to fight a wrestler, and Tyron Woodley fits that bill. However, beyond that fight Zuffa would likely have to entertain sending over a few welterweights to challenge Diaz because StrikeForce is fresh out of welterweights, credible or otherwise.
ALVIN CARTER, MMATORCH SPECIALIST
Nick Diaz should defend his title against Tyron Woodley. Woodley is ready, and he is impressive. He is 8-0, a record that includes five submissions in a row (four of which came in the first round) and a TKO stoppage sandwiched between two decisions. Diaz might have to use more of his game with Woodley as both fighters are comfortable standing or on the ground.
MATT PELKEY, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

I'd love to see Nick Diaz vs. any top-10 UFC welterweight, but I'm afraid he's stuck fighting the Tyron Woodley's of the world until his contract runs out. Fulfilling Strikeforce contracts is the UFC's number one priority right now because they don't want any loose ends when its time to fold up the Strikeforce brand just like Affliction, Pride, and the WEC. The last thing the UFC needs is a breach of contract lawsuit mucking things up.
JAMIE PENICK, MMATORCH EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
It's probably going to end up being Tyron Woodley, but there are so many bigger and better fights for him on the UFC's welterweight roster. It may not be probable at this point that the UFC would bring him over for a fight in the Octagon, but that doesn't mean they won't entertain the idea of sending someone into Strikeforce instead. With that idea on the table, I'd like to see someone the likes of Josh Koscheck be sent over to give him the biggest and best opponent he's faced in the last five years. This is not meant to disparage the young and talented prospect in Woodley, not in the least; the simple fact of the matter is that, while Woodley is 8-0, Diaz is simply several steps above the opponents he has been fighting. Diaz should be fighting a higher level of competition than he's relegated himself to over the last several years, and Zuffa's acquisition of Strikeforce should allow for that to take place.

QUOTABLES: Pat Barry on doubting himself after win over Joey Beltran, preparing for groin shots from Cheick Kongo
|
[It] made me rethink every interview I've ever done where I'm like, 'If I punch you it's like getting shot, and kicking is like a grenade.' Nope. Apparently not. Standing across from Joey Beltran will make you doubt yourself. If this was UFC 1, with no time limit, Joey Beltran, 'The Mexecutioner,' would be the champion of the universe. Joey Beltran will kick your a** in 57 minutes...
[UFC matchmaker] Joe Silva called me real cool and casual. We were talking and he was like, 'So what do you think of Cheick Kongo?' I was like, 'Man, I don't care about Cheick Kongo. He ain't been performing. He ain't been doing his thing.' Then he was like, 'Okay good, you're going to fight him on [June] 26.' That's when I felt like, oh sh-t. Aw, man. I need more time...
He has been kneeing a lot of guys in the groin, a lot of testicle shots and all that. But the upside to that for me is, I only have one and it's really little. It hasn't even dropped yet, so there."
-Pat Barry talks to MMAFighting.com about his fight with Joey Beltran in January making him question his abilities, as well as his thoughts on his upcoming opponent, Cheick Kongo.
Penick's Analysis: Barry was hitting Beltran with everything he had, and Beltran's ability to take punishment was quite impressive. It says more about Beltran and his toughness, I believe, than it does about Barry's power or ability, but mentally it was clearly trying on Barry. His fight with Kongo should be another entertaining heavyweight scrap, where both will be looking to hurt the other on the feet. If Barry can avoid any unnecessary groin-area damage, he may be in good shape to pick up the biggest win of his career. It won't be an easy fight, and Kongo is a very tough opponent, but it should be a good test for Barry either way.

Cole Escovedo to make UFC debut against Renan Barao at UFC 130
|
According to a report from MMAJunkie.com, Escovedo will now meet Renan Barao on the May 28 card after Barao's initial opponent Demetrious Johnson was moved up the card to meet Miguel Torres.
Escovedo was the first Featherweight Champion in WEC history, and went 6-2 in eight fights in the organization prior to it being purchased by Zuffa in 2006. However, he has never appeared in a Zuffa owned organization.
He lost the title to Urijah Faber, and dropped consecutive fights after that to Jens Pulver and Antonio Banuelos. Since then, however, he's won six of eight fights. Most recently, he bounced back from two consecutive losses to Michael McDonald and Michihiro Omigawa with a submission win in a regional promotion in Utah.
Barao only loss came in his very first fight, and has since won 25 of 26 fights with one no contest. This is also his UFC debut, though he's won two fights under the Zuffa banner with consecutive submission wins in the WEC in 2010.
UFC 130 takes place from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on May 28, headlined by the UFC Lightweight Championship rematch between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard.
Link to Original Source Article
Penick's Analysis: This is a good late replacement fight for this card. Escovedo hasn't gotten much exposure on a major level in the U.S., and this is a big opportunity for him. Barao is a legitimately dangerous and talented opponent, however, and this will be a very tough fight for him. Still, on a month's notice this is a good fight to make.

