Separating What?s Bipolar From What?s Not

One of the things I hate most about bipolar disorder is how subtly sinister it can be when a loved one is trending toward mania ? not manic yet or even hypomanic, just talking faster and louder, blurting out statements that are a little too open and honest and perhaps hurtful, and being more self-centered [...]

Writing with Focus When Depression Clouds the View

Checkity check!

Life has been tough lately. (I know, somebody call the Waaahmbulance.)

So if I told you that I haven't been writing, you might not be surprised. I'm currently unemployed, dealing with crushing Depression, and still recovering from being divorced. (Yeah, it's been seven months. No, I'm not over it yet. Let's see you get over the end of a 23 year marriage quickly. No, please, show me. I'd really like to know how.) But the fact is that I have been writing. My problem has been that I'm writing too many things.

You know me. I'm Mr. Too Many Irons in the Fire. It's my Wampanoag Indian surname. I'm sure my ancient Sachem ancestor would be proud of me. (Actually, I would love to know what that name was in Wampanoag. Too bad the colonials stamped out Wampanoag culture after King Phillip's War.)

Anyway, where were we? Mr. Too Many Irons in the Fire. I have one finished middle grade novel, another on the back burner, three or four finished picture book manuscripts, several short story ideas, a cool kid detective story that has been burning in my mind, and the desire to write an ADHD eBook based in part on my escapades as an ADHD expert. (Oh, have I been holding out on you. I've got a story so horrifyingly typical of ADHD that it is being saved for the book.) I've got a few hundred ideas and no time to write them. When you flit from project to project like a butterfly hopped up on nectar, you don't get anything finished.

So I spent last Monday making THE DECISION. I can't do it all, and I work best one idea at a time, so which idea was it going to be? Was I going to rewrite my middle grade novel about the singing cat? Was I going to write that dark fantasy short story? Was I going to start the kid detective project which would require one new story being released per month with illustrations? (I never said the ideas were realistic?) Or was I going to write that ADHD eBook?

After an agonizing few hours of sorting pros from cons, I decided to write the ADHD eBook. It seemed the easiest project to do because its writing style would be an extension of what I was already doing here. Also, I needed to focus in on getting a paying gig somewhere and that eBook seemed the project least likely to distract me.

Do you know what happened? Once I made that decision, I created a todo list and started checking things off that very night. I've been steadily working on the eBook all week. I cannot believe how much progress I have made. Today I created the eBook's outline by chapter, and next week I start researching this blog for stories. (Follow along on Twitter and you might be able to help out.) The eBook is happening.

Now that I have focus, I am very surprised how little focus I had before. I see that Depression clouded my mind, keeping me down and unproductive. Again, I find the impact of the divorce far more reaching and disruptive than I anticipated. So many coping strategies forgotten by the wayside? I am glad that I have spent the past twenty years learning how to regulate my mind. I pulled from those experiences as soon as I was able. Maybe in a shorter time than I think I will find myself "over it" and well adapted to single life.

Just in case I have a relapse or two, I have "hired" on a friend to help. I created an online todo project over at Producteev and made him a teammate. He checks the list daily and looks to see that I've been busy. I don't want him to hold my hand, so he has been instructed to prod me only if he doesn't see any activity after three days. That gives me plenty of opportunity to overcome my Depression or ADHD fog all on my own. I'm hoping the system works.

If you are struggling to accomplish your goals, maybe you have too many of them. Pick one goal to work on, and get a friend or family member to help you stay on track. It's bound to help you feel better about yourself, and you may even finish the goal faster than you imagined. But start by picking that ONE project to work on. Good luck!

Don?t expect to see Alistair Overeem fight on the UFC?s New Year?s Eve card

Suspended UFC heavyweight Alistair Overeem tweeted on Monday he'll be back to fight in December.

I'll be fighting again in December and mark my words, I'll be back.. to get the belt, sooner rather later.

Per the terms of his suspension for having elevated testosterone levels, he could technically be available by the card the UFC traditionally holds near New Year's Eve. However, the UFC isn't known to book a fight with a still-suspended fighter with hopes that he would get a license for their fight.

Will they change things up to get Overeem on the big end-of-the-year card? Don't bet on it. UFC chairman Lorenzo Fertitta said he won't book Overeem until he has a license.

"That's speculation," Fertitta said in a text to ESPN.com. "It's in the NSAC's hands. (The UFC) can't be presumptuous."

Overeem isn't eligible to apply for a license until Dec. 27, and the card is expected to be on Dec. 29. They would have to take a huge risk to put him on such an important event when he wasn't able to get a license before. He burned them for UFC 146 and made the UFC scramble to completely reconfigure the card. It makes sense they don't want to go through it again.

