Tompkins interview: Hard feelings in camps and no future with Belfort

MMA trainer is really no different than being a head coach in any other sport. Different fighters need to be handled differently and when there's a beef between teammates someone has to be the boss. Shawn Tompkins knows what Greg Jackson is going through right now. Jackson's Submissions Fighting appears to be splintering a bit over the Rashad Evans-Jon Jones fight.

At TapouT Las Vegas, Tompkins joined me to talk about camp politics. He was also forthcoming about one of his old students Vitor Belfort, saying he'll never work with the UFC middleweight title contender again.

UFC FIGHT NIGHT 24 PREVIEW: Penick's fight picks for Davis vs. Nogueira headlined event from Seattle

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

UFC_Fight_Night_24_poster_180_2.jpg
UFC Fight Night 24 takes place from Seattle's KeyArena tomorrow night, airing live on Spike TV (and with a number of fights coming to Facebook.com). It's an exciting card that should provide a lot of entertainment during the broadcast, and here are my picks for the fights in the UFC's first ever trip to Washington state.

Antonio Rogerio Nogueira vs. Phil Davis: Nogueira's a longtime veteran that has found a bit of kryptonite in recent fights against high-level wrestlers. He squeaked out a decision against Jason Brilz, and narrowly lost one to Ryan Bader in 2010, and now he's got another high level wrestler to face off with in Davis. His striking game is a definite advantage in his favor, but Davis comes into this fight the favorite for a reason. His wrestling game, transition game and his penchant for attempting submissions should allow him to control at least two rounds, and I like Phil Davis by decision.

Anthony "Rumble" Johnson vs. Dan Hardy: This is likely to be a slug fest for the first round, but there's no telling what Johnson's cardio is going to be like after a 15 month layoff and a horrendous weight cut. I hope he at least makes weight for the fight, but that's going to be a detriment for him in this one. Ultimately, while both hit really hard, I think Hardy's going to be smarter than to step into the power that Johnson has, and Johnson's not easy to finish. So I've got Dan Hardy by decision in an entertaining fight.

Amir Sadollah vs. DaMarques Johnson: Johnson's coming into this one as a late replacement, but I think he's a very big challenge for Sadollah in this fight. Sadollah is 4-2 in the UFC, and has a better striking game than Johnson at this point, but Johnson's ground game is underrated, and I think he'll get the fight there enough and control enough of the action on the ground to win two rounds in this one. DaMarques Johnson by decision.

Leonard Garcia vs. Chan Sung Jung: This fight won't be anywhere near as fun as the first one, but it should still provide an entertaining fight. Both fighters have talked about changing their styles, but honestly it's likely to be a similar "hit-and-get-hit-back" type fight for both fighters. I thought Jung won the first one, but with how we've seen things go in Garcia's fights I don't trust the judges to give us anything but Leonard Garcia by decision.

=====FACEBOOK PRELIMS=====

Alex Caceres vs. Mackens Semerzier: Semerzier arguably won his last fight against Cub Swanson, and though he also lost to Javier Vasquez by submission and Deividas Taurosevicius he's a very dangerous fight for Caceres. Caceres was a character on TUF, but I don't see Bruce Leroy taking it to Semerzier here. Mackens Semerzier by submission in the second.

Jon Madsen vs. Mike Russow: Russow's got a ridiculous chin as seen in his come from behind win over Todd Duffee last May. But Madsen is far too good in his top control game. He turned on the ground and pound against Yvel, and while he'll do the same here I can't see him finishing Russow. Jon Madsen by decision.

John Hathaway vs. Kris McCray: Hathaway's hype train came to a halt against Mike Pyle last fall, but he's still a good welterweight prospect. McCray's got a good wrestling game, but I don't think it'll be enough against the Brit looking to make an impression after a disappointing performance. John Hathaway by TKO in the second round.

Michael McDonald vs. Edwin Figueroa: Figueroa stepped in on short notice, but the 20-year-old McDonald is a buzzsaw. This should be a showcase win for him on Facebook. Michael McDonald by TKO in the first round.

