Frank Mir says Alistair Overeem has little chance of staying on his feet against Brock Lesnar

Frank Mir says Alistair Overeem has little chance of staying on his feet against Brock LesnarWhen fellow fighters can't decide how a big tilt is going to shake out, you've got something big on the horizon.

Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal says Alistair Overeem has a solid shot of stopping Brock Lesnar's powerful takedowns. Frank Mir, a former opponent of Lesnar, says Overeem will be like a fish out of water at UFC 141 this Friday in Las Vegas.

Watch UFC 141 right here on Yahoo! Sports

If Overeem sprawls or tries to knee, it'll do him no good.

"Brock doesn't shoot that low. He'll put his forehead in your chest, and he's going to run you through. If he's not able to take you down with that initial blast, he's going to run you against the cage," Mir told "The MMA Insiders" on ESPN1100/98.9 FM in Las Vegas. "Then he's going to rip your legs out from under you. Now, you should have gotten taken down in the middle of the area, but instead, you've been taken down against the cage [where it is more dangerous]. Speaking from experience, that sucks."

Mir, was a state champion high school wrestler in Nevada. He was helpless on the ground, crunched against the cage. Overeem is about the same size as Mir. Is he stronger, with better technique? We may find out Friday night.

"Now, you have a guy who is not a black belt in jiu-jitsu and who is not a wrestling All-American who is going to be able to get back to his feet, so what does he do?" Mir said.

Mir said Overeem's background indicates little to say that he'll get back to his feet. He also worries about all the extra mass Overeem has added over the years.

"Are you going to try to tell me he's going to wrestle with a national champion wrestler for five minutes? His cardio is going to suck [after wrestling with Lesnar for a while]. I've seen guys with muscles like that, and that's why he slows down," said Mir.

Overeem has to catch Lesnar in the first 90 seconds or he's got little shot.

Not only did Mir question Overeem's chances to survive grappling, but he's not overly impressed with the guy that some say is the best striker in the heavyweight division. Lesnar may even do some damage standing. Mir pointed out that Overeem was hit a lot in his fight against Fabricio Werdum and tired badly half way through the fight.

Long national nightmare is over: Lesnar vs. Overeem on for UFC 141

Any worries about the main event for UFC 141 were quelled by a tweet from UFC president Dana White.

Long national nightmare is over: Lesnar vs. Overeem on for UFC 141

Alistair Overeem was granted a conditional license for his bout with Brock Lesnar in Las Vegas after the Nevada Athletic Commission was unhappy with Overeem not taking pre-fight drug tests to their satisfaction. He had to take another test, but now that he has passed it, next week's fight is on.

Overeem started his training for Lesnar in Las Vegas, but moved back to his native Holland when his mother's cancer became a concern. He said during Monday's press call that there have been distractions, but he knows how to deal with them.

"It was a distraction but, I've been through a lot in my career. I have like 65, 70 fights," Overeem said. "So you learn how to deal with distractions, setbacks. I mean I'm a three-time champion and I've been through a lot, so it's all about adaptation. I'm pretty good at that I think."

About Me

I am Douglas CooteyI?m Douglas Cootey, and I?ve been blogging here since 2005. Before that I blogged for years into a tiny text file called ?what?s_new.html? and hosted it on a site so old not even archive.org remembers it very well. I would update that blog via telnet using vi. I also wore corduroy pants with platform shoes at the time. It was very exciting.

I started out blogging about mental health in order to accomplish three goals.

  1. First, I wanted to overcome the stigma. I couldn?t talk about my ADHD or Depression without feeling shame. The method I used to overcome this was self-deprecating humor. It worked well. Considering how many times I screw up my life in a day, I had plenty of source material. Still do.
  2. Next, I wanted to reach out to others who shared my issues. After many years of trying to build a community here I discovered something: People with ADHD don?t remember to come back. Poor dears. I could, however, count on women married to men with ADHD to visit regularly. They would visit often, vent their spleens, and then after a few months move on. Even my short stint at HealthyPlace.com failed to create that utopian community I dreamed of. However, all is not a failure. My blog has reached thousands of people, many of whom send me emails thanking me for what I have written. The stigma is strong, so they stay in the dark, but their hearts are touched. I have always considered this the greatest success of my blog.
  3. The last goal was to train myself to be a writer. I first worked on posting regularly. Then I worked on posting within a word count limit to train myself to discard my work without fear, focusing only on the best concepts to put forward. Now, I am writing in my novel so much I have a hard time coming back here to write about mental health, and this is a very good thing.