The non-PPV portion of UFC 148 finished with two more decisions, meaning there were no stoppages on the preliminary card of Saturay night's bouts in Las Vegas.

Melvin Guillard looked close to finishing Fabricio Camoes in the first round of their bout, but the horn sounded before their fight was stopped. Guillard held on to win the decision 30-27 on all three cards. Khabib Nurmagomedov took a tight decision from Gleison Tibau, 30-27, 30-27, 30-27.

Why You Just Can't Stop Texting and Driving

For some neurological reason, there is something really attractive to many of us about sending a message while we're driving. Is it because the pressure is so high to be productive that we can't wait? Is it because we're unaware of the dangers? Is it because we've lost our ability to just wait a few moments later to communicate? Certainly there was a time before even cell phones and computers where people just drove and communicated when they were able, so we know it's possible.
A greater question is, why are we so willing to increase the...

Alex Caceres says patience key in UFC on FUEL TV 4 win, future endeavors

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Alex Caceres didn't get exactly what he expected in his UFC on FUEL TV 4 fight with Damacio Page, but in true Bruce Lee fashion, he quickly adapted to the situation and earned victory in impressive fashion.

"Bruce Leroy" planned on a standup war with Page, but he quickly found himself in a grappling battle as his opponent favored the takedown over trading bombs on the feet.

And while there were a few stressful moments on the floor, Caceres said his new-found focus on patience pushed him through to victory.

Roy Nelson challenges Mike Russow to a win or leave (the heavyweight division) bout

In a heavyweight division of the UFC filled with fighters who are built like a Greek god, Roy Nelson and Mike Russow don't exactly fit the mold. After watching Fabricio Werdum knock out Russow at UFC 147, Nelson was struck with matchmaking inspiration.

"I want Mike Russow and loser goes to 205 or becomes Dana White Rich. Let make it happen @danawhite," Nelson tweeted.

Both men appear to carry more body fat than most of their counterparts and look like they could cut down a weight class. They also both have recent losses to Werdum, as Nelson dropped a decision to him in February.

This isn't the first time Nelson has contemplated a drop down. In March, he said he would try to get to light heavyweight if he added 100,000 Facebook likes. However, he abandoned the plan when he was booked for the all-heavyweight main card at UFC 146.

A drop for Russow, who weighed in at 246 pounds for UFC 147, may be a bit more difficult than for Nelson. In addition to being a pro fighter, he is a full-time officer in the Chicago Police Department. He doesn't train full time, like Nelson does.

Of course, the difficulty in dropping down would also give Russow more motivation to win the fight. Do you want to see this fight? Speak your mind in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

MMA Top 10 Middleweights: Intrigue Grows at 185 Pounds

by Michael David SmithAnderson Silva defended his title against Vitor Belfort at UFC 126.We haven't updated our rankings of the Top 10 middleweights in mixed martial arts in quite some time because, frankly, Anderson Silva has made it a boring division.

That's not to say Silva is boring: When he's on his game, he's as exciting as any athlete this sport has ever seen. And it's not to say the other fighters in the division are boring: There have been plenty of good middleweight scraps over the last few months.

But ranking the middleweight division can get boring because not much changes: It's always Silva on top, and a familiar cast of characters competing for the right to be Silva's next victim.

But there are some indications that the middleweight division in mixed martial arts might be getting a little more interesting. Yushin Okami is finally scheduled to get the title shot that was promised to him months ago, Chael Sonnen is finally getting close to being cleared for a return, and the addition of Strikeforce middleweights (starting in July with Jason Mayhem Miller and likely including Strikeforce champ Jacare Souza soon) may inject some new blood into the middleweight class.

So now is a good time to update our list of the Top 10 middleweights in mixed martial arts, keeping an eye on what's ahead for Silva and the other top fighters.

Aaron Simpson will honor Pat Tillman at UFC on Fuel 4

Aaron Simpson went to Arizona State with NFL player and Army Ranger Pat Tillman. Simpson became friends with Pat's brother Kevin, and Pat and Kevin would come to wrestling meets to support Simpson and the other Sun Devil wrestlers.

"I can remember exactly where I was when I found out Pat was killed, and how I handled it, which wasn't good," Simpson told Cagewriter. To honor Tillman and his legacy, Simpson will wear the number 42 on his fight shorts for his bout with Kenny Robertson at UFC on Fuel 4.

"I want people who don't know him to at least give notice to who he was. Look him up. Honor his family, his wife, and bring more viewership to his foundation, the Pat Tillman Foundation."