Sean McCorkle vs. Christian Morecraft: Morecraft hits hard, McCorkle's got a good submission game. Haven't seen much of Morecraft on the ground, and though he can hurt McCorkle in this one he could still get caught. Coin flip I'll take Sean McCorkle by submission in the first round.

=====PRELIMINARY CARD QUICK PICKS=====

* Johny Hendricks over T.J. Waldburger via TKO in the second

* Mario Miranda over Aaron Simpson via decision

* Nik Lentz over Waylon Lowe via decision

I Found Out My Husband Is Gay

I repeatedly receive questions from agitated wives who feel traumatized when they learn that their husband is homosexual. The length of their marriages range from a few years to 20 and 30 years together. Many have children, of differing ages, with their husbands. They either accidentally find out about their spouse or the husband steps "out of the closet" to reveal his sexual orientation. Always, this is met with shock, despair and betrayal. In a very few cases, partners knew about this even before marriage. In these types of cases, conscious and mutual decisions were made about marriage, monogamy, and children.

ROUNDTABLE: Where is Phil Davis' place in the light heavyweight division after his UFC Fight Night 24 win over "Lil Nog"? Hansen, Hobaugh, Hyden, Bacior, Perez, Williams and Penick

UFC_Fight_Night_24_poster_180_10.jpg
Where do you put Phil Davis' place in the light heavyweight division after his win over Antonio Rogerio Nogueira?

RICH HANSEN, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

Davis is a notch ahead of Nog, right in there with Bader. He's not elite yet, and I think his fight with Nogueira should stop people from calling for Jones - Davis anytime soon. I think a Davis - Griffin fight makes sense for both Davis and Griffin.

ERIC HOBAUGH, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

Phil Davis is in the top fifteen for sure. Nogueira is the first fighter he has faced in the top ten. He needs a solid win over another top ten fighter to himself be considered a top ten fighter. Even with his perfect record, five straight wins in the UFC, and wins over Tim Boetsch, Brian Stann, and now Nogueirahe is not yet in the top ten.

FRANK HYDEN, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

Well, I think that Davis has a lot of potential and deserves a step up in competition. Beating Nogueira is a nice feather in his cap, but he has a long way to go if he wants to compete with the best in the division. That will come with time, though. The next guy I'd put him in there with is Ryan Bader. The best way to accelerate a guy's learning curve is to throw him into the deep end. You don't do that right away, but you put him in there against Bader. Then, if he wins, you put him up against a Lyoto Machida or Quinton Jackson, and you get a real sense of where he's at. A match against Forrest Griffin or Rich Franklin would be okay, but I don't think that would really get Davis anywhere.

MIKE BACIOR, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

Well, my measuring stick is that I think he did better against Lil Nog then Ryan Bader did. So I would have him slightly above Bader, who is probably Top 12 or 13. I think he could give some of the bigger names fit, but he needs to get his striking more technically sound in order to become a true force in the division and break into the Top 10.

ANWAR PEREZ, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

I don't place Phil Davis too high in the division at all. Yes, he did step up to face a veteran like Rogerio Nogueira on short notice, and defeated him, but he's just another fighter to me. A true test would be a definitive top 10 fighter, even someone like Forrest Griffin or Rich Franklin, or if the UFC really wants to fast track Davis, a fight against Shogun Rua. Either way, he just needs to do what he can, keep improving, and then by the end of the year, he could become a top 10, if not top five, fighter in the division.

ALEX WILLIAMS, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

Phil Davis' win over Minotoro didn't do much for me. In fact, for those, like me, who predicted he might provide a challenge to Jon Jones at some point, this victory showed that he has a long ways to go before a Jones fight would be competitive. He's not a Top 10 fighter yet.