Canadian promoter takes on ‘Big’ John McCarthy about refs receiving extra pay
It's always been one of the bizarre phenomenons at MMA events.
What other sport has fans that give raucous ovations to "name" referees? For some reason, many MMA fans enjoy seeing "Big" John McCarthy and Herb Dean and show them the love. Somehow we don't see that happening anytime soon at baseball game with "Cowboy" Joe West or in the NBA with Joey Crawford.
McCarthy recognizes this oddit and he along with certain promoters may be cashing in on it. That doesn't sit right with Canadian promoter Mark Pavelich. The MFC chief throws a lot of bull at the wall and generally none of it sticks, but this time, he may have uncovered a pretty serious issue.
Pavelich says promoters are paying some MMA referees extra "appearance" fees to work events.
"It's outrageous and absolutely inappropriate. These certain referees are charging anywhere from $5,000 to $10,000 just to show up, bark out a catchphrase, and supervise a fight. But these fees aren't being paid by any commission. They are paid by a show owner or promoter," Pavelich said in a recent MFC newsletter. "[...]
And how can you not call into question the ethics of these referees. Would you not expect their loyalties to be torn when some promoter is willing to pay them 10K, and that same referee is then calling the action when the promoter's top fighters are in action."
Pavelich says commissions need to lay down the law.
"There are a number of very good referees out there, including those that have worked recent MFC events. But even they shouldn't be allowed to just toss out a price tag, or have a commission toss out one for them. There should be a pay scale in place ? here's what you get paid (plus reasonable expenses) … take it or leave it," said Pavelich.
McCarthy responded to Pavelich on MMA.tv's Underground Forum and in doing so confirmed that he has received additional dollars to work events.
If I have a promoter contact me about working their show it is my right to ask for whatever fee I feel is fair. Most of the time that promoter is using my name to help promote their show and I should be compensated for that because it goes beyond the normal scope of the job. Now they are using you to help possibly sell tickets," said McCarthy.
In a sense McCarthy is right, that's not fair. But he also has the right to tell the promoter that his name can't be used in any promotional efforts to push the event.
"Have I ever made $10,000 to work a show, No. I have made different amounts of money throughout my career," McCarthy wrote. "Last night I worked a show and made $280 for the night."
McCarthy alleges that Pavelich is only pushing the issue as part of an agenda to help out a Canadian friend/official who's been left out of UFC 129 and several other big events in Canada.
Does anyone else see the potential problem here? In no way are we saying McCarthy, Dean or any of the other big-name referees would do a favor for a promoter or one of their star fighters, but anything that could potentially put any referee's integrity into question has to be stymied before the issue arises.

Florian asks White for another title shot while on TV
Kenny Florian will have his first fight at featherweight at UFC 131 against Diego Nunes, but he wants to have his plans set for the year. On national television, Florian had no qualms about asking the UFC for the next featherweight title shot after Jose Aldo and Mark Hominick's bout at UFC 129.
About 2:45 into Dana White's interview on "MMA Live," Florian, an analyst for the ESPN show, puts White on the spot. "Dana, if I get through Nunes and Aldo gets through Hominick, can
"As far as you getting through the title shot, everybody knows where you stand. You get in there, and if you make that weight, yeah. You're probably in for the next title shot," White said.
There are two obstacles standing in Florian's way. First, the weight cut will not be easy. Remember that Florian entered the UFC as a middleweight on the first season of "The Ultimate Fighter." Lightweight was clearly his most natural weight class. Losing another 10 lbs. will not be easy.
Secondly, Nunes shouldn't be overlooked. His last three wins include a decision over former WEC champ Mike Brown, and he is already comfortable at featherweight. Florian is also returning to the cage for the first time since August. A knee injury prevented him from a planned fight in January.
Another championship shot for Florian would be a change of tune for White. After Florian lost to Gray Maynard in August in a bout that decided the lightweight title shot, White accused Florian of choking in big fights. In addition to the Maynard loss, Florian also has lost in each of his lightweight title shots.
Perhaps this is why White told Florian that another bite at the championship apple is in the offing. This can be KenFlo's chance to redeem himself.