Tillman surprised the sporting world when left a promising and lucrative NFL career with the Arizona Cardinals to become an Army Ranger after the September 11th attacks. He was killed in a friendly fire incident in Afghanistan on April 22, 2004.

He went to high school in the San Jose area, where Simpson's fight will take place. It seemed like the perfect time for Simpson to honor Tillman. Kevin agreed.

"I texted Kevin, and he said, 'Pat would really appreciate it. Pat would have loved this,'" Simpson said.

"He didn't want to be known for what he did in serving the military. He was the kind of guy that wasn't about himself or bringing recognition to himself or what he did. He was a team player. I don't want to make too big. In a way, it's a kind of personal thing. I just want to remember him."

Five Things to Know about the Affordable Care Act

Manny Pacquiao Dominates Shane Mosley

by Michael David SmithManny Pacquiao defeated Shane Mosley via a unanimous decision in Las Vegas.Manny Pacquiao showed once again why he's the biggest attraction in boxing, dominating Shane Mosley on Saturday night to win a one-sided unanimous decision in the biggest fight of the year.

Although Mosley came out fighting hard with a good first round, it was all Pacquiao from there on. Pacquiao knocked Mosley down in the third and dominated the fight throughout. Technically Mosley knocked Pacquiao down in the 10th round, but in reality Pacquiao fell when Mosley tripped him, and the referee made a mistake in calling it a knockdown. In reality, Mosley never had Pacquiao in any trouble, at any point in the fight.

All three judges awarded it to Pacquiao by lopsided scores: 119-108, 120-108 and 120-107. According to the pay-per-view broadcast, Pacquiao landed exactly 100 more punches than Mosley did (182 to 82) and threw more than twice as many punches (552 to 260).

Jon Jones vs. Anderson Silva? Four reasons the fight between champs shouldn?t happen

Before UFC president Dana White even strapped the middleweight championship belt around Anderson Silva's waist, my Twitter timeline was filled with questions on when Silva would face light heavyweight champ Jon Jones.

White said, "Let's see what happens," in response to a question about the two champs fighting. With Silva walking around at around 215 lbs., size is not a problem. But it's still not a fight that should happen for these reasons.

1. It's a no-win situation for Jon Jones. If he wins, he was expected to win and defend his weight class. If he loses, does anyone give him a pass?

2. Silva doesn't need it to prove he's the greatest. He has moved up to light heavyweight twice before. Both times, he won in the first round. As detailed here, Silva has dominated since joining the UFC in 2006.

[Kevin Iole: Anderson Silva makes Chael Sonnen pay for his mistake]

3. It ties up both the middleweight and light heavyweight belts. Between injuries and time to prepare for fights and placing championship fights on the perfect cards, championship bouts don't happen enough. This fight would tie up two different belts as Silva and Jones prepared for their fight. Do you remember how long we had to wait around for Sonnen/Silva and Jones' bout with Rashad Evans?

4. Neither of them want the fight. When champs want to move across weight classes, they should at least want the fight to happen. Jones, who is preparing for his Sept. 1 fight against Dan Henderson, tweeted his lack of interest in a bout with Silva.

"Man my man ?#AndersonSilva? went to work tonight, consistently amazing," Jones said. "I guess Anderson said he had no interest in fighting me at tonight's press conference, I feel the same way about him. Nothing but respect."

It has nothing to do with either man not wanting the challenge or "being afraid," as I'm sure will get mentioned in the comment section. It has to do with their focus on their own weight classes, and participating in fights that make sense for them.

Gus Johnson: Any MMA Fighter Would Kill Pacquiao In the Cage

by Michael David SmithGus Johnson, the broadcaster who called the blow-by-blow on Manny Pacquiao's victory over Shane Mosley and who also calls Strikeforce fights on Showtime, has weighed in on the frequently discussed subject of how a boxer would do in MMA. And he doesn't like any boxer's chances.

In a radio interview with Dan Patrick, Johnson was asked how Pacquiao would do in an MMA fight against an MMA fighter, and Johnson said it's ridiculous to even think Pacquiao could last.

"He'd get killed," Johnson said of Pacquiao in the cage. "No question. Tapped out, easily. In a minute."

UFC 148: Defeated Chael Sonnen admires Anderson Silva, Brazilian fans following loss

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

SonnenChael_GG180_27.jpg
In August of 2010, Chael Sonnen nearly did the unthinkable: defeat Anderson Silva in the UFC. It was an incredible and unexpected performance, but ultimately a futile endeavor as he was forced to tap out to a triangle choke midway through the fifth round.