JAMIE PENICK, MMATORCH EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

Expectations for Davis heading into the Nogueira fight last weekend were too high. Nogueira is a very good fighter, and he's been a difficult challenge for a lot of people, and even in his losses for the most part he hasn't been dominated. Davis was as successful if not more than Bader against Nogueira, and that's a great win on his record. That said, he's got improving to do. He's still growing and developing as a fighter, and he'd be the first to admit as much. He has the potential to be one of the top fighters in the division, but his whole game hasn't come around to that point just yet. With the win over Nogueira he's absolutely a top 15 guy, perhaps fringe top 10, but he needs to continue improving and developing before he gets thrust into the deep waters of the light heavyweight division. He doesn't need to be fast tracked. There's time to bring him along the right way and to allow him to get better fundamentally so that when he gets to the top end of the 205 lb. division he's fully prepared.

What an Apparent Poor Sense of Direction Revealed about the Mind

I confess that for a good part of my early 20's I believed I had a poor sense of direction. Further, this belief often helped create my getting turned around and sometimes getting lost. It was downright irritating, pathetic and mysterious all at once. Over time, it got old, very old and I had had enough. So one day I decided that, in fact, I had an excellent sense of direction, especially as I would use resources like maps, especially Thomas guides, which I purchased and used for just such support.

Anthony Johnson swears he'll make weight for UFC Fight Night 24 bout with Dan Hardy, reportedly began camp around 230 lbs.

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

LogoUFC_150_847.jpg
One of the storylines coming into this Saturday's UFC Fight Night 24 events is the return of Anthony "Rumble" Johnson, and whether or not he'll be able to get down to the welterweight limit following a 15 month layoff.

By his own admission this week, Johnson allowed his weight to get out of control while out with injury, and according to a report from ESPN's Josh Gross, Johnson ballooned up to the 230s in his weight as late as eight weeks ago when he began his camp for his bout with Dan Hardy on Saturday's card in Seattle.

"I was out that year and it did some damage to me," Johnson said. "I let myself get out of shape. I put that weight on. That was my fault being lazy. The only thing I was thinking about was living the life and having a good time. I'm injured. I'm going to party and have a good time. Then I just finally sucked it up and said I need to get back into the gym, because I don't want to kill myself [in the gym] to fight."

Johnson has missed weight twice in the UFC, both times failing to come anywhere near the 170 lb. limit. Back in 2007, he missed weight by 6 and a half pounds for a bout with Rich Clementi, and then in October of 2009 he missed weight by 6 lbs. for a bout with Yoshiyuki Yoshida. He had attempted to cut 50 pounds over a matter of weeks for that fight, and is in a similar situation here.

Of course, he's assuring fans and the UFC, as well as Hardy, that he's on track to make weight, but until he steps on the scale on Friday it will remain in question. And though he continues to say 170 lbs. is his home, his natural size is likely to necessitate a move up in divisions sooner rather than later.

Link to Original Source Article

Penick's Analysis: Missing weight to the levels that Johnson has done on two occasions isn't acceptable, and hopefully he can get himself to the one pound allowance for this fight on Saturday night. It's not fair to his opponents when he arguably should be fighting a weight class above if he doesn't get himself all the way down to the weight they also need to come in at. It's a little shocking that he was 60 lbs. above this weight limit when he started camp, and though it's not impossible to cut down that much over an eight week camp, it's not necessarily a good thing for him either. He really needs to put serious consideration into a move up to middleweight, because unlike another large welterweight in Thiago Alves, he's also got more height to go with his frame. It's a move he should probably make, but for this weekend, for Dan Hardy and for the UFC hopefully he does what he's supposed to and makes weight on Friday afternoon.

Dana White UFC 128 vlogs: GSP says it’s mostly mental for Jones tonight

A trip to the New York area always makes for interesting material on a Dana White vlog. The UFC president and his cameraman Eliot are in the midst of the madness during the 250th Annual St. Patrick's Day Parade in New York.

White is also seen taking Chuck Liddell and Georges St. Pierre to the New York Knicks-Memphis Grizzlies game on Thursday night. GSP is asked for a pick, says he's biased because they're training partners and goes with Jones. But he did point out that the fight is mostly mental for the 23-year-old. This early title opportunity for Jones is reminiscent of a 22-year-old GSP getting a crack at Matt Hughes back at UFC 50 in 2004. GSP lost via armbar and has always he said he wasn't ready mentally at that time for such a big fight.