My new blog is at http://www.douglascootey.com. I will likely touch upon mental health from time to time since I live with the fun specters of ADHD & Depression daily, but the focus will be on progress, not process. I want to move forward; it is time.

With ?Cyborg?s? 16-second win and no Gina Carano, does women?s 145-pound division stand a chance?

With ?Cyborg?s? 16-second win and no Gina Carano, does women?s 145-pound division stand a chance?

Dana White was already wondering about the viability of the Strikeforce women's 145-pound division. After watching Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos destroy a helpless Hiroko Yamanaka in 16 seconds Saturday night, he's got to be thinking more about promoting just one female division down at 135.

Add in that each month Gina Carano is away from the sport, cements the fact that she's never returning for a serious run, and the featherweights better watch their diet and prep to slim down.

That's not going to be an easy task for Cyborg. You are what you are, and she's a large woman. She already looks ridiculous shredded at 145. Can she really cut another 10 pounds in healthy fashion and recover in one day to be 100 percent rejuvenated on fight nights?

"I'm going to put in a valiant effort to try and make 135," Santos told MMAjunkie's John Morgan through an interpreter. "Maybe if I can make a catchweight and fight at 140 first and slowly make my way down to 135, but I'm going to put in a good effort to get down to 135."

If the 145 division remains, Strikeforce could match up Cyborg against Ronda Rousey. That'll certainly make for a good prefight promotion, but from a fight standpoint, it may be a mistmatch. What does it say about the 145-pound division if the best option for the champ is to facea woman who is just four fights into her pro career?

The signs are there that Carano isn't coming back. There will simply be too many opportunities and too much money in the entertainment world to allow her to return to getting punched in the face. Her film "Haywire" is due for release in 2012. You can see in this January GQ feature why she'll be so highly sought after as a female action movie star.

With ?Cyborg?s? 16-second win and no Gina Carano, does women?s 145-pound division stand a chance?

What do you guys want? A more loaded 135 division or to see Zuffa/Strikeforce to show some patience and allow the field to develop the next few years at 145?

ROUNDTABLE: Will UFC 141's Friday night timeslot have a major negative impact on its buyrate?

LesnarBrock_180_5.jpg
Do you think the Friday night timeslot for UFC 141 will have a major negative impact on the event's pay-per-view buyrate?

JASON AMADI, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

There is no way of knowing how this sort of change will play out, but I feel like moving the card up a night won't have too much of an impact. The UFC was able to shift their pay-per-view start time without any negative impact on UFC 129's pay-per-view numbers, but an entire day is much more complicated.

The UFC likes to do events at this time of year because people are off work, with their families and looking for something to do. Keeping with that line of thinking, the night before New Year's Eve could be the best possible night to do an event.

At the end of the day, this is a Brock Lesnar fight and probably his most exciting matchup since being in the UFC. The fact that the UFC gave this event away to 25,000 people for free on Xbox Live (myself included) will probably have more of an effect on the pay-per-view numbers than the temporary move to Friday night.

FRANK HYDEN, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR??

I don't think it'll have a major impact, largely because it's still Brock Lesnar and there's no huge competitor that night for attention. The event taking place on a Friday night will surely have an effect, but I still think they can do a large number of buys. This is Brock's return to the cage and that will surely generate interest.

ANWAR PEREZ, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

I don't think it will matter at all concerning the buyrate. I think if anything, it may improve it as it serves two purposes. It pushes Lesnar as a draw on a Friday night, and also, it avoids being slotted on New Year's Eve where the buyrate more than likely would be atrocious regardless of who fights on this card. I think it'll stay the same, but if it does change, it'll be a higher buyrate than most.

ERIC HOBAUGH, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

Not at all. If the fight card did not have such a strong main event, it would. The buyrate will be reasonably strong because Brock Lesnar is on the card.
?