The way that fight played out led to two more years of intense trash talk from Sonnen, which then culminated in Silva getting involved in the verbal proceedings as well heading into UFC 148. However, it was Silva who had the final word, allowing Sonnen one round to open the fight before picking him apart easily and stopping him in the second round. After the fight, a humbled Chael Sonnen could only commend the Champion for getting the job done again.

"It's pass or fail when you're in [the Octagon]," Sonnen said at the post-fight press conference (transcribed by Sherdog.com. "You either get it done, or you don't. I was handed a lot of compliments after the first fight, and I'm going, 'Jeez, that's nice, but did you see who won the fight? I didn't win.' [Silva is] just a another regular guy. We weigh the same thing, and he finds a way to win. I admire it."

The two seemed to leave the feud behind them in the cage after the fight, with Silva extended a hand shake to Sonnen and inviting him to his Brazil home for a barbecue. It was a move that did not go unappreciated.

"That's the way you deal with combat," Sonnen said of the handshake. "You always leave it in the cage or on the mat. Those are the rules, and I follow them. That was great that he [shook my hand]. It was very nice of him."

Sonnen also had kind words for the Brazilian fans in attendance in Las Vegas. The vocal crowd rained down boos on him and were in Silva's corner throughout the night after all the things Sonnen had said of them in the last two years, and it was something Sonnen both expected and appreciated at the end of the night.

"The Brazilian fans have it down right. They back their guy," Sonnen said. "America is the only country in the world where we don't do that, and that's fine, but I really admire the Brazilian fans. That includes when I'm getting booed on the way in. I should be getting booed when I'm taking on their guy."

From here, Sonnen's future isn't clear. The force driving him has been becoming the UFC Middleweight Champion, and his failure to do so a second time may mean it's unlikely he gets to a third opportunity. However, if there's any hope of fighting once more for the belt, he's sure to get back in line to make a run for it.

"I really believe that if you're going to be in this company and take up a spot, then you've got to be chasing a championship," Sonnen said. "There are plenty of young guys who could come in and get their opportunity. I got my chance, and then I got it again. I'm not going to ask for anything. I'm grateful for it, but I will not hang around for one day to blend in. It's either to be the world champ or I'll move on and do something else."

Penick's Analysis: Dana White has been saying this week that UFC 148 was trending as the best event they've ever done on pay-per-view, from a buyrate standpoint. Because of that, it's certainly not out of the realm of possibility that Sonnen could work his way to a third fight with Silva. Especially because there isn't much in the way of options for the UFC at middleweight right now. Mark Munoz, Chris Weidman, Hector Lombard, Tim Boetsch, Michael Bisping, Alan Belcher, and Brian Stann are all either fighting or trying to get fights set up in the division to move them into place, but even then few of them make for highly intriguing opponents, and half the field will suffer losses in the next several months. Sonnen could win two or three fights and be right back in position to potentially get the fight again, though the circumstances would be much different in that event. The trash talking would be significantly subdued compared to what we got into this fight, and Silva would have two wins to hold over Sonnen should anything be said. But there could still potentially be money in a third fight, so don't put it past the UFC to eye it down the line.

Fabricio Werdum snaps Mike Russow?s win streak at UFC 147

Fabricio Werdum made his case to join the crowded top of the UFC's heavyweight division with a knockout of Mike Russow at UFC 147 in Brazil on Saturday night.

Werdum bloodied Russow's face early in the clinch. He leveled Russow with an uppercut, then followed with several punches and hammerfists until the fight was stopped at 2:28 in the first round.

As the crowd chanted his nickname, "Vai Cavalo," Werdum jumped on top of the cage to celebrate and nearly fell off. Once he recovered, Werdum asked for a title shot against Junior dos Santos.

"I respect 'Cigano,' but I'm ready for him," Werdum said after the bout.

Werdum was knocked out by dos Santos when they fought in 2008. Since then, Werdum moved to Strikeforce, where he beat Fedor Emelianenko, but lost to Alistair Overeem. He now has two wins back in the UFC.

This is Russow's first loss since he was submitted by Sergei Kharitonov in 2007.

Footbags, Hacky Sacks, and ADHD Quitters

I decided to learn to play with the footbag this summer. I never learned hacky sack (as we called it) as a kid, nor did I play soccer, so my foot to eye coordination needs a lot of work. However, in November of 2010 I injured my pelvis, so I'm not very limber. On top of that, I spent the past twenty years with a chronic motor tic disorder. It's abated finally, which has allowed me to be more physical, but my coordination was damaged by it. In short, I'm terrible at footbagging!! However, I am determined. Getting fit is one of my goals for Life2.0. I'm biking and running, and maybe footbagging can play a part.