Another teammate, Rashad Evans also makes his pick on the vlog and chooses Jones by second round finish. Evans and Jones have appeared to be at odds through the media the last few weeks.

The UFC uploaded White's third UFC 128 vlog with a view from the stage during yesterday's weigh-in.

During the opening seconds of the video, White meets with New York-area hero Joe Lozito. Lozito helped the NYPD catch a serial stabber last month on the subway by using a technique he said he learned from watching mixed martial arts.

Don't Expect Coaching Confrontations on TUF 13

by Michael David SmithJunior dos SantosDuring the 12-season run of The Ultimate Fighter, many of the most memorable moments have involved the show's coaches. Ken Shamrock and Tito Ortiz wanted to kill one another. So did Rashad Evans and Rampage Jackson. Josh Koscheck spent most of his time on the show trying to get under Georges St. Pierre's skin. Multiple coaches have broken the door that leads into the Ultimate Fighter gym.

But from the way Brock Lesnar and Junior dos Santos are talking, moments like those are going to be lacking on the 13th season of the show, which begins on Wednesday night. On a conference call to promote their show, Lesnar and dos Santos were nothing but respectful toward each other, and they indicated that they both prefer to save any negative energy they feel for each other until they fight in June.

Evans unloads, suggests Jones and Jackson are backstabbers

After storming to the UFC light heavyweight title, Jon Jones is being held up as god's gift to the MMA world. That's not the way Rashad Evans sees him.

"People want to say 'oh my God Jon is this and that' but Jon Jones is Jon Jones to me. He's another fighter I have to face. I've seen them all and I've trained with the best," Evans told Duane Finley of BloodyElbow.com. "I've seen all the shades of greatness and how this one was supposed to do this and this one was supposed to do that. It's all the same and it doesn't even matter."

He thinks Jones is not be to be trusted and has the feel of a master manipulator.

"I feel disrespected on many levels and the worst part is that it comes from people who I felt were like family. I would have done anything for Greg Jackson, and I would still do anything for Greg Jackson but I felt disrespected beyond belief," Evans said. "I feel disrespected by Jon because when I think about when we trained or when we were chilling, was the [expletive] even real? Or was he just trying to be a master manipulator and try to manipulate the situation so he could get what he wanted out of it?"

Evans is steaming about the fact that he welcomed Jones, another light heavyweight title contender into Jackson's Submission Fighting camp in Albuquerque, NM, with open arms. It's put Evans in a position that forces him to leave the only camp he's known since 2005.

Evans became so wary of Jones and Greg Jackson that he began training a lot more in Denver at the Grudge Training Center, a partner of sorts with the Jackson's camp in New Mexico.

"I told him straight up that I didn't like it. I told him that the kid was talented and that the sky was the limit with him but that was the type of guy I wanted to fight not train with. Greg came back saying, 'No, no, no this will be just like you and Keith [Jardine] where he will be just like a brother.' I still told him that I didn't want to do that," Evans said. "Then Greg said if that situation ever did arise between Jones and I that he would have to turn the fight down because that's how it works. He would have to turn down the fight with me so that way I wouldn't be put in a position where I looked like a punk. That's how it works in the Greg Jackson system."

Evans is annoyed with Jackson because he's essentially removed himself from the beef.

"You can't say you are not going to have anything to do with it when you are a big part of the reason why the situation originated," Evans fired. "That's like spilling a glass of milk and then walking away and saying that you don't want to have anything to do with it. You [expletive] spilled the milk...so you're at least going to help clean it up right?"

Evans didn't like the way Jones opened the door to a possible fight during the UFC 128 prefight. Jones said he was cutting off all questions about Evans and didn't feel like his teammate and friend was pulling for him to win.

"When the first opportunity came and he said that he would fight me if Dana said so, that to me stung more than anything. He said that he didn't want to lose his job and look man, the UFC isn't going to fire anyone because they are turning down fights," Evans said. "[...] Then he comes across on national TV and says that he will fight Rashad if Dana White tells me to and I felt so [expletive] utterly disrespected."