JAMIE PENICK, MMATORCH EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

The issue will come with the very problem Dana White himself has had this week. Fans are conditioned for Saturday nights being UFC fight nights, and for the casual observers who know that Brock Lesnar is returning this weekend, it's highly likely many of them find out tomorrow morning that the fight has already taken place. There is going to be a definite dip in what the event could have brought in on a Saturday night, but it's still likely going to be the biggest buyrate the UFC has had in the last eight months, and because it's Lesnar could potentially be larger than April's UFC 129.

UFC 141 CONTESTS: Confidence Pick and Betting Games are LIVE

UFC_141_poster_180_2_1.jpg
By Rich Hansen, MMA Torch Columnist

Brock versus Alistair. Lesnar versus Overeem. Brock Lesnar versus Alistair Overeem. Diverticulitis versus horse meat. WWE versus K1. Jim Ross versus Michael Schiavello. Muscles upon muscles versus, well, more muscles upon more muscles.

Oh, and there are ten other fights as well. As always, we here at MMA Torch commemorate each major UFC event (along with the occasional major Strikeforce event ? and yes, I know that is an oxymoron) by running the MMA Torch Betting and Confidence Pick games. And with UFC 141 just around the corner, it?s time to bring in the new year Torch style; by betting play money and making picks against total strangers on the internet in the pursuit of no cash and prizes.

In the MMA Torch Confidence Picks game, Rich Hansen is your two time defending champion. And while there is a huge conflict of interest at play here, since I tabulate all the entries and run the game, again, no prizes, so nyah nyah. I will be defending against the Englishman Carll Light.

In the MMA Torch Betting Contest, our new champion, veteran player Avery ?Odin? Clarke will be defending his title for the first time against the plucky and effervescent Dionicio Ortiz (and yes, I did just pick two unrelated adjectives at random.).

NOTE

Please note that Sean Pierson and Ross Pearson have names that, while spelled differently, are pronounced the exact same way. So as to avoid confusion, please be very precise when you?re making any picks that involve either of these two fighters.

CONFIDENCE PICKS NOTE

UFC 141 is an 11 fight card. Therefore, the point values you assign must range from 11 (most confident) down to 1 (least confident).

When you email your entry, please sort the entry numerically from high to low. Thanks.

BETTING LINES

So, with no further ado, here are the lines we?re using, courtesy of Pinnacle:

Alistair Overeem: -140
Brock Lesnar: +127

Donald Cerrone: -277
Nate Diaz: +245

Jon Fitch: -217
Johny Hendricks: +194

Alexander Gustafsson: -330
Vladimir Matyushenko: +289

Nam Phan: -220
Jimy Hettes: +197

Ross Pearson: -295
Junior Assuncao: +260

Danny Castillo: -167
Anthony Njokuani: +151

Dong Hyun Kim: -370
Sean Pierson: +322

Jacob Volkmann: -250
Efrain Escudero: +222

Matt Riddle: -110
Luis Ramos: +100 (even)

Diego Nunes: -245
Manvel Gamburyan: +218

CONFIDENCE PICKS GAME RULES

NOTE: A player does not need to play both games during each event. Players may choose to submit an entry for one game or the other, or for both, at their own choosing.

Assign a number from 1 through 12 (if a 12 fight card, 1 through 11 if a 11 fight card, etc.), with the highest number going to the fighter you are most confident in winning. Also list your prediction for method of victory, along with the round (or decision if you predict a decision)

Using UFC 124 as a template, here is how simple an entry will look:

Georges St-Pierre ? 11 - decision
Thiago Alves - 10 - KO2
Jim Miller - 9 - decision
Stefan Struve - 8 - KO1
Ricardo Almeida - 7 - sub3
Mark Bocek - 6 - sub2
Joe Stevenson - 5 - decision
Dan Miller - 4 - decision
Rafael Natal - 3 - decsion
Matt Riddle - 2 - KO1
John Makdessi - 1 - decision

The first tie-breaker is the sum of confidence points. Using the example above, a Georges St-Pierre victory would earn 11 points, Thiago Alves winning would earn 10 points, etc.

If two participants earn the same number of confidence points, the next tie-breaker will be total number of winners predicted. If Player A earns 40 points on 7 winning picks, and if Player B earns 40 points on 6 winning picks, Player A would be declared the winner.

The next tie-breaker is the number of victory methods predicted correctly. Next would be predicted rounds of victory.