Belfort Versus Akiyama Booked For UFC 133
MMANEWS.COM Staff Writer</B><BR><BR>
After declaring himself fit to challenge anyone, Vitor Belfort (19-9) has an official opponent for his first fight since losing his middleweight title bid to Anderson Silva at UFC 126: Japanese import, Yoshihiro Akiyama (13-3-0-2). The two are now set to meet on the main card of UFC 133.<BR><BR>
Belfort has done an impressive job of rejuvenating his career since dropping south of the 205 pound mark. Over the last three years, Belfort has destroyed Terry Martin, Matt Lindland, and Rich Franklin, while losing only a single fight at 185 pounds, that being the first round trouncing delivered by longtime champion Anderson Silva just two months ago.<BR><BR>
Yoshihiro Akiyama on the other hand has experienced a bit of a career slide as of late. Since being signed by the UFC, Akiyama has compiled an unimpressive record of 1-2. His lone victory under the Zuffa owned promotion came against Alan Belcher in a fight that many believe should have been awarded in Belcher?s favor. Akiyama last competed at UFC 120, where he dropped a unanimous decision to brash Brit, Michael Bisping.<BR><BR>
UFC President Dana White made the news of Belfort?s return, and opponent known today while speaking with espn.co.uk. UFC 133 is scheduled for August 6th, at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.<BR><BR>

QUOTABLES: UFC Middleweight Champ Anderson Silva discusses disrespectful Chael Sonnen, has no desire for a rematch
|
-Chael Sonnen talked to Ariel Helwani at MMAFighting.com on Monday in a rare English-speaking interview without a translator and commented on the man who took him to the bring at UFC 117, Chael Sonnen.
Penick's Analysis: Because of how that first fight played out, there were a lot of calls for an immediate rematch prior to Sonnen's positive test for steroids from that fight. I was never in that camp, because it wasn't a close decision or a controversial stoppage or something that would have warranted the fight needing to happen right away. Business-wise it could have been huge, but Silva beat him decisively, even though he was well behind on the scorecards. Still, Silva will take the rematch if Sonnen wins a couple of fights and deems him worthy of a title shot. It's the situation he has right now with Okami, where the UFC has him as the number one contender but Silva doesn't feel he has anything to prove against him. But when the time comes that the UFC says "we want the rematch," we'll see Silva fight Sonnen again.

Andre Winner vs. Anthony Njokuani booked for UFC 132 in July
|
Winner, the Ultimate Fighter season nine runner-up, has gone 2-2 since losing to Ross Pearson in the season nine finals. The two losses have come in his last two fights, however, putting him in danger of being released with a third straight loss in the Octagon.
Njokuani, a multi-fight veteran of the UFC's former sister promotion World Extreme Cagefighting, has lost three of his last four fights under the Zuffa banner. He defeated Edward Faalaloto at WEC 52 in his final WEC appearance to snap a two-fight losing streak, but he was defeated by Edson Barboza in his UFC debut in March in the "Fight of the Night" at UFC 128.
UFC 132 takes place from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, headlined by the Bantamweight Championship bout between Dominick Cruz and Urijah Faber.
Penick's Analysis: This is a good lightweight matchup, but in such a crowded division the loser is almost assuredly going to find themselves released from the roster. Winner had a frustrating experience in his loss to Nik Lentz, but then went out and got submitted by Dennis Siver in his next bout. As for Njokuani, after a string of three "Knockout of the Night" wins in the WEC he was stopped twice in his next two fights. Each fighter is in desperate need of a win, and that should make for a heck of a fight in Las Vegas.

Didn't write much today. Spent the lion's share ticking, which is boring and not very fun, but thankfully the virus I was suffering from has run its course. It may have been several viruses. In fact, I may have been flash mobbed by day-glo toting viruses looking for a rave in my cerebrum. It certainly felt that way.
I did make great progress on my book, however. Not the sort of progress others have made in their mad, thousands of words, NaNoWriMo dash to December, but progress of the habit kind. Setting the challenge to write 50 WPD has helped me bump into my next obstacle: daily discipline.
50 words; such a simple task. I've written more than that in this post. However, getting in the fiction writing mode has been challenging. I only write when I am moved. This makes for passionate bursts of scintillating prose, but when writing is supposedly my intended life career, if I have no work ethic I might as well kiss good-bye any dreams of succeeding.
That is why 50 WPD is good training. There is a mental block between me and writing fiction?some deeply rooted, ADHD inspired hurdle. Once I sit down, I write more than 50 words, but for some reason I just can't sit down.
Too wiggly, I suppose.
I clear this hurdle, and I can take on the world. So I'm strapping my track shoes on tight and stretching for the big meet. I need this first draft finished by Thanksgiving if I want something submittable by my birthday on December 23rd.

Strikeforce: Shinya Aoki Easily Submits Lyle Beerbohm
But it was a bit of a surprise just how easy Aoki made it: The whole fight lasted just a minute and a half, and Beerbohm all but invited Aoki to submit him with an odd game plan: Beerbohm charged forward and pressed Aoki against the fence in the opening seconds of the first round, a clear mistake that put Aoki in his wheelhouse when they fell to the ground.