"I mean it's one thing to say something in an interview but the least you could have picked up the phone and been like, "man I did an interview today and they kind of put me on the spot with a rough question and I answered it this way." At least give me the heads up so that way I know and not look at it if he's Judas or something. You know who Judas is? That interview was some backstabbing [expletive] but now it's like whatever because now I know the game he is playing."

Evans takes nothing away from Jones' game, but his character ... is another issue.

"Now the question is would Jon Jones be an animal had he not trained with Greg Jackson? Yes he would've. The learning rate may not have been as fast because training with Greg allowed Jon access to train with the best in the world. Jon is hands down [expletive] phenomenal. The kid is amazing and there is no doubt about that. There is no shame in my game for saying because the kid is very good but his skills excelled much quicker because of Jackson's," Evans said. "But if Jon Jones down the road goes somewhere else for a camp and then has a great fight and an opportunity arises do you really think he's going to go back to Greg Jackson? No. So then Greg lost on two fronts and for what?"

According to Evans, Jones may feel the same sting down the road when he finally suffers a legitimate loss and needs a helping hand to get back on his feet.

"People are touting Jon around like he's Neo from the Matrix. That's all good and dandy but be there for the kid when the kid falls. Be there to pick him back up rather than turn their back on him like they did to Machida. Lyoto loses and all of a sudden he sucks. No he doesn't [expletive] suck it's just the way the game goes."

The Jones-Evans matchup probably won't materialize until the summer. That's a lot of time for Evans to unleash plenty of mental warfare. In fact, it's already started.

Nobody is supreme in this game and that is what makes mixed martial arts what it is today. Nobody is the absolute best. Anybody can get beat by anybody on any given day."

UFC releases Chris Camozzi, Rob Kimmons, Dave Branch and Todd Brown following recent losses

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

LogoUFC_150_846.jpg
A number of fighters have gotten their walking papers from the UFC following recent losses, as several published reports state that Chris Camozzi, Rob Kimmons, Dave Branch and Todd Brown have all been released from their UFC contracts.

Camozzi was released following a loss to Kyle Noke by submission at UFC 127 in Australia, and though it was only his first loss in three fights in the organization, the UFC cut him. Camozzi wrote about the release on his official website.

"According to the UFC the issue is less about my performance (they offered to give me a recommendation) and more to do with an overloaded roster and not enough fights for us under contract," Camozzi wrote. "This has nothing to do with the recent merger... Right now I will move on and look to keep improving my skills and search for a new organization to call 'home.' Wherever that may be, I will always bring the best fights I can and have in the past. I'd like to thank all the fans for their continued support. You all make this sport worthwhile."

Kimmons was finished by Dong Yi Yang at UFC on Versus 3 earlier this month, and with it being his third loss in four fights and bringing his record in the UFC to 3-4, the cut came down. Kimmons' tenure with the organization lasted almost three years, but the longtime veteran will now need to work his way back.

Branch went 2-2 in four fights in the UFC, bookending two decision wins with stoppage losses. After a debut slam knockout loss to Gerald Harris, Branch defeated Tomasz Drwal and Rich Attonito in consecutive fights. However, a submission loss to Rousimar Palhares at UFC on Versus 3 has led to his release.

Brown made two appearances in the Octagon, but lost to both Tim Boetsch and Igor Pokrajac. The most recent loss also took place at UFC on Versus 3, and he'll need to climb back up the ladder with a couple of wins to get a call back.

Cremation And Funeral Ceremony ? Is It Acceptable?

Cremation, as a last stage of letting go of the dead body, has been done for centuries now. For some, it’s still not an option, yet for a lot of cultures, it is actually widely accepted. Alright , so what really takes place if the remaining family prefers cremation for their dear departed? It is [...]