If both players are still tied at this point, both players will be declared winner, and they will face off again, along with the winner of the pool (to be described later), at the next event in a three way dance.

There is no money being wagered in this game, and there are no prizes, short of bragging rights.

BETTING GAME RULES

1.) Every player has $1000 of fake, imaginary, theoretical, play money to wager on each event. This is not a real money game, it is strictly for fun.

2.) Players must place a bet of at least $50, but not more than $500, on each of 3 or more different fighters. Bets may be in any denomination, as long as the amount falls in the range of $50 - $500.

3.) Players may also place a parlay bet. A parlay bet is a bet placed on multiple fighters. All fighters in the parlay must win their fights in order for the parlay to pay off. Parlay bets pay off at a higher rate than a bet on a single fighter. The parlay bet may be placed on either 2 or on 3 fighters.

4.) The minimum parlay bet is $50. The maximum parlay bet is $200. This money comes out of the $1000 allotted to each player. The parlay bet is not separate from the $1000 budget. A player is not required to play a parlay bet. The maximum number of parlay bets a player may wager is one.

5.) Whether or not a player chooses to place a parlay bet, the player must still place at least three straight bets ie: It is not legal to place two bets on individual fighters and one parlay bet. No entry is considered valid unless there are a minimum of 3 straight bets placed on individual fighters.

6.) If a fight ends in a draw, any money bet on said fighter will be refunded, with no fake money commission taken. If a fighter in a 3-fighter parlay is involved in a draw, that fighter will be removed from the parlay and the 3-fighter parlay will be treated as a 2-fighter parlay. If a fighter in a 2-fighter parlay is involved in a draw, that fighter will be removed from the parlay and the 2-fighter parlay will be treated as a straight bet on the remaining fighter.

Instructions on how to read and utilize the betting lines

7.) If a fighter has a positive number such as +150 next to his name, he is the underdog, which means a successful bet on that fighter will pay off at a higher rate. That means that if the fighter wins, the bet will payout $150 net profit for every $100 bet on him. If a player were to bet $500 on a +150 fighter, and the fighter wins, the player will profit $750. If a player bets $500 on a +150 fighter, and the fighter loses, the player will lose his $500 bet.

8.) If a fighter has a negative number such as -200 next to his name, he is the favorite, which means a successful bet on that fighter will pay off at a lower rate. That means that if the fighter wins, the bet will payout $100 net profit for every $200 bet on him. If a player were to bet $500 on a -200 fighter, and the fighter wins, the player will profit $250. If a player bets $500 on a -200 fighter, and the fighter loses, the player will lose his $500 bet.

Structure for each game

9.) For each UFC numbered event, both the Confidence Picks and Betting Game will feature a champion and a challenger facing off against one another. The winner of the head to head battle will be declared the reigning champion.

10.) All other players for each UFC numbered event will compete against each other for the right to face off against the reigning champion at the next UFC numbered event. This is known as The Pool.

11.) As games administrator, I have the subjective right to eliminate any entry for any reason I deem worthy.

12.) Entries may be submitted via email (mmatorchrich@gmail.com), or on the comment section of this post. Email is the preferred method, because if a player posts an invalid entry, I have no way to make sure I can get hold of the player so that it may be corrected. Please, under no circumstances should you both email and post on the board your entry. One or the other please, preferably email.

13.) Any questions, please email me and ask, or find me on Twitter and ask. There are no new rules in this list of rules. I just wanted to have everything listed together. But that said, if you have a question, just ask.

Most important rule

14.) If you mention being a Packer fan, you will be banned. Try me.

Hockey Fight of the Day: Wayne Simmonds vs. Eric Brewer

Plenty of hockey fights end in a draw or without a definitive winner. Today’s entry is NOT one of those, as the Philadelphia Flyers’ Wayne Simmonds not only drops the Tampa Bay Lightning’s Eric Brewer with a sweet hook-uppercut combo but even opens up a pretty decent gash on his face as a result. Brock Lesnar charged with hunting violations in Canada

Brock Lesnar charged with hunting violations in Canada

Brock Lesnar is a huge fan of hunting, but his favorite pastime got him in a spot of trouble in Canada. Lesnar faces charges in Medicine Hat, Alberta for doing the kind of things that tick off hunting officials. From our friends at CJCY in Alberta:

The charges came before Medicine Hat Provincial Court Thursday morning and include improper affixation of tags, spoilage of skin and edible flesh and possession of a controlled animal.