I loaded up Youtube, found a great footbag tutorial, and started working on the front kick. Today I kicked and caught the footbag five times in a row in each hand. Such a feeble goal and it took two days of practice!! Laughably pathetic, but I'm thrilled still the same. As soon as I have the basics down, I'll start practicing in the sun. I need more excuses to get out instead of huddling over a keyboard inside.

I've noticed that due to ADHD and its low tolerance for frustration, there are many things in life I attempted and gave up on. Footbagging was one of them. My brother, Phil, was pretty good at it, but I was lousy each time I tried, so I quit. I never played in a circle once, always afraid of stinking at it in front of the other guys. I made so many mistakes publicly because of ADHD. It seemed prudent to me to not set myself up for more embarrassment.

Now I know that everything requires a little bit of work at first, then we can expect results. Makes me wonder how much else I gave up on, and how much more I'm capable of. ADHD has been the cause of so much anxiety for me over the years. I never saw myself as a quitter, but what else can you call it when a low tolerance for frustration causes you to drop things and move on all the time? Sure, ADHD's intolerance for boredom can account for a lot of that. Repeating something over and over again to get better at it can be boring, but impatience with failure is different. I have a lot of that.

So I'll practice the footbag and force myself to do it publicly. I'll use ADHD's strengths and hyperfocus on the task for a few weeks. I don't anticipate joining a league of quadragenarian footbaggers, but maybe I might join life a little bit more than I have. Meet some people. Say "Hi." I might surprise myself and even have fun making mistakes. ADHD doesn't have to be a shadow over my life. I'd prefer getting out in the sun.

How often did you quit things because of frustration? Leave a comment below.

Work on my ADHD book on iPhones is coming along. I've decided not to review Wunderlist at this time, tho. Instead, I'll focus on finishing my eBook, then post reviews of all the apps I covered in the eBook when I finish it by the end of this month. That's my goal. I'll still continue to blog here. Any support you give will be appreciated. I hope I continue to provide interesting blogs for you. Thanks for reading.

Cultivating Resilience before Mental Health Problems Begin

Musing Monday: Too Hot To Think

Driving with the windows down and breeze in your hair sounds like a perfect, summery thing to do unless the inside of your minivan is a toasty 101F. Then the open window is as vital as breath. My minivan was so hot today that I felt as if I was riding a fireball along I-15 with a trail of vapor and smoke behind me.

So why didn't I put on the air conditioner?

I'm still in between jobs and trying to stretch the miles I get per gallon. The furnace on wheels was a necessary evil, though it fried my brain.

Today's errand was whisking my Leprechaun across the valley to have her braces tightened. I found a couch by a window down the hall and around the corner. It's normally a busy corner to camp out in because it is right by the elevator, but most people had the good sense to stay indoors today, so the hallway was silent and untravelled.

I used my TrueHDR app to take a picture of the indoors and the outdoors and sent a tweet out into the world, then got busy thinking about the next phase of my ADHD book. Braces tightened, the future set, we climbed back into minivan. The trip back in the furnace did me in, however. I was a pile of molten goo by the time I made it back to my apartment. It's taken me several hours to recover. I'm going to need to load up on Slurpees next time I take that fireball for another ride.

Now it is time to write and write and write. To jumpstart my noodle I am going to base today's creative writing exercise on the photo I took. Who's looking out the window and what are they thinking? Yes, yes. Let's pretend it's not me:

Amanda liked to taunt me. She delighted in it really. She had moved the fake tree in the day after I was confined to this room, laughing the whole time. Now every time I looked out to see the trees, I had to look past Amanda's gift. It hung over me while I was trapped here in bed, everything bound and wrapped. Even my mouth was in traction.

Mother had tried to soothe me. "Jennika, darling. Amanda is just trying to help you feel comfortable. You mustn't fuss so." Of course Mother would think that. Amanda could do no wrong. I didn't have the energy to argue with her. I didn't have the jaw movement, either.

Mother simply didn't understand that the tree was not meant to make me feel comfortable. It was the very tree I had hid behind when watching Amanda kiss my boyfriend. At least when Kincade noticed me he had the decency to look embarrassed, but Amanda just laughed. It tinkled in that musical way I used to envy, but today it felt like shards of broken glass in my heart. Then I ran. I pushed over the tree, then I pushed past people, doors, and bicyclists. I'd have pushed past the car if it hadn't been so much heavier than me.

Leave your writing exercise below.