The Sky's the Limit This Month

Chinese food has given me a green light to rock this month. Too bad there's only 4 days left.I received a magical fortune two days ago. It informed me that my month was going to rock. There were only four days left to the month, so I was left wondering how I was going to make that happen over a weekend. Of course, the whole thing was silly. My month had already rocked.

Aside from a productive month writing, a wee bit of drawing, and being listed as one of 6 Awesome Adults with ADHD over at wegohealth.com, I had an opportunity to attend the Superstars Writing Seminar and took it.

My life has been permanently enriched. My eyes have been opened. I was doing everything all wrong, yet, miraculously, I came away enthusiastic, not devastated.

Something about being in the presence of other would-be authors, as well as successful authors who share their experiences openly, was a heady mix for me. Almost euphoric.

Here are some highlights:
  • Kevin Anderson's 11 tips on successful writing was worth every cent I spent attending the seminar. If I had heard those tips last year, I might have finished my book by my birthday as I had planned.
  • Telling people in a forum to come up and talk to me was not desperate, as one author (perhaps jokingly) informed me, but brilliant. I met so many people because I did that.
  • Talking with strangers wasn't as painful as I had feared, though I don't know how the experience was for those on the receiving end.
  • Don't have lunch with Eric Flint and two authors from the Grantville Gazette if you have only read one of Eric's books. Your mind will swim during the discussions of wooden tanks and other anachronistic minutiae.
  • Rebecca Moesta has ADHD and writes books for a living, so there was proof for me that it could be done.
  • Sitting in the back of the room to make frequent exits to prevent the onset of ticking worked phenomenally well. It also helped offset ADHD boredom whenever I got fidgety.

Although I took something away from every guest author, Kevin's tips were truly the most impactive for me. They built on a discussion I had with Carol Lynch Williams a week before. Basically, because I edited while I wrote, and because I wrote without an outline, I was making more work for myself. I'd finish one chapter, come up with cool ideas in the next chapter that would demand revisions of the previous chapter, then write another new chapter that would demand revisions in the previous chapters, etc. As the chapters stacked up, revising would take longer. I was heading nowhere fast.

I knew this could not possibly be how books were written.

Kevin's tips, succinctly boiled down as bullet points for a presentation, took me to the next level. I needed to dare to be bad, I needed to separate editing and writing, and I needed to utilize whatever time I had available to me. I always tell my family at there is no Golden Moment. We must carve time out of our days to do the things we want, not wait for spare time to arrive. I needed to apply my own advice to writing.

Over the next few weeks I will go over the different things I learned, but for now I am fired up with focus. The conference didn't concentrate on the elements of craft. It honed in on the elements of productivity and application. It was perfect for a frazzled mind such as mine. If I can swing it, I will definitely attend the conference again next year in Las Vegas. In the meantime I may only have a day and a half left to my month, but the sky's the limit so I expect good things?for this month & beyond.

Follow me on Twitter for my ADHD escapades at @SplinteredMind or my novel writing project over at @DouglasCootey. And if you're a glutton for punishment you can friend me on Facebook as well.

Tibau downs Pellegrino in UFC 128 Facebook opener

It was strength against strength as Kurt Pellegrino faced Gleison Tibau. The UFC veterans are both accomplished grapplers and pretty much nullified each other for 15 minutes, but it was Tibau who was a little bit stronger down the stretch when he was able to score a pair of takedowns in the final two minutes.

The Brazilian walked away with a split decision victory, 29-28, 29-28 and 28-29, in the first fight of UFC 128's Facebook broadcast from Newark, N.J.

After a dead even first round, Pellegrino landed the biggest punch of the fight. With 3:10 left in the second, the New Jerseyan drilled Tibau (22-7, 8-5 UFC) with a right hand that buckled his legs. He followed that up with another big right, then picked up Tibau and slammed him to the floor. Tibau was clearly stunned but Pellegrino (16-6, 7-5 UFC) couldn't land a fight ending shot and couldn't pass guard to get to side control or the mount. All the work on top, may have tired out Pellegrino for the final round.

Tibau was the fresher, more poised fighter over the final five minutes. He held his hands close to his face and landed some nice shots to mark up Pellegrino under his left eye.