My lack of hunting knowledge makes this sound pretty bad, because spoilage of skin and edible flesh sound like plot devices from "Silence of the Lambs." However, the good people of Canada must not be too angry with Lesnar, because his court date was continued until January, after his fight with Alistair Overeem.

Chael Sonnen unimaginatively takes shot at Chicago Cubs

When touting UFC on Fox 2, Chael Sonnen took a shot at the Chicago Cubs, a team who plays 5.5 miles away from the United Center, where Sonnen will fight Mark Munoz. (He takes the shot at the very beginning of the video.)

What disappoints me about that is it's lack of imagination. Using the Cubs as a punching bag is for amateurs, and Sonnen is a highly regarded professional in the world of trash talk. Dana White called him the Muhammad Ali of MMA for his ability to sell a fight. Ali would never go for such an obvious joke.

C'mon, Chael. Do your research. Learn my city, and make better jokes than that.

Thanks to Chicago's MMA.

Following Twitter-related release, Miguel Torres rejoins UFC roster

LAS VEGAS - Miguel Torres' UFC release proved a rather short one.

Following a press conference ahead of Friday's UFC 141 event, UFC president Dana White was joined by the former WEC champion.

White confirmed that despite the fighter's release from the promotion earlier this month due to a controversial Twitter message he posted, Torres has rejoined the organization. Torres' reps confirmed the move when contacted by MMAjunkie.com.

Alistair Overeem is in for UFC 141, but still fighting battle against rumor mill

Alistair Overeem is in for UFC 141, but still fighting battle against rumor mill

The last thing Alistair Overeem needed was any sort of performance enhancing drug testing snafu heading into the biggest fight of his career in the U.S. But that's exactly what happened to the behemoth from Holland.

Overeem, his camp and the Nevada State Athletic Commission had some communications issues. When the NSAC asked for a random drug test sample in mid-November, there was a five-day lapse, the incorrect sample was sent in and it was done by Overeem's personal physician administered the original test. It's all been worked out, Overeem satisfied the state's requirement and his fight against Brock Lesnar at UFC 141 is on, but it just adds another odd chapter for folks who are suspicious over the fighter's enormous growth since 2007.

"You can't get bothered too much by all the stuff that's written," Overeem told the Boston Herald. "To be honest, I don't really have time to read it all because training takes a lot of energy. All the activities that come with being a fighter and fighting at this level take a lot of my energy, so I don't have enough time to read it all."

At 6-foot-5, Overeem always had the frame to add more weight, but his gain from a 205-pounder to around 256 has been amazing in just four years.

"Some of it's not nice and people accuse you of stuff and hate a little bit. But if you're going to be in this position, there will always be people who love you and there will always be people who hate you," Overeem said.

"The Reem" is 10-1 since his move to heavyweight. There's a case to be made that he's become a better fighter now that he's not stripping himself down to make 205. In any case, the extra weight allows him to square off against those perceived by casual fans as the biggest and baddest in the sport.

"I think the fight between Brock and me is a dream fight," Overeem said. "I never thought about the possibility of me fighting him in the UFC. I was fighting outside of the UFC and I didn't see the fight coming, maybe ever. The way things went, I'm very happy I got the opportunity."

Of course, the argument could also be made that a 225-pound Overeem might stand a better shot against the gargantuan Lesnar. Speed, movement and technique, not pure power has been the path to beating the former WWE star during his short MMA career.

Lesnar interview: Former champ says no one can avoid his takedowns

The clash of the titans is just over a week away. When Brock Lesnar and Alistair Overeem lock horns at UFC 141 you'll be seeing 521 pounds of beef in the Octagon.

Overeem is huge, but Lesnar still questions whether anyone can avoid his takedown game.

"Honestly I feel comfortable on my feet and I don't feel threatened in any area by this guy at all," Lesnar told ESPN1100/98.9 FM in Las Vegas. "There hasn't been anybody in the UFC that I haven't been able to take down. The issue is we just have to be able to keep them there."

On Overeem's troubles with the Nevada State Athletic Commission and his tardy prefight drug test, Lesnar said he barely kept up with the story. He was ready to face Overeem, Frank Mir or anyone else the UFC put in front of him. He was determined to fight on Dec. 30 come hell or high water.

?Warrior? DVD release on Tuesday: Greg Jackson helped make it super realistic

?Warrior? DVD release on Tuesday: Greg Jackson helped make it super realisticHe's nicknamed "The Maestro" and "The Professor" for a reason.

Greg Jackson knows his mixed martial arts in and out of the cage. That's why the producers of the movie "Warrior" leaned on the MMA trainer so heavily.

You can check out "Warrior" when it's released this Tuesday Dec. 20 for digital download, On Demand and on DVD/Blue-ray.

Cagewriter has several copies of the DVD to give away. Check out the Cagewriter Facebook page for details. Happy Holidays!

The movie sounds great and it certainly has the stamp of approval from Jackson.

The Albuquerque-based owner of Jackson's MMA was an integral part of making the movie feel realistic. Jackson schooled the actors on the key moves and actions of the fight game, but he was on point in making sure everyone in the film knew how important it was to get across the positive messages of MMA.

"The biggest thing for me was how MMA and combat and martial arts in general can be a tool for good," Jackson told ESPN1100/98.9 FM. "[The producer] wanted to come at it from a more artistic point of view, a more realistic point of view."

Jackson thought "Warrior" was a true reflection of the game.

[...] It's as accurate as any movie can get about MMA. It shows again how martial arts can be a healing thing not just a tool of violence. So there's all these great messages in it that really resonated with me. I was excited to be a part of it," said Jackson.

ProMMANow did a nice review of the film that features brothers, who meet in the finale of a $5 million MMA tournament.

The attention to detail for the MMA fight scenes and the training the actors had to undergo to make them look like authentic fighters on screen will be appreciated by MMA fans.

The most difficult thing audiences will have to deal with is their sympathy and alliance between the brothers. They'll find themselves rooting for both guys, but for very different reasons.

Professional fighters Stephan Bonnar, Yves Edwards, Rashad Evans and Nate Marquardt all make appearances in the film. There's even a bow-tied Josh Rosenthal playing the referee role.

Gilbert Melendez holds onto Strikeforce belt with decision win

Gilbert Melendez holds onto Strikeforce belt with decision win

Gilbert Melendez defended the Strikeforce men's lightweight belt with a methodical decision over Jorge Masvidal in the main event for Strikeforce on Saturday night. On the judges' cards, the champ took it 50-45, 50-45, 49-46.

As the two were feeling each other out in the opening round, Masvidal opened his arms and invited Melendez to hit him, so Melendez obliged and stung Masvidal with straight punches. Masvidal stayed light on his feet, and kicked Melendez's leg out from underneath him. Melendez quickly returned to his feet. Near the end of the round, Melendez caught Masvidal in a front headlock and landed knees to finish the round well.

Masvidal continued to talk smack to Melendez in the second round, and Melendez continued to have an edge in striking. Melendez stayed light on his feet and shook Masvidal with several strikes. Masvidal was unable to find a rhythm or cause any damage.

The third round started with Masvidal thwarting a Melendez takedown attempt. Masvidal threw a knee and knocked out Melendez's mouthpiece and continued to talk smack. Every time Masvidal opened his mouth, Melendez landed a punch. Masvidal appeared to be more comfortable in the third round and was able to create more offense, but still not enough to disrupt Melendez.

Melendez moved forward and landed several unanswered punches in the fourth round. He continued to stay light on his feet and move in to land jabs. In the final minute, Melendez started using a one-two combination effectively.

Masvidal used a knee to try to get inside early in the fifth and final round, but again was unable to create any damage. Melendez stayed calm, kept moving, and used combinations to control the rhythm of the last round. Sensing urgency, Masvidal unloaded in the final minute. He tried for a takedown and to take Melendez's back, but it was too little to make a difference.

After the win, Melendez was asked about his future, and he said he wants a challenge from the UFC.

"I'm proud to be a part of Strikeforce, but they've got to bring over some guys to challenge me. I want to take the UFC champ, whoever it is. Come in my hexagon and let's fight," Melendez said.

He won his last six fights, earning a record of 20-2. Masvidal is now 22-7.