Pellegrino got sloppy with his right hand and was flailing a bit. Tibau scored a pivotal takedown with two minutes left in the fight and then another with 40 seconds left. That sealed it for Tibau. With the victory, Tibau avoided two straight losses while Pellegrino suffered his second straight defeat.

Pyle edges Almeida behind some big knees

This matchup was almost identical to the previous fight. Ricardo Almeida and Mike Pyle are dynamite ground artists. The Brazilian may be more decorated on the international scene, but Pyle is a gritty MMA veteran, who's pretty solid in all facets of the game.

Pyle, the better conditioned fighter throughout and slicker on the feet, rolled to a unanimous decision victory, 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28.

Pyle's game plan was to keep things on the feet. On two occasions, he dumped Almeida to the mat and basically walked away asking the referee to stand Almeida back up. Pyle (21-7, 4-2 UFC) never landed anything huge but was effective with some knees as Almeida (13-5, 6-5 UFC) shot for takedowns.

Pyle's takedown defense was excellent and when he did go down, he got up quickly. This is a huge win for Pyle, who waited a long time to get to the big show. The 35-year-old has now won three straight with the promotion.

After dropping down from 185 pounds, many thought Almeida would be a force at welterweight. It hasn't worked out for "Big Dog" who's just 2-2 at 170 pounds.

UFC 128 undercard (Courtesy MMAjunkie):

Erik Koch def. Raphael Assuncao via KO (punch) - Round 1, 2:32

Nick Catone def. Costantinos Philippou via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Joseph Benavidez def. Ian Loveland via unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27, 30-27)

UFC Fight Night 24: Anthony Johnson Beats Dan Hardy

by Michael David SmithAnthony Johnson is back in the Octagon after an absence of more than a year, and he looks great.

Johnson, who had been sidelined since 2009 with a knee injury, stepped up and destroyed former No. 1 welterweight contender Dan Hardy Saturday at UFC Fight Night 24.

For Johnson, it was a big win that shows that when he's healthy and in shape, he's a force to be reckoned with at 170 pounds. For Hardy, the showed, a year after he lost his welterweight title fight to Georges St. Pierre, that he still doesn't have much in the way of takedown defense or ability to fight off his back. Any good wrestler is going to give Hardy problems until he shores up those weaknesses.

Thiago Silva's Sample 'Inconsistent With Human Urine,' Says NSAC

Filed under:

The urine sample Thiago Silva submitted for testing prior to UFC 125 was "inconsistent with human urine," according to a complaint filed by the Nevada State Athletic Commission on Tuesday.

NSAC executive director Keith Kizer sent MMA Fighting an e-mail outlining the factual allegations against Silva, who now stands accused of submitting "an adulterated and/or substituted specimen for testing for the Urinalysis" prior to his decision win over Brandon Vera in Las Vegas on January 1.

Warren vs. Galvao, Makovsky vs. Robichaux, featherweight semifinals official for Bellator 41 in Arizona

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Logo_Bellator_150_264.jpg
Bellator Fighting Championships officials have officially announced the previously reported pairings for the season four featherweight tournament semifinals at Bellator 41, and in addition to those two fights, they have announced a pair of non-title fights for the event from two of their champions.

Bellator Featherweight Champion Joe Warren will meet WEC veteran Marcos "Louro" Galvao, while Bellator Bantamweight Champion Zack Makovsky meets 11-0 Strikeforce vet Chad "Robo" Robichaux in non-title action on the card.

Then, the semifinals for the featherweight tournament take place as Patricio "Pitbull" Freire meets Wilson Reis and Kenny Foster meets Donald Strauss. The event takes place at the Cocopah Resort and Casino in Yuma, Ariz. on April 16, airing live on MTV2.

"As an MMA fan, I can't wait for this event," said Bellator Chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney. "Both Super Fights and Semi-finals should be spectacular fights. And, Cocopah Casino's outdoor venue is an amazing venue for MMA. We've wanted to bring an event to Arizona for some time. Overall, this should be a great live event on MTV2."

‘Mr. Wonderful’ vlogs: Phil Davis is NOT Jon Jones

Phil Davis has a chance to explode into the mainstream tomorrow night at Ultimate Fight Night 24 (Spike 10 p.m. ET/PT).

In the days leading up to his fight against veteran Antonio "Rogerio" Nogueira., the "Mr. Wonderful" crew put together a series of vlogs to track his every move.

Because he's African-American with a decorated amateur wrestling background, he's often compared to Jon Jones. Davis and his boys have a running joke about being asked Jones questions in every interview (7:05 mark above)

In vlog 2 (below), Brandon Vera touches on the obvious when it comes to the Jones comparisons. Vera jokes about Davis being a great athlete (7:45 mark). He also says, he loves "Lil' Nog," but the PRIDE veteran could be in trouble versus Davis.

"His biggest strength is his wrestling and his wrist control. There's no way to prepare for it," Vera said (8:30 mark). [...] For sure, I think Phil's gonna win. I feel bad for saying that. I feel bad for Lil' Nog. I love you Lil' Nog, but I just don't think that you're gonna beat Phil Davis. Davis is on fire right now. He's on right now, he's rough."

Davis' training home in San Diego, Alliance Train Center, is closely tied to Nogueira's home, Blackhouse MMA.

[...] "At first when I heard about [Davis facing Nogueira] I was kind of sad because we're all training partners and we're friends. But it's business, trying to make that check. Trying to make that extra money. MMA is a sport. This is our job. This is what we do. People gotta eat, we're in a recession," said Vera.

Check out vlog four where Davis talks about training with former opponent Alexander Gustafsson. The vlog crew also captured scenes from Davis' appearance on Seattle's NBC television affiliate KING-5. Reporter Christie Johnson (@cjohnsonking5) does a nice job mounting Davis and slapping on an armbar (5:05 mark).

Hours before the biggest fight of his life, Jones subdues a robber

Eat your heart out Bob Reilly. Mixed martial arts is a lot more than a money grab viewed by savage fans; it can be a real life saver. Saturday afternoon in the streets of Paterson, N.J., Jon Jones and his trainers applied their gym techniques when they spotted a robber, chased him down and subdued him.

Thanks to Tracy Lee for the tip, photo link and video below

Jones, who was scheduled tofight Saturday evening in Newark for the UFC light heavyweight title, was on his way to meditate in front of a waterfall in Northern New Jersey. Jones, along with Greg Jackson and Mike Winkeljohn, spotted the suspect breaking into a car and stealing some objects. According to the account given to Yahoo!'s Kevin Iole by Jackson, the group shouted at the robber and he took off.

Jones, Jackson and Winkeljohn pursued him on foot. The robber eventually fell and Jones, the youngest of the group at 23, caught up to the robber and tripped him to the ground again. Jackson said that Jones "foot swept" the suspect.

With the robber on the ground, Jackson began yelling to his fighter to stay away. Once the trainers caught up to robber, he tried to get up. Jackson said he "double-legged" him and jumped on top applying an arm bar. Winkeljohn went for the other arm to make sure he didn't have a weapon. In the scuffle, the robber was bloodied. The trainers said some blood got on their pants. Shortly afterward, the police arrived to arrest the suspect.

Less than an hour after the incident, Tracy Lee spoke with Jackson.

This is the second time in the last month an MMA-related move was used in a high-profile story to subdue a criminal. Joe Lozito, New York-area laborer, tackled an alleged murderer on a New York subway.

Reilly is the New York assemblyman leading the crusade to keep MMA events out of New York State. The ban by New York is a big reason why the UFC has placed several events just a few miles away across the Hudson River in Newark's Prudential Center. Jones faced Mauricio Rua -- and beat him with a third-round TKO -- in the main event of UFC 128, stepping into theOctagon roughly 7 1/2 hours after his run-in with the robber.

Jackson mentioned that Jones eventually reached that Paterson-area waterfall.

"It was an incredibly beautiful waterfall," said Jackson.
